    This is not only in Kenya. I think this is or was the trend all over Africa.
    I am Namibian and was raised this way too. At 12, I was already cooking and sharing the household chores with my sister.
    Yes, to some it's abuse but to us Africans, who grew up this way, it teaches you to be responsible from a very young age.

    • @smalltownhomesteadAC
      @smalltownhomesteadAC Před měsícem +2

      It’s not abuse. It’s necessary. All cultures have done the same thing as they were developing. The western school system has summer holidays for 1 reason. Kids did not go to school during harvest season as they were needed to bring in the harvest for the family. Hence the modern, Summer holidays. Things will change but it takes time. No reason imo to denigrate something that may at this time be a necessity.

      responsible kids = responsible adults.
      The majority of the kids from western cultures who were "allowed to be kids" never grew up. They act immature and irresponsible to this day, even though some of them are proper seniors. Parents started "letting kids be kids" by expecting less of them back in the 90's and those kids have all grown up to be full grown infants (some might go so far as to call them::degenerates). Western culture is proof that coddling kids is BAD for their development.
      imo

    People who are forced to be poor turn out higher quality personalities and characters. Faced with minimum resources and comforts, they learn to appreciate the things that make their lives better. We are very spoiled in America. Those who have the least bit of motivation still have running water, beds with pillows, and food. With decent parenting, these children learn perseverance and frugality as steps to pull ahead, because we have the means. I like having the kitchen separate from the general area. It is better that way. Thank you for this video.

      Perhaps she is not smiling because she is camera shy. It’s important for these types of videos to acquaint ourselves with other cultures. Mary is very well rounded and the household chores are not that difficult. She is being well prepared for adulthood. Too many children are to spoiled,entitled and soft. Teaching a person to fish is proverbial. If she were in any other environment/ home she was be classified as “mommies little helper!” Perhaps a look from the inside window is better than an outside view. Outside perspective is always difficult. Life is different in many area.

I'm glad I learned to do all of that because my now husband loves my cooking skills. However, I do not agree with the exploitation of a child. I hate it when families have 7 kids and a young kid has to be responsible for them. Mom and dad had those kids not her. This only subjugate women at a young age to accept abuse as a normal way of living. At the age of 4 I was sexually assaulted for years until I was 12. I was the youngest of two sisters and both of us felt like we couldn't say anything because of the whole patriarchal way we're raised to think it was our fault.

For who, we all, male and female should enjoy the fruits of the land as it is written in the Holy Scriptures. Mary is just a child, shouldn’t be put in this burden of the family and set to prematurely being given the Adult Responsibility only for the sake of being a great lady. Poor Cultural norms that need to be changed instead of being embraced. This is the life of the 1890’s great grandmothers not for 21st century, then later on to be married to drunkard man as a 4th wife at the age of 13; who was chosen by elders in the clan, divorced at the age of 19 with 6 children to care for, and recycling the life style she has been through 😩. That is not something to be proud of. Stop advertising this as normal please. Make the videos on how the life can be improved not the ones embracing the poverty, bad cultures of progressive abuse to the children. Another thing, advise your society to build one big house with rooms, as the separate houses cause 90% of children to be sexually abused by bad adults around and told that if they speak to anyone then the abuser will kill the rest of the family. Connect those walls of two houses to one for protection of our family, let children go to school, let adults get married ( not children) and decide to have the family they can afford. Thought of the day is, If you’re children don’t achieve more than their parents in lifetime, then the parents are FAILURES.

This isnt "abuse," this is real life and survival. As an adult, im a mother, wife and business owner, because i learned responsibility at a young age, not later in life when i already made the mistakes... There were nine of us children. Jimmy was in the Navy so that meant eight most of the time. Our parents did very little housework. Papa was often at sea and Mama worked a civilian job on base, so it was up to us to do the cooking, cleaning, washing, and getting ourselves to school or to get our home lessons done and corrected. Everyone except the babies had lots of chores to do. Nobody got in trouble or turned to drink, drugs, or bad relationships because there was no time for that. We all turned out self-supporting, responsible adults. Our life circumstances were quite different from a village in Africa, usually on-base housing or a rented home close to base, but the principles were the same.

      @Chelsea Turner no, I meant spoiled! I'm 55 yrs old when I was a young tween I was already helping my mom with chores while she worked 2 jobs most times. This "country" has become selfish, completely self consumed, and all kids think of is I want, I want , give me this give me that & are completely disrespectful, care nothing about life or the meaning of it! We were VERY fortunate to be born into what we have here, I really think most have forgotten this. This young girl is doing what is necessary to help their family survive- is it fair looking where we sit? Probably not to most but again, we've become a very selfish spoiled country hell most kids don't even have values today! It's like the more you give, the more they want. These children there are SO appreciative of what they do have ! So take it any way you choose but this is how I feel. God help this country 🙏🏻
