    In undergraduate counterpoint, I studied this work as an example of chorale embellishment. Bach's inventiveness continues to stun me. Why are those leaps in the string writing also so much fun to sing? How marvelous his varieties in texture and dance rhythm. This performance stands out for many reasons, not least the ACTIVE LISTENING evident in the video. How lucky we are!

    Vocally instrumentally and in terms of counterpoint this cantata is remarkable. The Alto aria with the violIn in particular. The duet that follows is a testament to Bach's skills at counterpoint. The next movement has a tenor with cello and a trumpet playing the chorale melody.

    Bach arranged this piece based on a hymn by a German hymn writer Joachim Neander. The hymn in English is called Praise to the Lord Almighty. You will hear the theme came our quite clear at the last movement. Sadly not a lot of churches in India sing this song, even in the Baptist North East hardly anybody knows this song, except may be at more sophisticated institution like Patkai Christian College.

    Just for clarification: Yes, six movement from Bach's cantatas were arranged for solo organ. These are called "Schübler Chorales" after the arranger, who was a student of Bach. These arrangements were approved ( possibly corrected) and published by the composer and since than favorite pieces for organists and music lovers.
    The second aria of Cantata #137 is #6 of the Schübler Chorales.

    Cantata for the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity
    1. Chor
    Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren,
    Meine geliebete Seele, das ist mein Begehren.
    Kommet zu Hauf,
    Psalter und Harfen, wacht auf!
    Lasset die Musicam hören.
    1. Chorus
    Praise the Lord, the mighty King of honor,
    my beloved soul, this is my desire.
    Come join the crowd,
    psaltery and harps, awake!
    Let the music be heard.
    2. Arie A
    Lobe den Herren, der alles so herrlich regieret,
    Der dich auf Adelers Fittichen sicher geführet,
    Der dich erhält,
    Wie es dir selber gefällt;
    Hast du nicht dieses verspüret?
    2. Aria A
    Praise the Lord, who directs everything so gloriously,
    who leads you surely upon eagle's wings,
    who sustains you
    as it pleases you yourself;
    have you not sensed this?
    3. Arie (Duett) S B
    Lobe den Herren, der künstlich und fein dich bereitet,
    Der die Gesundheit verliehen, dich freundlich geleitet;
    In wieviel Not
    Hat nicht der gnädige Gott
    Über die Flügel gebreitet!
    3. Aria (Duet) S B
    Praise the Lord, who prepares you wisely and well,
    who bestows health, and accompanies you as a friend;
    in how much suffering
    has not the gracious God spread
    His wings over you!
    4. Arie (mit instr. Choral) T
    Lobe den Herren, der deinen Stand sichtbar gesegnet,
    Der aus dem Himmel mit Strömen der Liebe geregnet;
    Denke dran,
    Was der Allmächtige kann,
    Der die mit Liebe begegnet.
    4. Aria (with instr. Choral) T
    Praise the Lord, who surely blesses your condition,
    who from heaven rains down streams of love;
    consider this,
    what the Almighty can do,
    who comes to meet you with love.
    5. Choral
    Lobe den Herren, was in mir ist, lobe den Namen!
    Alles, was Odem hat, lobe mit Abrahams Samen!
    Er ist dein Licht,
    Seele, vergiß es ja nicht;
    Lobende, schließe mit Amen!
    5. Chorale
    Praise the Lord, what is within me, praise His name!
    Everything that has breath, praise with Abraham's heirs!
    He is Your light,
    soul, do not forget it;
    praising, conclude with Amen!

      @@shin-i-chikozima I live in the country and am encouraging people to return to farming and self-reliance. The cities are decrepit and devoid of life or character. Our country has been spiritually sick for a long time. In fact the whole world is sick. Ironically, this virus might actually be the cure that brings people and communities together once again. People are atomized and alienated from one another. Our leaders prefer it that way because they have don't want the populace collectivizing against them. Globalism is a failed experiment. It earns cheap votes for the communists and cheap labor for the capitalists. One can only hope that our nations return to some semblance of autonomy.

    The solo trumpet part during the bass aria calls for notes outside of the harmonic series. With an authentic trumpet, the player has to "bend" the notes.

    Ich höre da recht viel in letzter Zeit - Corelli, Pachelbel, Händel - Bach scheint mir das alles zusammengesammelt zu haben und die richtige Musik daraus gemacht zu haben.

    I like the subtle differences in the the way you do the first verse entries, same music, but the first time, I feel like your tempo is a tiny bit faster and the playing is a bit more hands on on the beats. The second time around you do slightly softer agogics, it's even more solemn than the first time. Very beautifully done, incredible musicianship.
