  • My wife was starting the 00 Focus, and the key stuck in the ON position. Wouldn't turn either direction. In this video I show you how to get yourself going again with a temporary fix.
You could probably do this on the road without tools if need be. It just depends on what you keep with you, or in your car. Just skip past the part with the drilling and do what I show at the end!!!

I have never left a comment on anything, but I have to leave one now. This worked! Been struggling to find the issue for a week. Mechanics even looked at it and consulted=nothing. Fuses =nothing. Resets=nothing. Until I found your video! I had previously removed the actual switch and it would only power all the electronics on. But it would not start the engine! I did all of the steps numerous times (except the drilling) over the last few days - except for one. I did not have the actual key in the switch! So I saw your video, jumped out of bed at 1:00am, and went out to the car. I inserted the key. Then I took a screwdriver and turned the other switch. It started right up! Thank you so much! Now I can at least drive it to a mechanic or use it until I fix it myself! Awesome!

check the shift lock on the transmission shift lever first. see if the small collar around the shaft is stuck in the down position and move the small ring to the up position. if the collar is in the down position the shift lock solenoid will not send a signal to the key cylinder lock mechanism to unlock the key. this collar needs periodic lubrication so spray the shift lever shaft with some wd40.

If you can pull the key out with the ignition running.... It's the beginning of a future faulty switch.

I don't normally reply to these videos as they do help. This video helped get the car started, but if you can't turn the key at all you can't unlock the steering wheel so, you can't drive the car if you can't turn the wheel. Is there a way to unlock the steering wheel??

hehe... good find. you can turn the car into a card reader ignition if you put the key chip in a card that can slot onto the ring, and then use a knob on the cylinder crank receiver.

you gonna locate the sidebar that's locking up the cylinder in the body. Drill to locate & pull the sidebar out, drill the wafers if you don't have a key and clean the shavings out with a pick then the cylinder will allow to turn. turn to acc and depress retainer and the ignition lock cylinder will slide out

You only have to drill if it's stuck in the off position. If it's in the on position then the release pin is lined up and if you stick something in that hole it will release the lock cylinder. When you drilled it in the on position you destroyed that release pin.

Since I couldn't get the switch to turn anymore, I ended up just drilling the entire thing out. It kinda came out in several pieces, but it was out finally!
