The 7 Harshest Continue Screens in Arcade Game History

- The whole point of arcade machines is to get you to insert more coins, which is why they often employ every trick in the book to get you to keep playing. The more horrible these games' continue screens were, the more likely you were to pay up, which is why some of these just have to be seen to be believed. Subscribe for more videos like this one!

van browne Yup always make my friend do that. I miss my friends... I know I should put coin for my friend to continue but I hide it for last chance..... Poor guy.. At least at bright side.. I got more score. 😏
Indeed. That's who you know who your real bro is.
Real talk!
Yes 💯%!
😍
Punisher: **bolts up straight, takes out pistol and starts shooting into the ceiling while yelling**
Micro: Oh thank God, he's okay.
To clarify Darby doesn't just turn you into a poker chips, he steals your very soul and leaves you body a lifless husk
Wow!
Me: "Ha, I beat I can beat this game in three tries..."
Later...
*Proceeds to put in paycheck in the form of coins*
Imagine being a broke kid in the early-mid 90s, except you don't HAVE a paycheck!
Lol
8:40 its not a comedical thing, that is his ability
I made the comment 45 so mista is safe

I think the commentary about it was less based on Darby being a gambler and more based on Osiris (Egyptian god of fertility, agriculture, the afterlife, the dead, resurrection, life, and vegetation) having the ability to smush someone into a poker chip.
It was more of a game-over than a 'continue?' screen, but I remember the mid-90's Rebel Assault game gave you a breakdown of just how screwed the Rebel Alliance became when you died.
Yup it was horrible
tba113 surely traumatizing as a youth. Guilt trip forever
tba113 whats the Name of this game what you mean.
I miss when video game psychologically manipulating people to put more money in was this simple, rather than the loot boxes, virtual currencies, and so forth of today.
Gizensha Fox thats what mobile games are for on your first part
those aren't normal video gams those are arcade machine games, which still exist, and they don't have loot boxes to buy.. the loot boxes today aren't arcade games they're pc games
Agreed stuff like robux and Logan Paul's loot box thing
Funny how they've always been around
Ninja Gaiden's screen was pretty terrifying in the day. Even if he could get the ropes off, he was surrounded by those demons, which looked scarier than anything in the game. This looked more fitting for the game Splatterhouse, which is a horror arcade gem and also popular around the same time.
truth!
Haha them demons... i know why he saw them its cuz he was seeing things tripping off all those steriods he took to stay alive.
Was just about to post about the demon faces. That type of shit was horrifying as a kid.
I remember our local video store had this arcade game way back when i was a little guy and that game over screen scared the hell out of me lol.
Holden It was. You think the ninja is the ultimate badass, but no, ultimately, the darkness of hell awaits with demons and a saw blade of death.
You left out Nick Fury's continue screen in The Punisher. If you run out of lives as Fury, a male S.H.I.E.L.D. agent tries to revive him, while another female agent looks on. If you don't continue, the male agent shakes his head in despair, while the female agent looks away. But if you do continue, the agents express excitement as Fury stands up and smokes a cigar. ...Way to celebrate getting to continue your life, by cutting it even shorter.
JStryker47 I have seen it do you still play it I still play it in 2018
It's been a while, but I played it a lot back in the late 90's and early 2000's, when my brother had a MAME emulator.
From what i heard, the female SHIELD agent is supposedly dating Nick.
The Punisher was made in 1993, when cigars were still good for you.
Really?! You nearly died and now you're killing yourself AGAIN.
Not an arcade game, but as a little kid, I played the game Conquest of the Crystal Palace at my cousin's house. When I ran out of lives, the continue screen has your dog watching/barking at you as you're tied up with your hands behind your back being lowered towards a pit of lava. Have never forgotten that one.
I'm proud of you guys. A whole video about dying in video games without a "You are Dead" dance-off.
I'm not proud of them, I was expecting that dance-off.
