Grabbing Los Angeles to El Paso (6 blacks) just one turn before you could was the defining moment. Had you beaten Yellow to that route you would have earned extra turns in the game. That's just bad luck really.
Partly bad luck, but I also think Matt took reds instead of blacks at points, when New Orleans - Miami was not being contested. I think he could've secured L.A to El Paso earlier.
you're only going to get three turns at the end so with no orange or pink on board i think your options are take the blue and hope you can get another blue or a wild from the top of the deck or your next turn, or take from the top and hope to get orange and pink, blue, or wild. this strategy completes your routes (top decking gets you a wild and the blue, taking the blue puts a wild on the board that stays) and ends you with a score of 135 for second place. taking the pair of white is bad strategy, it takes too long for you to get your route complete. you alternatively could just draw routes instead of taking the pair as losing 5 points is meh, but i think you're competitive enough for the bonus that it's worth trying to complete the 5 point route.
