    You know, I think my favorite thing about Missouri Star quilt videos is the way they respect different methods and remind us that there is no "right" way. When I first started quilting in the 80s it was full of rules you had to follow. I love the way you remind us that it is OK if you are not perfect. Thank you for that. As a perfectionist, your frequent reminders that it doesn't have to be perfect takes any stress out of quilting and reminds me that it is pure joy. You guys are awesome!

    Okay, Natalie is a new found gem for me! She has her moms genes! She is calm, relaxed, and real about the journey--it’s not about perfection it’s about accomplishing goals, taking baby steps, getting better in time, and mostly enjoying the process! I teach sewing and quilting in my private studio and I’m always looking for new and different ways to achieve great results! I love this painters tape technique! I tell my students not to worry about small stitch irregularities -concern yourself with the overall beauty with your creation! Hugs to Natalie for clear, honest, and great teaching instruction and advice! I’ll be following her!❤️✂️🧵

    Thank you so much for doing these Natalie! I love all of the elaborate quilting designs but I appreciate that you took the time to show us the basics of home machine quilting. I feel like it gets overlooked because it’s not the “cool kid” long-arm quilters are. 😄 My budget doesn’t allow for sending my quilt off or buying special tools and it’s great that you speak to that!

    For stitch-in-the-ditch, just like for garment sewing, it's better to have thread a bit darker than a bit lighter. Sometimes having the ditch stitching a few shades darker actually helps give a "shadow" effect in the ditch.

    I made a quilt for my moms bday that was safari animal print 10" hexis. I didn't have time to send it to a quilter so using my featherweight, I ended up making a zebra stripe stitch in each hexi. I was so happy with how it turned out because I didn't need to have dropped feed dogs, lots of experience and the lines didn't have to be perfectly straight. I live that Natalie is giving us so many n options. Quilts that go to a long armed are beautiful but there is also a lot if satisfaction when we can say we did everything on the quilt ourselves. I did free-motion quilting of all kinds for more than 30 years on several different home machines, usually the cheapest machine I could get on sale from Sears. Drop or cover feed, and set the stitch length to 0, and adjust the foot pressure to just barely skim the top of the quilt. Most of the time I didn't even have a darning or quilting foot. For straight-line quilting, use a walking foot, and just like driving, focus ahead of the needle. Keep it slow and steady; if that is a problem just try hand-quilting for a while, that makes any kind of machine quilting seem quite speedy.

      @jjudy5869 Před 3 lety +1

      Regular sewing thread for most quilts. If I want my quilting to be invisible I use invisible thread (mono filament) in the top and regular sewing thread in the bobbin.

    • @Pollyanna012
      @Pollyanna012 Před 3 lety +1

      It’s best for your project if you match your thread to your fabric, so if you’re piecing or quilting cotton fabrics, use cotton thread. There’s a good reason for this, poly thread is stronger than cotton fabric, so as the predictable stress (wear and tear) on the finished project in use, the fabric will begin to rip around the seams. It’s easier to occasionally mend a seam if the thread gives way than trying to darn the fabric at the seam ! Choose a good quality cotton thread (my personal favourite is Aurifil, it’s so smooth and easy to thread the needle, behaves itself, and there’s masses on each reel so it’s a lot more economical to use than it first appears). Choose a 50cwt cotton thread for piecing quilting weight cottons and a 40cwt cotton thread for machine quilting cotton fabrics. When choosing a quilting cotton thread for machine quilting avoid the wax-coated threads meant for hand-quilting. Hope that helps !

    I love watching MSQC videos. Great job, Natalie! Everyone is always so pleasant. Sometimes it is hard to hear Liz so if there is a way to improve on that it would be nice. Also, just thought I might mention something that helped me prevent the drag caused by the quilt dropping off the back of the machine. Before my son-in-law extended my sewing table with a drop leaf off the back, I had to figure out a way to keep my quilt from dragging when I did free motion quilting. My sewing table was against a wall with cabinets on it. I purchased long bungee cords and attached clamps to one end. I attached the clamps to the quilt and hung the other end of the bungee cords over the cabinet doors. If you don't have cabinets, you could use some kind of a hook on a wall. I used 3 -4 bungee cords. You have to adjust the bungee cord clamps every so often but it works. Thanks again for all you do for us out here with all your videos.

    The tips in these videos is much appreciated. Also the wisdom passed down from generation to generation is beautiful - 4:27

    I recommend a walking foot for domestic machine straight-line quilting. And grippy gloves (you can find fabric/woven gloves with rubber dots at the Dollar store!). I hope you show us that "something interesting" you were planning to do in the border on your next episode of 'The Final Stitch'.

    I think using a Stitch in the Ditch foot makes that type of quilting so much easier and fun. I also love using the painters tape. I did an entire baby quilt using the tape to do cross hatch quilting. Loved it and it turned out awesome!
    Thank you for doing these special one on one type class. Love it. I just wish they were a little longer and more in-depth. For those of us that can’t get out to take classes this is a great alternative.