There's also the continue screen for the final boss in the first Fatal Fury game. If you lose to him, you'll get kicked from the building the fight takes place at. Shove a quarter and continue or your character will fall to his death. If you win, however, you get to see your character kicking the guy off of the building and see him falling to his death
Wait, that's not how I'm supposed to cross the street? I've been doing it wrong all my life!
typical ninja's...
Atleast the Outsidexbox continue screen is just one of the OX crew politely asking us to watch some other videos, probably as a karmic opposite for all those coins we lost.
Ayan Haider well but if we dont jane destroys our universe so.. you know.
7:43 - "While relatively unknown in the West, _JoJo's Bizarre Adventure_ […]"

… bet someone on the research team got fired for that one. ;)
JOOOOOOOOJO
I LOVE WATCHING IT!
OH MY GOOOODD
Maybe they were referring to the time it was released.
@Alexander Valdez yeah ok boomer
"Turn into pure energy like Micheal Jackson." LOL that laugh felt so good.
When D'arby turns you into a poker chip, he takes your soul. In the manga and anime its a bit different where the soul leaves your body and Osiris takes it. D'arby's brother takes it a step further and TURNS YOU INTO A DOLL WHEN HE BEATS YOU AT A VIDEO GAME
Which makes me question the choice to use Daniel D'Arby and Osiris for the continue screen instead of Telence D'Arby and Atum. Telence is the one associated with video games.
Ryan Cauffman because B'arbie dresses like he actually cares about himself
Ryan Cauffman I guess it was just a......Bizarre choice.
Contiue screen should always be kakyoin with shades throwing emerald splash. End should be dios fist and his face with kakyoin punched through.
was that a jojo refrence
Too bad its impossible to pull yourself away from an arcade machine until the timer hits zero.. what if you get a free game!?
I mean you know you wont..... but what if you get a free game!!?
Andy Mcp sometimes they do! I used to play a few racers that did this and it was miserable!
Yes! Collectivise the video games!
Andy Mcp OR if a nice old man/lady happen to pass by and see your anguished face as the time ticks down and out of the kindness of their heart hands you a SHINY new quarter!!! One the best moments of my life!😆😏
I run between money booth and Arcade game...... Lot of time.
Ashchi Salleh Worst part was having some little brat come over and hit the buttons to count down the timer faster.

@Desatroyah Of destruction JoJo isn't gay.
@@dieselengineman well
@Desatroyah Of destruction shut up boomer
MATRIXuser um watch JoJo it is actually gay but it’s a good anime it’s my number 2
I always like to think of Metal Slug, where after losing all your lives, you watch as a big, loud countdown descends to zero, all the while your enemies laugh and celebrate over killing the lunatic who murdered all their friends. Thankfully, upon pumping in some credits, you respawn with a machine gun and get to watch as the enemies who thought you were dead scream in horror and dive for cover.
*GAME OVER*
*PLEASE DEPOSIT 40 QUARTERS*
What a rip!
Proceeds to deposit 40 quarters...
Bailey Alexis Snow Old school microtransactions
its especially bad when the arcade machines eat your quarters but they don't all get counted.
Please deposit 5 coins
Lol, what arcades have you been going to, 10 dollars a game?
The Simpsons LOL!!!!!
How could you miss the most harrowing game over screen in video game history, the one in Waterworld. That voice terrified me when I first heard it, and in the short time I had spent playing the game I had grown attached to my character. I gladly inserted 40 quarters into the machine, like the voice told me to, in order to save the life of the character I had grown to love.
Darbys stand makes people turn into poker chips if you lose a bet meaning you lost a bet that you were gonna win the game in jojos bizarre adventure
Actually, it doesnt turn people into poker chips. It pulls out the victim's soul and compresses it into a poker chip
"while relatively unknown in the west, jojo's bizarre adventure.."
Might need to make a redone version of this video
Can't go anywhere on the internet without seeing at least one JoJo reference
When arcades were creative as hell unlike today which is sort of rare.
There are still arcades today?
