I like the fact that Sabaton has never been apologetic about their music: they teach history and their music has nothing to do with racism, period. I should, however, explain why their music provoked that negative response in Sweden at the time:
During the '90s and '00s, Sweden saw a considerable rise in racism and right-wing extremism. This was a tumultuous and frightening time in Swedish modern history; a time of neo-nazi terrorist attacks, deadly hate crimes and extremist groups arming themselves. Today it may seem unfathomable, but during the 90s and early 00s, the largest neo-nazi demonstration in Northern Europe took place annually in the Stockholm suburb of Salem.
⠀⠀Songs in the style of Sabaton were very popular among neo-nazis and played an important role as a means of spreading their propaganda and, what is worse, as a major source of income for these extremist groups. Songs romanticising things like The Swedish Empire and vikings were heavily featured during the neo-nazi gatherings and each year, they demonstrated by a statue of Carolus Rex in Stockholm, spreading their propaganda and doing the nazi salute, et c. I would presume that a lot of "innocent" music got "hijacked" by the neo-nazi movement, not only Sabaton's.
⠀⠀By the beginning of the 2010s and after a lot of hard work from investigative journalists, politicians and police, the neo-nazi movement had pretty much faded away, nevertheless, anything which reminded people of past neo-nazi propaganda - such as their nationalist music - was looked upon with suspicion and fear.
This doesn't justify the prejudiced attitude against Sabaton, but it makes it comprehensible and puts the whole debacle around the Carolus Rex album in perspective - and a historical and factual perspective at that. And as Sabaton continues to teach us: there's always a larger historical context.

Unfathomable indeed to believe they were openly demonstrating annually in the early 2000's... I could see how new generations could relate their music to such a heinous group. Unfortunately not many people are willing to educate, I suppose it's easier to hate and discard that which seems hateful instead of exploring the original meanings of certain topics. Just like how the Swastika was highjacked by the Nazis. Thanks for that in-depth clarification!!! It did not and will not stop me from promoting Sabaton!!!

And it's hilariously easy to poke holes in people's prejudices against Sabaton; whenever anyone claims that or asks whether Sabaton are nazi sympathisers, racists and/or glorifying war I simply ask if they've ever listened to their music. The answer is, of course, always no.

The problem with modern humans or political thinking is we want to interpret history with a modern lens and not through a lens appropriate to the time when the event happened. As a monarchist, this pisses me off because then you use history for propaganda and not as a map to ancient wisdom.

Regarding the not taking any oath thing in the lyrics, that was in regard to the Catholic Church.
The oaths at his coronation were a massive (and successful) power move to insist that no, they would swear their oaths of loyalty *NOW* because they were not making him King, he was already King. In his mind, if he asked for their oaths of loyalty after, it was like asking for their permission to rule. And he wasn't about to ask *ANYONE* for permission, so they could accept him now or face the consequences.
Also, yes, Charles XII was basically one of the most badass teenagers to ever walk the Earth. One of the most quintessential quotes from him was when he was on the field for his first real battle and heard the cannons and guns firing.
He's reported to have taken in the sights and sounds of battle favorably, because he then stated "This shall hence become my music."

So about saying his name when they pray,he basically thought or felt that he had been given his power straight from God,that he was divine,he never swore an oath to the "church" wich was pretty much common practice back then. If I may add a suggestion to an idea: how cool would the experience not be for you to listen to the song again after the history, and then maybe do a live version? First the video with your thoughts. Then history where everything will be explained. And finishing off with the live version, where the entire song just is so much clearer for you... Just an idea. Really nice. Cheering for you to get this channel growing!
Another "fun" fact that occured on 4th of july this year:
Our Primeminister visited Kyiv, Ukraine and held a pressconference with the President of Ukraine and gifted Ukraine a letter Karl XII (Carolus Rex) wrote in 1711 stating that the Zaporizjzja cossaks shall be freed from the opression by the Russian tsar. This letter was sent to the ambassador in Constantinople so the liberty of this (today Ukrainians) people could occur. However our Primeminister is the leader of the Socialdemocrats (left) and this year we're having an election. So the pressconference was'nt given much more attention and was cut down in statemedia and got as much cover as a broken down car on the freeway would have.. or even less. Government funded newspapers did'nt cover this at all of what I could find. Even though this happend on the same day US celebrates their indenpendance and the same day (this year) Putin declared victory in Luhansk.. Ukraine got a 300 year old letter admitting their liberty. So with all this in mind.. you could imagine how it would appear if the socialist Primeminister propagated history of Karl XII with a smile on her face outside of our borders but back home bashes down others as racists/nazi and all that for having "wrong" opinion. This goes unfortunately very well in hand with what Pär explained in the clip.

Karl XII of Sweden was the last absolute monarch in a line and was ultimately a bit of a disaster for the Swedish Empire.
He believed that he was God's representative on Earth - this was not uncommon in 17th and 18th century Europe. Weirdly the least powerful monarchs were the British where the parliament had much more power than the monarch.
At his death most of the Swedish Empire was gone and the power of the parliament was increased.

Carolus Rex (Karl XII) believed that everything was preordained, by an all-powerful all-knowing god. So God had already decided what would happen: death or life, was already preordained. All we could do was live and serve to the best of our abilities. That also means that anything that he said had already been decided by God: he ruled by divine decree, not by the church, but answering to no one but God himself.
