In the biggest surprise to no one ever-RV’s require a lot of repairs and maintenance. We wanted to present a quick summary of the costs of repairs and maintenance (excluding regular anticipated costs like oil changes, lubes, etc).

In the most important of disclaimers- we bought this RV preowned from people who took great care of their vehicle. This was not a forgotten RV rotting away in someone’s backyard- this was something that was cared for.

New Front Tires: $1,097.93

We didn’t actually end up paying any of this as we disputed the charge through Chase this was the total for the bill. The super shady RV mechanic told us that had fixed another problem we had as well but lied through his teeth. We also had a check engine light on immediately after leaving the mechanic. What a dirtbag.

Fan for Bathroom Exhaust: $7.34
Propane LP Leak Detector: $87
Electric Box $11

Oh...but the memories you now have. Priceless!
I know that is a lot of money but if you buy a new comparable rv you will lose that just driving it off the lot. Great video and thanks for keeping good records.
I loved this video! My son thinks he's going to build out a 1994 van cheaply that already needs a new gas tank, rotors, brake pads.....and who knows what else. Youngsters have no clue what things cost to maintain 😆
great video.....I know exactly what you mean. I bought an 05 Tioga for 19.5, spent about 11k so far, including 6 new tires. but...that is the life!
Marneen Zahavi wow. Yes so true!
love the honesty! i bought a new motorhome 10/2018 and it is in the shop already!
don't feel bad.
We don't feel too bad about it. There is a misconception among some though that buying new is a solution to having to do repairs. We've met plenty of people in brand new rigs that have had the same experience as yourself.
Gee, I bought a 28 foot 1992 Fleetwood (50,000 miles) 2 years ago for $500.00. Then put $10,000 into it. But now I have Solar (2 - 280 watt panels & Inverter) New everything like new hoses and tie rods, shock thingys and radiator flush, 2 new tires, replaced the flooring and so much more. I did most of it before I explored from CA to Alaska toTN to CA to CO back to TN and everywhere inbetween. 2017 through 2018. The one real problem I had was in CO where my distributor wires needed to be replaced which was $80.00. Maybe way older RV's are better. I love my Chevy 454 engine. I think the newer RV's are made much cheaper these days. Wait I need to go knock on wood.
Wow that’s epically awesome!
Wow, Very heartbreaking especially since there were low miles on that rig- Stay Safe U-2 💕
Since you bought the RV used it was inevitable to spend money on it . Considering how much you guys traveled and constantly on the road any mechanical issues had to be taken care of right away . Yes it cost money, but the last thing you want to do when you on the road toward your next destination is dealing with unexpected breakdown and get stuck in the middle of nowhere . But the great thing about the RV is that you have all your accommodations ,transportations , dining , itineraries in one place , and that is what makes a road trip so cool .
Looks like you probably saved a lot doing some of the work yourself. Another video says labor can run anywhere from $80 to $120 per hour depending on where you at. Learning to do your own repairs is golden. Just subscribed to your channel. Thanks
finally! the real RV story!
Thank you for all the information
Thanks for this informative video. I'm a campervan wannabe amf this is good information to know.
We bought our first trailer used & yes, had to do a lot of repairs - we broke even or may have made a few bucks when we sold it. We bought the Rpod new, but when you drive something new off the lot, you lose in the resale value. Less things to worry about new, but more $$$ up front. We still love it though!
Very true about immediate depreciation!
Hi Aussie Mom! It is a small(ish) travel trailer - looks like a big tear drop. It is in our profile picture or if you pop over to our channel our "trailer" shows it along with several other videos. Thanks for asking :)
Good video. We did 35,000 last year with our travel trailer and SUV on our 1 year long sabbatical. We were lucky, other than new tires and some minor odds and ends we faired well.
That's a HELL of a lot of miles! We'd def go the TT or 5th wheel route if we did it again. Get a reliable vehicle would take a lot of the problems out of the equation.
I guess Murphy's law is present at all times!! Great video!
since the rv was your housing for the year, how would those costs weigh against rentals for a year?
Great video suggestion! We haven’t put the numbers together yet but are planning an RV living budget video coming up at the end of Feb/early March
Repairs come out at about $1. per mile. Sounds like a lot but that's the way it is unless you have a really good Motorhome or unless your just lucky.
Yes, the costs can be much more of an expense than one might think Tim/Allison. I went out to fire up our motorhome, thinking we'll head out next month for a trip to Arizona, and quickly found the jacks/levellers keypad won't turn on, and I had a pretty good propane leak next to the shut-off valve near the tank.....SO, will need a call to one of our local RV service centres tomorrow! Upon doing a quick search on jacks/levellers, someone who had so many issues they replaced it completely with a different brand, which was $6,200.00 or (since I'm Canadian) $8,200.00 for me....SO, I'm hoping mine will be an easy fix...guess I'll find out soon. Thanks for the video....always so much to learn, and I have more of your video's to catch up on...so off I go!
Thanks Dale!
We're currently renovating our RV and this is a really good gauge for how much we need fo save up! Thank you!
Loved your video and what else can you way but that one is fixed. I'm 65 and wishing to see the USA I can't wait
to get my used class A . Why does this bother me ? LOL