Jasper Zanovich Yes.
His question kinda illustrates why arcades are less imaginative than they once were, though.
It's because today all the creativity goes into coming up with even more ways to stuff micro-transactions into console games, so you can pay $60 for the opportunity to spend a couple hundred trying to get that one cool hat.
Arcades are only still very popular in Japan nowadays.
*take my coins arcade machines, TAKE THEM*

JakoborRazor Back then it wasnt since the anime wasnt a thing
@@KarmaHexkys What about the manga?
Meowtaro kujo Yes the manga was a thing back then but it wasnt as popular as today since anime mainly are the reasons why series been popular but sadly the jojo ova didnt make the series popular still a interesting piece
@@KarmaHexkys Ok makes sense
Meowtaro kujo Yea the jojo ps1 game is rare too it cost somewhere like 200 now luckily i have my own cop
Have you played Conquest of the crystal palace in the NES? Not only was it ahead of its time with the dog sidekick, animation and music, but it also was heartbreaking when you lost and you dangled on a rope on the continue screen as the dog was desperately barking. Great game!
Y O U D I E D.
PowahSlap Entertainmint If Dark Souls was an arcade game..... would anybody carry enough quarters to finish it?
This made me notice the disparity between the video and the thumbnail.
I didnt think they were only doing arcade. I woulf have said Resident Evil Outbreak because they show you "You Are Dead" written in blood and then they make it look like your TV got unplugged.
You agin
Your every where
My dude...Cadillacs and Dinosaurs?! Where. Was. I?
Frankly I was starting to think I imagined the whole cartoon. No one ever remembers Cadillacs and dinosaurs.
Yea, but it was my childhood lol, still play it sometimes
That game is the proof Capcom was lit in the 1990s. The game was based on a HQ about...well, Cadillacs, dinosaurs and some new source of energy. And what did Capcom do? Just rammed it all together inside an arcade cabinet and created the most emblematic beat 'em up of the decade. Cadillacs & Dinosaurs was insane, and for me will always be the best arcade game ever.
Out of ammo in your bolt-action rifle? Hell, just grab it by the nose and use the stock to crack some skulls.
You and me both. I don't remember that game at all.
The Dinosaur screams from the second game sound like they were directly ripped from a Godzilla movie. It sounds exactly like the sound when Godzilla is injured
Wow great video! The widescreen presentation really takes me back to the old days when we played arcade games on widescreen CRT monitors that didn't exist!
About Jojo: "Relatively unknown to the west?"
While in might be true back when Heritage to the Future was first released, right now I'm certain quite a lot of people (especially manga/anime fans) in the west knows what the Jojo series is
RezaMaulana98 Probably not many people outside the typical animè community, though.
If you watch/read JoJo, especially starting at Part 2 (don't skip Part 1, you need the context, and it's still decent), you'll never be able to stop obsessing over it and finding references to it in everything you see from there on.
it's probably best known for its memes, not many people in the west have actually watched / read it.
When I first tried watching part 1, I actually gave up on it. It was too over the top (and I'm a shonen fan, overall)
Part 2 gets quite a bit more bearable and then the real fun begins.
I dislike anime and even I know it...
I'm surprised Hagar was just sitting there and waiting to drown instead of, I dunno, trying to drink the water or something.
He tried, but he couldn't get out to pee - compounding the problem.
Timothy McLean drinking the water... You mean drowning lmao.
Timothy McLean so what your saying is..... he should've drunk his problem away
Timothy McLean he would’ve drowned from the water intake that way. It’s called dry drowning when too much water enters the body at one time
This is Haggar, after all. ... I wouldn't be surprised if he drank all the water, made it to the end of the game and spit it all out on the final boss.
Oh man, The Punisher. My college cafeteria had that cabinet in a corner, my buddy and I used to play the hell out of it. Player 2 was Nick Fury!
D'arby's whole deal is that if you admit defeat he can take your soul and turn it into a poker chip. He gambles with people and when they lose he can take their soul.
