In engineering we call it 'Expansion Gap' we use it in designing products where there is constant dimensional variations mostly due to temperatures from sun exposure.. If you have drive on the Pokuase interchange you will notice that gaps on it as well. The sun will cause the iron rods in the concrete to expand hence, the gap is provided to accommodate for the expansion and contraction.
