Restoring & Sharpening A Disston Crosscut Saw

  • I recently purchased another job lot of old tools near Ballylongford Co.Kerry.
    This was one of two crosscuts in the pile. Given its relatively small size, which makes it easy to transport and more importantly operate alone, I think it will become the most used of my crosscut saws.

    I’m a real big fan of how when you went to put that rivet or pin back in your first thought was “I have a screwdriver in my hand let me use that as a hammer” and then right before you hit it your next thought was “Wait a minute there’s a hammer right next to me”

    I recently told a friend if he tired of his computer he could come over and pull a saw.( he gave me a blank stare). I relate to you Eoin, it's hard to find someone willing to exert themselves in this day and age.

    Enjoying the channel. Might cut better if you joint the teeth to they are all the same height and then make sure they are all set the correct amount. This is what I've gleaned from reading and talking to people. Also coat the saw with candlewax will reduce friction and last too

    I've been wanting to get one of those short cross-cut saws for awhile, but never run into one for a decent price. Lynx, out of Sheffield England, is the last maker of good blades in the West, as far as I can tell. New, the saws are excellent, if costly.

    • @user-qr3nz1wi2j
      @user-qr3nz1wi2j Před 3 měsíci

      Nobody ever got tetanus from rust, it’s a robust bacteria that lives dormant a long time in soil but originates mostly from horse dung, needs a deep penetrating wound to get the right conditions to take hold - like a barbed wire stab or stepping on an old nail😮

  • @vanstaden
    @vanstaden Před rokem +1

    I have the exact same saw, mine cuts 10x faster. What you didn't do was to "set the teeth". Your saw will cut like shit if you don't use a set tool to set every individual tooth. These saws cut like a dream. Dry or wet wood, its a machine

    • @DogFishAttack
      @DogFishAttack Před rokem

      Hi, When setting the teeth of Great American saw like this, they must all be set in the same straight line or some have a curved?

    • @vanstaden
      @vanstaden Před rokem +1

      @@DogFishAttack Some people curve the tip when using the saw set, which will work in some way, but it won't be effective. If you want to set it properly youll need to set each tooth, not only the tip. Meaning /\ the whole tooth should be slightly bent 0.05 ever so slightly wider than the saw blade body itself to perform that looseness, and clean cut.

    • @vanstaden
      @vanstaden Před rokem +1

      @@DogFishAttack saw teeth are set oppositely from one another. One left one right, we call this the cross cut effect. Different than a rip saw, the cross cut works for cutting down trees and branches etc. Where the rip saw is more aggressive and tooth are straight lined back to back, we use this saw to cut wood vertically, like you would use an axe to split wood.

    • @vanstaden
      @vanstaden Před rokem +1

      @@DogFishAttack If you ever find someone that takes part in these crosscut 2 man saw/ 1man saw competitions, they will tell you the same thing. And look at how fast those saws cut. Because in stead of using only a bent tip of the saw to cut with, they use the whole body of each tooth, that results in a more aggressive cut, taking out more wood with each pull. I have a 1947 Crosscut myself, and it still works like a charm. I sharpen it about 6 times a year. But once sharpened correctly, you won't sharpen it again for a long time. That high carbon steel they made in the olden days to manufacture these saws is something that does not exist today. They last forever