The biggest arcade battle for me was between my hands and my pockets for possession of my quarters. It's not like I could keep them on the machine - trying to pick them up from that surface was like ice skating down Mt. Everest while beating Dark Souls without dying in the game or in life.
Brent Dreher Good analogy. 💪👍
Damn i actually feel the same....that slope....
When I was a little kid, one of my granduncles owned an amusement park. I would run over to him for quarters, and make it back just in time to continue. xD
When I was a kid in the 80's playing arcade games, most of the machines had a gap between the glass and the control board, so if you put your quarters up there, bye bye quarters. And same with pinball machines. There were always gaps somewhere, where we'd end up losing quarters. We learned real quick not to do that anymore.
That was the best paragraph I ever read
remember kids, coins were a primitive form of currency people used before contactless payment
Unimaginative Username They are still used for bus fare.
public transport?! How common!
Depends. I can pay for bus fare with paper money or plastic as well.
Unimaginative Username *Microtransatcions*
And way to honor you opponent if you lose to them after lot of coin spending fighting them... Always make sure put one coin for one continue as sign respect they skill. And put it from they own side not you own side.
You amazing bastard! I was going to upload a video that showed what happened when you inserted money into those machines when the heroes were at their worst. I was in the arcades at EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of them. The feeling of dread at seeing it for the first time and the sheer elation of seeing the continue happening for the first time is unbelievable.
Seeing Hager or Cody or Guy's joy at knowing they will live when the knife cuts the fuse, or seeing Frank or Nick rising up from certain death to announce to their enemies that they are back and ready to fight them. Or Vice (the first level boss in Cadillacs and Dinosaurs) not only getting his face clocked, but the revolver falling out of his hand is just... amazing.
Doing that let you know that you were not out of the game. This is especially true for the Cadillacs and dinosaurs when your reentry into the game was badass by having bombs drop all over the screen that made your reappearance say 'WHAT'S UP BITCHES!'!
Tecmo Knight's continue screen traumatized me as a kid.
JoJo and outsidexbox, my two favourite things in the same video.
MUDA!!!
DO YOU... UNDERSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANDU?!!!
A fall from about a mile would probably reduce a mortal combatant's body to mush. The spikes seem to slow the impact and reduce the mushiness. Therefore, the implementation of said spikes appear to be either a nice guy's plan to give the combatant's family an open casket...or a sadistic plan to inflict one last, needlessly violent fatality...JUST PUT IN A DAMN COIN!
An accurate, if completely unnecessary, analysis. GET THOSE COINS OVER HERE!
Nope, just to make sure mortal Kombat NEVER happens again.
I'm going to kill him all with a minigun >:D
Your videos are just so well written! Hilarious as ever
"Jojo's bizarre adventure"
"Relatively unknown in the west"
Ikr
Ok, let’s see how far your Mortal Kombat character would actually fall. Let’s assume we start with a acceleration of 0. The gravity of Earth is 9.8 m/s/s. Using the time of 20 seconds and ignoring air resistance, we get a distance of 1,960 meters. That’s 1.96 kilometers or 1.21788 miles. So yeah, about a mile.
*Kombat
Lol I love how the only edit was on the word combat, errr sorry "Kombat"
How come Shaq-fu got a sequel but there's no Cadillacs and Dinosaurs 2 in 2018? It sounds way more awesome.
It didn't get a home release either back in the day, Arcade only.
Well, Road Rash got a good remake, so... grab some indie devs and get crowdfunding. I'd buy it.
It IS way more awsome in every way but you know, money talks.
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was a comic book, originally, so it was actually a licensed game. Presumably no one thinks the license is worth buying. Not to mention that "Cadillac" by itself is also a registered brand name. I'm not sure how that works, but GM would undoubtedly be getting a cut too - so that drives the price up more.
That's because Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was based off of a comic book called Xenozoic Tales, so they'd need the license for both the comic book story and for the Cadillac brand to be able to make a sequel
"While relatively unknown in the west."
