  • It can be frustrating trying to remove wall plate from the thermostat when you first open the package. After the thermostat is mounted on the wall, you get better leverage to remove the thermostat to change batteries.

I'm replacing my unit because at one point I pulled so hard the front slipped out of my hands and bounced all over the ceramic tiles. Now, if I push the front too hard the screen blanks out. Scary to have a non working thermostat when it's -40 outside. Thank you for this very good video. You're helping a lot of people.

I just found your channel after a day of frustration trying to open the front of my thermostat. All the other videos I encountered had a battery pack that was easily removable from the side. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! This video, albeit made years ago, was made for me to find today!! God’s blessings on you and yours, sir :)

Good grief! Thanks a million! I could NOT pry the back off for fear of breaking the housing.
Figured that maybe someone on CZcams had the same problem and posted a solution.
TWO THUMBS UP to Kenneth Smith! Yeah!
You would think that Honeywell would have included a note about this ... uh, Nah.
I used a small tea spoon to pry from the center first, then from the left side a little, then from the right side a little, etc.
    Additional notes :
    (1) The top side of the face plate has a "hook" type hinge such that it hooks behind its mate located on the wall plate, so you definitely do not want to try to pry away the face place using the top side. Work from the bottom.
    (2) Remember to set the System to OFF before you remove/replace the batteries. In fact, probably a good idea to set the system to OFF before you even remove the face plate.
    (3) When replacing the face plate, first hook the top side of the face plate to the wall plate (due to the hook hinge above), then rock the bottom of the face plate into position. Be care to accurately seat the contact pins into position.
    (4) Make sure that your final thumb presses to seat the face place are done from just below the left/right corners of the display, as the pins are located here between these points and this is where most of your resistance lies. You will in the process also firmly seat the pins.
    Good luck!
UPDATE (4/12/2018): Using the provided plastic anchors in drywall was not firm enough to keep the thermostat in place. First time I tried to remove the cover, and because the face plate is so difficult to remove, the plastic anchors pulled right out of the drywall. Luckily there was a stud behind the drywall which I could tap into. Nevertheless for drywall-only anchoring, you'll probably need to use some sort of toggle anchor, which spreads out behind the drywall.

Thank you so much! I am installing a new thermostat (a different model than yours) and was having so much difficulty getting it open. I was so afraid of breaking it. Once I understood how it was held together, it came apart with just a little effort. Now I can finish the job.

My cover did NOT want to come off. So I used a butter knife - lengthwise - and on the right side, just a little, to pry it off and it popped right off! Thank you! I placed it back on after changing the batteries and it’s working fine after having to go through a few simple setting prompts.

Knowing this helped so much! Thank you for posting. Someone (dad) attached this thermostat to the hallway using deficient wall anchors, so trying to remove the unit's cover was pulling it out of the wall, not something we want to be doing with those wires in there. I blame poor design on Honeywell's part more than my dad's issue with mounting it. (He was 84) (Didn't need a screwdriver, just a bit of determination and patience)

  • @mzkrush7792

Thank you, that is exactly what I was I thinking my issue was , but unfortunately my thermostat is not mounted to the wall. I wanted to make sure it would work properly before drilling and what not. Now, I am sad that I didn't. It is making it extremely difficult to remove the cover from the unit. Shame on Honeywell for a horrible design concept, there should be some sort of tab to release the cover. I thank you for your video. Back to trying to unstick mine. If anyone has any suggestion please, let me know. Single lady, novice DIY !! : )

Thank you for posting this, I just received one of these and am cursing the Engineers who designed it. This is an overly complicated contraption which is unnecessarily difficult to open. The Engineer who Designed this should be fired. I can imagine this ripping off the wall the first time I try to change the Batteries. I strongly recommend avoiding Honeywell Products.
