I think you’re right with him “flipping the script.” She mentions how he made it feel like every issue was her fault. My interpretation (based on just my thoughts) is that he has painted them both in a certain light, but he’s trapped by his own perspective (which high looks dangerously like broken glass). Notice that he only moves his head, whereas she steps free and even walks over to him in an effort to communicate. She says she can’t live that way, and she’s able to leave. Although she’s visibly affected by the breakup, she purposefully removes herself from that fractured relationship (& paint). Thank you for your thoughts, Terell.

I think the ending represents how she erased the memories with him and he is still stuck with the memories that is why he is still painted and she is not.

The Ending part, I see it as her removing herself out of the picture (relationship) and the narrative that he has been painting in his head. Most ugly breakups don’t see eye to eye especially in the heat of the moment.
He “painted” this picture of their relationship, telling us his perspective of how he felt and basically blaming her for not staying friends afterwards. When we first see her, she is already part of his painting but she stand up for herself - MOVING towards him, trying to see him eye to eye and explaining her point of view to HIM, not us….. but he immediately dismisses her points and goes back to his narrative that it’s still her fault without looking at her. You can see how irritated he is and looks at us, the audience, trying to convince us that he is in the right…
She gives up and release it’s not worth it no more and removes herself from his narrative and becomes herself again - somebody that he use to know before they were together, before he painted her in his picture.

    Here's my interpretation:
He starts by saying that the relationship just wasn't working, how she could kill for him but he wasn't feeling it. They had to break it off, but while he wants bu be friends he's hurt because she wants to break it off completely. He thinks it's shitty that she's just treating him like someone that she used to know. He's happy the relationship is over, but doesn't like the way it ended.
She then tells her story. That she was insecure, hung up on everything he said. That she kept catching him hung up on an ex (somebody that he used to know).
He then basically concedes that she's right, but says that even then she didn't need to treat him that way, just like somebody that she used to know.

I don’t think there is an ex. I think she is that somebody that you used to know. My guess is this song is portraying him as a narcissist. She talks about how he screws her over and makes her think it’s always something that she did wrong. He winces when she says that showing that he probably knows it’s the truth. He doesn’t deny it either. He isn’t sad or heartbroken over the relationship ending like she is, but instead his ego is hurt that she cut him off afterwards. Like he doesn’t want her, yet he’s upset she moved on. Very narcissistic tendencies. Even in the song he only faces her when she walks away from him and leaves

@@tmm4195you’re right about the narcissism bit, but I do think “catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know” is him still hung up on an ex. It starts in the first verse where he acknowledges his patterns: “addicted to a certain kind of sadness… resignation to the end, always the end”. I take that as him acknowledging he gets in relationships but always drives them into the ground … like self fulfilling prophecy, he does this in every relationship and he will do it again

i think she’s not coloured anymore because she is now somebody he used to know, so a stranger. she’s not in his life/world anymore and i’m guessing the colour represents his world

Yeah he definitely feels like an unreliable narrator in this. So busy blaming her/being the victim that he won't listen to her or even look at her until she's given up and moving on. Definitely recommend you check out more Kimbra! This is the song that introduced me to her and she's very cool! two songs of hers I really liked were 'settle down' and 'good intent'.

A couple things. Did you like the song? I can't tell because you commented on it but you didn't really react to it. And also she was being unpainted because she was no longer a part of his "picture" I gave your reaction a thumbs up but you got to let us know when you like a song or not

Great reaction and commentary! I found you through your reaction to James Arthur! I hope youll react to some more of his music! Maybe his cover of Billie Eilish "I Love You" or any song on his 5th album "Blindside", or his cover "A Thousand Years"!