Me: How high are you.
Jackson Sloss I think he meant the video game. Also, you don’t need to put “Me:” if the quote is in quotes. We know you’re the one talking because we know you didn’t say the quote.
Franken Stein Fair enough.
Jackson Sloss Jojo heritage of the future was underrated back then until the anime 2013 or whatever stardust was released started to become a thing
@@rbrachy2518 nope he was talking about the manga
Awesome II how do you know?
I remember Final Fight's end screen vividly. I really cared about Hagar. Or whatever he was called, it's been 25 years.
Incidentally, isn't Final Fight's end boss that laughing guy in a wheelchair? Seemed a little excessive to be beating him up.
Lol, when a guy runs a criminal organization or whatever that's supposed to be in Final Fight, wheelchair or not, the dude deserves all the punches!
Don't worry. He comes back as a zombie in another game, so beat away.
DistinctionDave: Yeah, but he gets up from the wheelchair halfway through the battle.
Yes. But the sequels have an almost demonic kung-fu guy and a Nazi expy, who are much more acceptable. Also, Belger is an ass because he fakes disability.
Oh god. A montage of my childhood, with narration from the outside crew. Is this some kind of bad dream? Am I going to end up at school in my underwear? No. Ms. Hornbuckle I don't wanna go to detention!!!
its funny when I was a kid I didnt understand that thats what these weird continue screens were trying to do so I never actually fell for it and paid XD
Whereas my experience with them was in the post-arcade era, and I wondered why they bothered asking. If you didn't want to play anymore, wouldn't you just quit on your own?
Makes sense you look like a moron
You never really enjoyed them then
Be nice :)
Back in my childhood my english wasn't that good and when I lost in Tekken (for the ps2) it would say Continue and I didn't know what it meant
*”while relatively unknown in the west”*
As someone who went through the
IT WAS ME, *DIO!*
When I didn’t even know what the hell it was yet and had also seen the cherry scene by then it pretty known through enemies. And now I know because of the first two episodes and I was done there was so much to process
Yeah there really is a lot to process especially with how "bizarre" jojo is. But also if you havent you should still give it a bit of a go if you're willing. At like part 3 to 4 you'll figure out wether if jojo is for you. Albeit that probably is like 70 eps
I remember that final fight count down. I played that back in the early 90's at wild water and wheels in Myrtle Beach SC one summer every day that I went to the water slides.
The Heritage for the Future game-over screen isn't that bad. It has a litttle cat running around to soften the blow.
Darby's stand steals your soul by turning it into a chip
Get yo jojo right dagnabbit
Isn't that what Osiris does
Watching this video was like facing an ancient fear of mine. Growing up I had this completely irrational and intense fear of game over screens which I didn't entirely get over until like the 8th grade, to the point where the threat of them made me just reset my console.
See? Nothing awful happened, Azzy, it's fine. :v

What about Worst/most embarrassing ways to die in video games or a specific video game?
I was absolutely not expecting anything Jojo on outsidexbox, but here we are! two of my favorite things intersecting beautifully.
Thanks for the old school content. Being a geezer myself it's a fun trip down memory lane.
If they were as money hungry as modern developers, they would have let you pay coins for lootboxes. "Random" lootboxes that drop mostly things that the character you've chosen can't use.
I think Double Dragon 3 let you pay extra real world money into the machine to buy more moves and weapons.
Back in the era, continues were actually considered a *feature* because it saved you the time of having to replay the whole game again just to get back to where you died (especially for longer-form arcade games with progression through discrete levels, e.g. beat-em-ups). Some games even gave you a free bonus (powerup, etc.) with that continue.
... Which, when you think about it, doesn't really sound much different from modern microtransactions.

Nice vid, earned a sub :D
Ha, I remember the Final Fight and Ninja Gaiden/Shadow Warrior ones in the arcades on holiday. I was like 8 or 9 at the time and thought they were cool.
and Final Fight 3's continue was actually an homage to Ninja Gaiden's continue, and even the music pays homage to NG's game over sting.
