  • Some may look askance when Sarah Nurul Ain Ismail, 18, talks to herself as she goes about her tasks. READ MORE: str.sg/w2nR
“Sarah, take off your apron. Fold it and put it in your bag, don’t forget. It’s important,” she says quietly as she follows a checklist of tasks to do before she finishes her shift at Swensen’s in Sun Plaza in Sembawang.
The repeated sentences serve as reminders and are a coping mechanism for the many thoughts in her mind, said her eldest sister Nurul Jannah Ismail, 28, an assistant editor and producer.
Sarah has autism spectrum disorder - a developmental disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact.

Tell her if she feels like talking to herself to hold her phone and people will think she's talking to someone on the phone.

Sarah seem to be very open to routine at work or even at home. But ik that she don’t get the point what is the future about like how is she going to take care of herself and know what is the living. But overall she is doing well. For those people think that autism people is not smart, you are looking at the wrong side

Dont scare her about the future and mommy gone, let them be in their own world…they will cope in time but challenging them now might give them a breakdown
