    I cannot believe how this race wasn't promoted more...or at all. Surely, the fact that some chap was trying to run two consecutive sub-4 minute miles and break a 20 odd year old record is worth a bit of media coverage in the build up to the attempt. The BBC coverage was dreadful. It should have been the highlight of the meet but the BBC only showed a brief "highlights of the race" clip. Ridiculous!

You wont get the world lead distance runner, who's the reigning Olympic champ on the 1500's & world champ on the 5 K to to show up on your event for free (Golden league or not), yet alone go for a WR deemed impossible. Logically, the whole purpose of making that kind of an investment, is gaining as much profit as possible from it. And for that to happen, the 'star event' is the one to promote, as well as ensure gets the TV coverage! These guys, on the other hand, appear to have managed to put their biggest star in a side-event.. This just don't make any sense, what so ever!

      @@rayfreeth5156 you’re talking about his 3000 world record. That’s when the commentators were laughing at the pace he was going out at. Though idk if he had pacers for the 2 mile WR either.

      @@FascinateNonExoticKeepers Komen was just an absolute machine. So was Haile back then. The Gebrselassie-Komen races in Zurich in 1996 and 1997 were just magical. Especially 1997, where Gebrselassie did to Komen exactly what Komen had done the previous year, except running faster and setting a WR.

  • @Oenloveslife
    @Oenloveslife Před rokem +45

    I've heard people say numerous times that Komen's 7:58.61 was a "soft" record. Really? No one (many great runners including Geb) ever came close to it, or really to 8 minutes (Geb closest at 8:01, also more than 20 years ago). But what makes this record so astonishing is how far ahead of all the other world class runners Jakob was. What that says to me is that he is in a class alone.

    • @nvan78
      @nvan78 Před rokem +5

      @@BakangSerame really? Komen had two pacers in his race but no wavelight technology, nor the added performance advantage of a bouncy Mondo track or carbon shoes. The latter by the way, can be a second per lap for an efficient runner like Jakob.

    • @Oenloveslife
      @Oenloveslife Před rokem +6

      @@BakangSerame If it is a soft record then why were the other world class runners so far behind him, and why has no one else other than Komen ever broke 8 minutes? The only other records that look harder to me are Komen's 7:20.67 for 3000m and maybe El Geroujj's 3:26.00 for 1500?

      It was an amazing record for its time, but I think it was quite outdated and multiple people could have done it over the years. I mean Joshua Cheptegei could have for sure cuz he ran 3!! 4:01 miles in a row a couple years ago. No one really runs 2 mile race though that’s why it stood for so long.
