that guitar melody makes me weep internally. vini was an absolute master at his craft, of subtly but sensibly conveying emotion through his guitar, and his tone was just so genuinely wonderful. and mitchell’s drumming too is genius, in how minimalistic and spacious, yet simple and groovy it is... gosh i love this band. riveting, magical stuff!

@@artemiizaytsev I can tell you that while it's hard to find, it's not so much a novelization of 24 Hour Party People as Tony Wilson's take on the whole experience. As he loved Vini to pieces, there's probably some great tidbits in there.

In the 80s a dear old friend, sadly no longer with us, gave me a tape of an album which included this. None of us had any idea who it was by but we all loved it. About a dozen years ago, I discovered quite by accident The Durutti Column and a 30-year mystery was solved. Bravo Vini, what a beautiful composition and thanks for intriguing me for many years! :-)

It's a warm summer evening, I'm lying outside in a field. There's a slight breeze, waves crashing nearby, and the smell of citrus trees. I take another sip of wine, a puff of a joint, look around at my friends doing the same, then look back at the stars. And I feel gloriously wonderful and alone all at the same time.
That is where I am every time I hear this song.

Took me a while to learn, but you just have to get used to 7th chord shapes and using your thumb as bass (you could of course loop the bass part and just play lead, but that's kinda cheating) I'd recommend learning basic jazz stuff first (major seventh, 5th intervals, etc) to get a deeper understanding of why the song actually works and has that feel

Morrissey was a fool to do only one album with him. Viva Hate is the only Morrissey album fully as good as The Smiths. He had some good songs after that still, but he never achieved those heights again. Johnny Marr is one of my favorite guitar players, but Vini is a real original and at the same level. He's one of these players where after 2 seconds you know it's him.