While its not an arcade game (I think), Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow's Game Over screen messed me up as a kid. How am I supposed to cope with the idea that my failure got Donald Duck (since Donald was acting as Maui Mallard) *dragged off to hell*. Sure, hitting continue had him break out, but you only had so many continues!
The continue screen from the arcade Ninja Gaiden is absolutely haunting. It is just so visceral in a way that even the Final Fight continue screen can't match.
*Gets killed by saw blade*
"Oooooh!"
Surprised he didn't go like "Ooooooh ow ouch ok that was a bad one you guys"
Also, JOJO!!!
D'Arby isn't a minor character he's a turning point in the Manga. The screen also makes sense in terms of his stand.
"He did ninja stuff"
"Like fighting jasons"
Jojo unknown in the West? That’s the biggest amount of misinformation I have ever heard. If I was to go out on the street and scream “DIO”, I would at least get one person scream back “JOJO” which would be accompanied by an actual stand off.
haha it definitely wouldn’t :p
outsidexbox Correct. What you need to do is shout "SONO CHI NO SADAME" to which you'd get the reply of "JOOOOOOOOOJO!"
"If I was to go out on the street and scream “DIO”, I would at least get one person scream back “JOJO”" I think you'd be more likely to to have someone throw the horns up at you & start singing Holy Diver.
Had no idea what the reference was, but i love Dio, he is one of the best male singer/vocalists to ever do it. But I still have 0 idea of what you are talking about
BOI. If only that happened... If i did that I would have a LOT of people staring at me confused af.
I remember there was one game in my childhood with the gameover screen so scary it made me run away. I have an app or program in a disc install to my pc which have about 322 arcade games. Maybe it was Ninja Gaiden but scared the shit out of me
If it weren't for the arcade aspect id say some in the arkham games
Mortal kombat 4 scared the shit out of me back in the day lol
Oh yes, continue screens like Tecmo Knight and Ninja Gaiden were perfect nightmare fuel when I was young. One of the reasons I had to get good at video games. Never wanted to see screens like that ever. Also explains why most of my nightmares are arcade games with SUPER IMPOSSIBLE difficulty.
amazing. great video!
Good i remember when i working as a mail boy to get money to finish Final fight 1

Good job on the video, I liked what I witnessed.
Why does this video feels like Andy was stuck in a arcade room as a kid.
And why couldn't we ALL have been so lucky?
03:25 how come he shoots you 7 times with a revolver?
It's good to see videos like these,it reminds us what happens if we lost. 😅
In this day and age we don't know it anymore,if we lose now we just try again and use/find extra health or find a better weapon
The harshest death I’ve seen is your characters body parts fall apart while your characters screaming “OOF”
i punched an arcade machine once. sob gave me an f.u. screen and sprouted arms and legs. luckily it went to the storm trooper school of shooting and i was a graduate from the Prometheus school of running away.

"relatively unknown"
😂😂😂
(I rarely use emoji, but for once I think they'll get the point across)
You forgot to mention the game over screen from Toki ( an arcade, walk n gun platformer about a Tarzen wannabe named Toki gets transformed into a fire breathing ape (resembles a chimpanzee or an Australopithcus) and must rescue Princess Miho from an evil wizard) in which the continue screen features the Princess on a demonic golden camera, begging you to insert more quarters or else she'll get killed by the evil wizard and his gang of prehistoric monsters and mutants. To make things more tedious, you only get a limit amount of continues with the last one stating "this is your last chance! Good luck! You're gonna need it!". After you fail your last turn, the game insults you with this message, "You have failed your quest! The Princess will forever remain captured!" It's not as cruel or violent as the game over screens on this list, but it's pretty harsh (especially considering Toki is a sadistically hard arcade game with its multiple cheap shots and sluggish controls).
great video bro
