    Here are the tips and details on how I'm going to be filtering and setting up my 210 gallon "monster" aquarium. It's a huge tank that is requiring a lot of planning to ensure I get it running perfectly. Here's a look behind the scenes, from a DIY sump, to plumbing, to lighting, to substrate,, to canisters. All of it! It's taking shape and I hope to be able to share the tank with you, running and stocked with fish, in the not too distant future!
    Please feel free to share your thoughts, tips and experience below because, as you know, we all learn from each other at this channel.
    Remember to ALWAYS BE LEARNING and never forget that YOU ROCK!
    Keeping fish is truly a fluid situation. What works for one fish keeper or for one set-up might not work for another. I encourage you to please do lots of research, gathering information from various sources, before making any major changes or making any major decisions about your tank.

    Those 14 inch socks will work very nice Ben...get 15-20 of them so you don't have to wash them for a month to 6 weeks. Don't be surprised if you realize that you don't even need the FX6 once your sump is dialed in. Those socks do a fantastic job of keeping the main tank looking sparkling.
    I didn't realize you were doing over the top returns...this works fine but you may want to consider drilling a return line... looking great 👍
    Oh, and if you get any drip leaks at the bulkheads on the rear of the tank when everything is up and running, just put some petroleum jelly on the rubber gaskets in the bulkheads...95% of leaks are always at the bulkheads and easily fixed.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 2 lety

      Thanks GP! One fellow put a little silicone on his bulkheads. What do you think about that?

    • @GSP-76
      @GSP-76 Před 2 lety +1

      @@BenOchart Yes, you could do that but I would use silicone grease so that if you ever need to take the bulkhead apart in the future, it could easily be done...any kind of grease will do. I didn't have silicone grease when I set my tank up so I used the next best thing - petroleum jelly and I have no had a single drip ever since.
      You may not even get a leak because your tank was drilled by Glasscages and they use heavy duty equipment to drill those holes perfectly. Most of us use a diamond bit on a drill and you get slight chips when the hole gets drilled. Those little cracks cause drip leaking. I can't wait to see how it all works out for you.

    Ive seen your update vid and very excited for you. It was commented before but I really feel you should consider a bigger sump. 29 gal is nice but for a 210g, big fish load you know is comming and the room you have to work with a 40gal plus will give you more space, water volume and options for the future to toy with. Maybe an algae scrubber, bio media or a secondary return pump for redundancy. You have the time and chance now before you load up tank. Watching like a hawk
    ..lol. Blessings to you.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 2 lety

      I agree that a bigger Sump is better. The 29 seems to be working well and at 2500gph is doing quite a bit of filtering. I’ve backed it up with a Fluval FX-6 and I think between the two I should be okay. My dream sump would be a 100 gallon😉😀👍🏻

    I am a fan of sicce pumps. They haven't given me a problem yet, maybe because I don't let them go forever without maintenance. But about every 6mths I go in and clean the impellers

  • @joshhopper6109
    @joshhopper6109 Před 2 lety +1

    Good work sir. You have obviously done some serious research on how to set this up. I'm sure you know this but you can use the valves directly after the overflow to time the outflow. One side that goes to my sump is lower in the overflow box and is closed down a little so that it full siphon's. the other side that is a little higher in my over flow box is fully open does not full siphon (unless I'm topping off my tank) and it flows to my 40 breeder for grow out that is plumbed in line (it has its own sponge filter and overflow pipe running over to the sump). My system has been running for about 2 years now and I noticed the other day my check valve is due for cleaning. It works for the most part but I can hear it hammering so its letting a little water by when the pump is off. I'm also looking at running an auto top off and planning to put my 3D printing skills to work and design and make my own DIY rotary drum filter to put before the sump. Right after your 3 rows of sponges but before the baffle in your sump you could put some floating media with either a power head or a bubbler to stir it to make a fluidized bed.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 2 lety

      Very good points. I have a bad of floating blue balls. Do you think those are good or a waste of space?

    • @joshhopper6109
      @joshhopper6109 Před 2 lety +1

      @@BenOchart I think they are beneficial... I have filter floss (cotton batting) instead of filter socks, then pot scrubbers then bio balls. My sump is acrylic and where yours has the 2 baffles between the sponges and the pump mine has the same baffles with little standoffs in between that I can put a piece of light diffuser on top of and I can put the bio balls on top of that.

  • @HalfManHalfCichlid
    @HalfManHalfCichlid Před 2 lety

    I target 80% of the internal volume of a sump being biological media. I use nearly exclusively sponges at this time. If the media you have shown is all that is going in your sump I believe you are wasting a lot of space. I would add additional 20 and even 30 ppi sponges to the remaining open spaces, downstream from existing media. If the foam you have is 10ppi, in my set-ups they go more than a year without cleaning, a clear indication that they do not catch small particles. The 20 and 30 ppi sponges would do a good job of picking up detritus that escapes the 10 ppi foam. Hope this helps. PS, i know you want to try the socks, which work well for saltwater, but I tried them and ended up using 10 ppi foam in it's place, less maintenance and foam has a lot more biological capacity than socks.

  • @Joker-bx4rk
    @Joker-bx4rk Před 2 lety +1

    It's pretty impossible to over flood from the sump as long as the out let hose is located right using a overflow box as you have the only thing is water evaporation too watch out for just a heads up

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 2 lety

      Yes! I have an ATO but I don’t think I can use it in this system. Evaporation is one drawback to sumps

      @@BenOchart I'm currently making a few changes to my set up im going too rehome the tiger oscar and get a lemon oscar with as little black pattern as possible and I'm going too add either a Cichlasoma festae or the mesohero festae but currently leaning towards the mesohero festea. This will create some fantastic colours to the aquarium

    Why not drill a hole in the return just above the waterline? That way it won't block and you have no back syphon.

    Very interesting I’ve never made or used a sump before. One question i have is why a 29g for the sump? Isn’t that kind of small for a 210g tank? I think I would have used a 40g or 55g. I know you are also using an FX6 so it should be fine.