It's great that at least you guys try to fix stuff yourself but like you said you cannot always do that on the road. I'm sure that as time goes by you will find you can do more things.
Its frustrating when you don't have your entire toolbox available to crack up to fix things. You have to make do or be fine with having someone else do the work.
I Know on one hand you want to bring all your tools but because of weight and space you cannot. That make be a good topic for a video. Stay safe and have fun.
Been waiting for this!!! Thank you!!!
I think you got out pretty cheap for a 12-year-old coach most of the stuff was just general maintenance tires break's ball joint seals tune-up which was the real killer when you were out on the road. The RV I would have asked if the breaks where done and when at 42 thousand mile and I would have brought a 6ton jack and jack the front end up to check it I am a stickler I even would have checked the gear oil in the rear end I would have done a complete tune-up before I started the journey changed all fluid's filters to new and I mean all. I always have a spare water pump on hand if you are doing a lot of blacktop driving grease every month and a lot of off-road boondocking every 2 weeks I will mist the RV videos because you did a great job on them better than Most!
Thanks very much! Let’s more coming still the next two months.
I'm looking to get an RV but I'm trying to find one with a fiberglass roof I don't want any leaks I'm clumsy I could probably tear a hole right in that rubber roof going under a tree
That intro😂😂
Great video, thanks.
Dec. 11, 2019---Thanks for the video, but think you screwed up big time when you bought it. Why? I've seen at least one video where the person tells you to hire someone who is qualified to inspect RV's. This runs around $300 and the inspector has a check list to find out what's good/bad about the vehicle.
Dad died Jan. 2019 and is leaving me some money. Realize life is too short no matter how long you may live. Plan on buying a used class A, though not sure if it'll be here in Reno or Ocala, Florida. Been checking prices on both cities via Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. Plan on spending a month or two several times a year with youngest brother and his family. I got Dads boat, so will look for a small vehicle which can tow it so I don't have to use the motorhome to launch it.
If it is new RV, I have heard a lot of things break just driving down the road, rattling, jangling. Is that true?
So that we can factor in resale...would you mind sharing how much you sold your RV for at the end? you bought is for $21k with 30k miles on it right?
RV stands for "Ruined Vacation."
not really, rv is like a car, if you do all the required maintenance, change parts when they are old, you can have trouble free vacations. Most people want to save a buck and not do the proper maintenance
Engine broke because... IT IS A GAS GET A FREAKING DIESLE PEOPLE GAS IS NOT WORTH IT
my diesle RV has 99,115 miles I saw it yesterday, and it will run to 500,000 miles easy. Gas struggles
My RV is a 1997 allegro bus and we bought it used for 30 ,000 it was really worth it we got our moneys worth
The costs you mention do not even include the costs for the renovation. What was that cost?
We bought a 2011 gas 31 ft Georgetown in April. Have taken out on 3 trips so far. Two were short trips. One was almost 2,000 miles over 6 days. Cost so far..
1,000 new air conditioner
265 new slide seals
320....replace fuse for burned out leveling jacks
And now need new bathroom sink. Two nights ago the faucet exploded off sink sending water up to ceiling and floor. Thank God we were in RV.
When we get home, we will need 4 tires for cost of about 2,000.
But this is far less expensive than throwing away interest on buying new rv. New rvs also need lots of maintenance and cost of driving to/from rwpair shop is expensive, tume consuming, and disappointing. Rv ownership is not for everyone, but it can be rewarding and less expensive than staying at RBNB's or hotels.
We are going to move up from this gas rv to diesel. Because....driving elevation mountains is frightening in a gas vehicle.
Guess the best advice so fsr I can think of....determine how you will use rv, how long you will use it each year, how far you will drive it, then look for rv that can handle that use.
I know folks who own diesel rvs who take good care of them, live in them full time, drive about 200 miles a month, and have very few problems. I talk to many rv owners. B
RV renovation cost video coming in February or March ☺️ in the meantime safe travels!
I see so many people get them cheep RVs and they fall apart left and right... $15k to $20k and dump $10k more in to them...
We met people with millions dollar rigs that had water pump problems first trip out. So...
You're lucky you're living in the United States of America any country outside is a lot more expensive for parts and labour. I'm lucky I can do the most of these jobs myself but most people are not in that position. Regardless you have a great looking RV that will give you a great deal of pleasure at a relative low financial burden.
Its still frustrating even in the states. It's difficult to get parts when your "car" doesn't run and you're typically not supposed to be doing any repairs at any RV parks we've been to. Most important? I'm always missing that guy back home that knows all about cars and can drink my beer while he tells me what to do.
I wondered where my bad luck went! Lol!
What about if your just in the city just living in it (cause rents to dahm high CA) , Im thinking of one to get and just live in for a year or two ?
No wonder your friend was grinning so much, $
He had a terrible end of the deal- he had to help me work on a motorhome during a WI winter. ;)
I'm very disturbed that you and I share the same first name.
OUCH
My wallet cried for yours.
still better then spending 80000 on a new one
Hah totally true!
Smashing a tire with a hammer is not repairing a car
Lol
