  • More info about travel to the Costa del Sol: www.ricksteves.com/europe/spa... The Rock of Gibraltar stands like a fortress at the gateway to the Mediterranean. With its strategic setting, Gibraltar has an illustrious military history and remnants of its martial past are everywhere. But within a generation the economy has gone from one dominated by the military to one based on tourism.

I had a scuffle with a barbary ape there yesterday atop the rock, it was trying to get into my mother's handbag so I grabbed it's arm and pulled it away. It lunged at me and grabbed my hand then went back for the bag, I pushed it away and it gave up and climbed onto the nearby railing.
About 2 minutes later a younger and friendlier one climbed onto my shoulders, I just let it climb around me as it seemed to be having fun.

I love your video and bought your DVDs, but I would love to see you tackle other countries! I know your specialty is Europe, with the occasional trip to Iran or India, but what filming a limited series of travels to Asia, Africa, or South America? Your treatment of European destination is so complete and detail, that it would be a shame not to have the same treatment for a few other destinations, for everyone to enjoy, forever!

You should read a short book called "Vamos a contar mentiras" by Juan and José María Sánchez Galera. It provides some really interesting perspective for Spaniards and us foreigners alike on Spanish history among which the brutal and inhumane conquest of the America's you mentioned (e.g. where are all the Sioux, Cheyenne, Cherokee, Iroquis, Apache etc. compared to the considerable Indian populations in countries such as Ecuador, Bolivia, México, Peru etc.).

0:18 "and as if to remind visitors that they'd left Spain and entered the United Kingdom..." strickly speaking, that's not entirely true. Unlike Ceuta and Melilla, which are treated as integral parts of Spain, Gibraltar is not, nor has it ever been an integral part of the United Kingdom. Gibraltar, like other remaining places that used to be part of the British Empire, is a British Overseas Territory, which is a separate subdivision from the United Kingdom itself, namely, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

Yes and No. It self governing and not a part of the Nation called United Kingdom but it IS a part of the Kingdom called United Kingdom. It falls under the UK crown and thus the UK is responsible for its defense and good governance. The highest court is the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.Gibraltarians are citizens of the United Kingdom.
It is just like Puerto Rico and the United States.

The differences between ceuta and melilla and gibraltar are as follows: - ceuta and melilla are not in the un decolonisation list, gibraltar is
    - ceuta and melilla are integral parts of spain with equal rights and competencies while gibraltar is a crown dependency
    - ceuta and melilla have been part of spain since the 1500s when it unified with portugal, gibraltar only after the 1700s
-gibraltas was an integral part of spain, ceuta and melilla were independent from morrocco and they only recognized religious dominance
    - inhabitants from ceuta and melilla are mostly natives while in gibraltar most of the natives went away and founded la línea de la concepción so the inhabitants now are portuguese, italians and of english descent
    - finally, spain HAS disputed Britains claim on gibraltar while Morrocco has not pushed a formal claim on either ceuta or melilla
