    I feel like Hololens would be a nicer to use around your home.
    VR is more of a: "You're in one area, but transported to a new world" type thing.
    AR just seems like a really fun way to be comfortable at home.

      Augmented reality in its current form is already quite amazing and useful, especially in enterprise. I think that once Apple releases their headset people's perception of augmented reality is going to change as they will expect it to be available in everyday situations everywhere. I own both the magic leap and the hololens 2 and they are amazing headsets, but they don't work in direct sunlight, I expect Apple will deal with that issue.

    For a digital nomad, this (after some improvements) would allow to travel with so much more screen estate. And also the same way we use our phones for everything while traveling, I expect the future versions of these to be really useful for making photos/videos, recognizing top tourist attractions and showing small (i) icons next to them that I can click and see detailed info about their history, with even a digital reconstruction overlay for ruins etc, and similar stuff for cafes and accommodation. Realtime translated texts when in a foreign language environment, but maybe even subtitles for people speaking other languages. This definitely will be revolutionary some days, and will be normalized (as cellphones have been, even though at first everybody hated those annoying people who had one). It's just impossible to tell if we are 1 year from it or 10.

  • @rtyzxc
    @rtyzxc Před 3 lety +7

    I can see the potential, but for business they need
    - functional and useful applications
    - processing power to do real work. One way to do this would be seamlessly offloading processing to computers and stream the data into the headset. The only things that really need to be done in the headset is hand interactions and rendering.
    For consumer, lower end hardware will work fine, but, more importance should be put to form factor.

  • @alexfoxleigh9443
    @alexfoxleigh9443 Před 3 lety +20

    For me, the primary use case would be a screen replacement. I'd no longer need a phone or a bank of computer monitors or a TV/projector, I'd just have the headset. That would be extremely powerful for me.

    I think the strength of that particular XR device, will be and remain as simple, lightweight apps only. Things like notepads, light web browsing, a calculator, perhaps a photogrametic measuring app for finding rough dimensions of objects. Probably some things we use smartphones for as well, like calls. A holopresence application might be possible with additional setup of equipment, but would be better handled by VR.
    I don't think you're going to get as big an improvement to processing power, as soon as you hope from something that size. The size will need to increase. I think the Hololens would work better as a peripheral to a powerful smartphone, so that it could offload most of the processing to the smartphone. It would probably be best to have a wired connection between the two, the free up Bluetooth bandwidth for other accessories. And because you'll need to keep your phone on your person at all times to use the glasses.
    I think a bulkier XR headset would be the way to go, in order to get heavier apps to work. I'm sure some rich business types would balk at the idea of wearing bulky glasses. But there may be a way to make them stylish with the right designer. And if they make sure that they're the absolute best performance XR glasses, it should hopefully create a trend where none existed before.
    By the way, I'm assuming that these will be marketed toward businesses long before consumers. So it's the businesses Microsoft will need to convince.

  • @stumpyschof
    @stumpyschof Před 3 lety +1

    The Hololens, when you was recording were you saving it locally or recording the screen capture from the device manager on your PC? the dev tools from connecting with your IP allows for a lot of information to be seen and smoother for recording.
    Some people commenting about manipulation and other elements based on learning there are already companies who have worked on all these things themselves but usually, as their own applications it's a cool piece of tech for sure but the headset itself has some limitations but fun to develop for.
    Nice to see people showing it off a little.

    I think the keys to make this a commercial device would be weight & battery life. I like my Quest but even with the elite strap it's not really comfortable to use for long periods, and for AR you'll ideally want it to be as transparent as possible. Having it weight down on your face or having it constantly run out of battery would be a deal breaker there, not just an inconvenience.

    I was going to mention the hands being occluded by the apps but you covered that at the end of the video. Instead of rendering virtual hands though you could just not render the parts of the app window where your hands should be. It can do this for 3d objects and walls, so should be possible for hands too.

  • @levoGAMES
    @levoGAMES Před 3 lety

    I predict that it'll take about 10 years until we are starting to see first mainstream application of AR functionality in public in major cities. Like shops displaying virtual product scans for AR customers. It'll take quite some time until it's perceived as normal. Even today we don't have that many screen/touch screens for similar purposes like ordering kiosks in dining locations. A core requirement is a standard framework that unifies devices, scans & creations across platforms and networks. Personalized ads etc would require a single cross platform avatar/account. I personally would love to see something like an AR navigation HUD and connecting your phone to AR.

    This is starting to look more and more functional, but I'm still thinking we're a couple iterations away from AR appealing to consumers as a product they're actually go out and buy. So far the applications are little more than tech demos. Even Spatial looks like a tech demo more than an actually functional workspace. I think the number one thing that needs to improve is the latency from your inputs. It's getting close, but it isn't there yet. It needs to be imperceptible if people are going to USE the device rather than just try it out.
    What AR is going to need is a killer app. It's not going to be floating holograms you place around your house, or even a virtual space for work meetings, though that latter one is getting much closer to the actual value of the device. I can actually see board gamers virtually meeting around a "shared" table winning over a lot of people - but can that compete with playing in a virtual sandbox with others? VR just seems more exciting, even if AR does have some very unique functions.
    I'm actually curious to see an AR/VR hybrid that essentially has a second-headset you slide over the AR glasses to block out the world, and maybe give it some extra power.

    I was just blown away when I thought I could plot myself in a game environment just like VR except with AR so you still see parts of a room like keyboard and mouse. This would duplicate the experience by a projection overlay just like a projector adapting the background for a screen. So you would have screens and sprites over and over again until immersion into where there is nothing left of reality, professionally developed by a game publisher the same way progress has been made from 2D era to immersive results.

    Quick Question, is the Hand tracking on Hololens 2 better than Oculus Quest 2, similiar, or different?

    • @KalaniMakutu
      @KalaniMakutu Před 3 lety

      Infinitely better. The Hololens 2 supplements the IR cameras with Time of Flight LIDAR cameras that measure the position of your hands with sub-millimeter accuracy, and are tracking a dedicated “hands” field of view” in addition to the surrounding area LIDAR, IR, and RGB cameras. In addition, the Hololens incorporates iris tracking where you can do all these “click, move, and scroll” actions entirely with your eye movements - something that no other device presently offers.
      But, the Hololens is 10x the price of the Oculus Quest 2, and almost double that of the Magic Leap One which is its nearest competitor.
      Also, a lot of the lag seen in this video was because none of the updates were installed, instead running on the initial release firmware, combined with the number of holograms present in the scene. Those have improved significantly over the past year.

    Do the holograms appear to bounce when you're in AR? Or is the bouncing just in the video?

    Hi, thnx for the video. Can it replace 20+ screens for trading? ( To use it instead investing in 6 screens with 4 charts per screen )

      As I understand from the video, the screens are currently slow, but one day something like this will definitely replace monitors.

    How portable is this? I am a truck driver, and I think if you could put a sat navigation app on this, it would sell like hot cakes.
