Dear Dr. Grossi,
I am addressing you today as I am deeply worried about the situation in my country, Ukraine.
The war which Russia started against Ukraine more than a week ago has already caused many victims and Russian bombs have destroyed Ukrainian cities, towns and villages, including crucial infrastructure.
A huge threat, however, which may have global consequences is emerging from the nuclear power plants in my country. Not only in Chernobyl, but also now at several other plants which are currently in operation, Russian troops have interfered in the operation of the plants, including shootings and bombs on the critical parts of those plants, and by threatening the professional staff of these plants.
Such military activities pose a huge risk not only to the staff of the power plants and to the people which are close to these plants, including Ukrainian but also Russian soldiers. A major explosion at these plants may lead to an unprecedented release of nuclear substances and radiation, much worse than what the world faced in the disasters of Chernobyl or Fukushima.
Following media reports, I understand that you have noticed the great risk that comes from this situation. Please use your influence to stop the huge threat which arises from military action directed against the nuclear power plants in Ukraine!
I request you urgently to propose to the international community to set up a demilitarised zone of 30 kilometres around each nuclear power plant, in order to ensure that neither by intended bombardment nor as collateral damage or by mistake an explosion from outside is damaging any of the nuclear power plants in Ukraine.
