  • This is lesson no. 1 for learning clawhammer (or frailing) banjo. These lessons take it super slow, so in this video, I just cover basic right hand stuff. I go through proper sitting posture, hand position, down stroke/down brsh, and thumb pluck.
The aim here is just to get used to hitting the strings with your fingers/fingernails, and how to pluck the high G string with our thumb. Take your time with these exercises before moving on.
Slow can be boring, but it is effective!

I have just started claw hammer. Never played banjo before and have struggled with some other teaching videos . Having short tubby fingers, just the claw hammer shape can be tricky, but your comment that everybody’s different helped a lot. I am now starting from scratch with your video, keeping the strum-thumb as two movements it’s starting to click! Thanks for the advice.

Thanks so much for watching John, and thanks for your very kind comment!
Glad to be of help - these videos (and the ones that will be coming out soon!) are meant for people just starting off, or struggling in some way, so it's great that you found it useful :)

I'm a more advanced player but this is really good, I'll be sure to recommend this to anyone starting out!

      Thanks!
Yes, it's super basic - every time I get a new student I hear how CZcams videos go too fast for them, so I thought I'd make some videos that go super slow!
      Thanks for your comment!
