  • How To Make Wood Ocarina - Hand Tools / Woodwind
    Welcome back for another Smoky Earth Skills
    Crafting a wooden Ocarina from scratch in the wilderness with only hand tools. I search for the perfect wood, something with color and not too dense for carving. Pin Cherry seems to be ideal for what I'm going for. I cut out my Ocarina blank, cut and craft a working table for using the gouge.
    I start to gouge the inner chambers of each half. It is important to be careful when gouging the chamber to not break through the other side, 1/4" - 1/2" wall thickness is ideal. After you have your chambers complete, you can now move on to the windway and sound hole. The windway depth should be close to 1/16", leave a 1/4" of surface area between the lip and the chamber. That area between the lip and chamber should be less of a depth than the rest of the windway, in order for the lip to cut the air. Start your sound hole before getting too far with the windway, it is okay to work back and forth on these two parts. The two halves need to be completely flat in order to be able to test it and for it to make sound.
    Tuning is done by starting with your first finger hole and moving up one hole at a time, make sure it goes up one whole note before moving to the next hole. Going back to tweak the hole size after finishing is helpful. I oil my Ocarinas with Preserve, a nice exotic nut oil blend.
    Please enjoy, relax, subscribe and share for more Smoky Earth Skills.

    Hi, i Try to make a ocarina but i don't understand how the windway is make, i try different method but no one works. You maybe can help me

    • @sammysmokies
      @sammysmokies  Před 4 lety +5

      The windway depth needs to be around 1/16th". The sound hole needs to be as wide as the windway and on the edge of the chamber, it's necessary to have a little windway between chamber and sound hole. To produce sound, the sound hole angle should be less than 45 degrees. Also, any of the smallest pieces of wood splinters in the entire windway (and chamber some) will greatly interfere with sound. Hope this helps, ask me something specific if you still have trouble. My Website should be up soon with plenty of Ocarinas and more for sale.
      - Thanks

      @@sammysmokies The problem is the windway, and i think more precisely the soundhole. Everytime when I breath in the ocarine, it's just a air noise

    Dude this was awesome! How long did it take you to make and do you have perfect pitch or did you tune it once you got home? One more thing do you make ocarina professionally or do you just make them as a hobby?

    • @sammysmokies
      @sammysmokies  Před 4 lety +6

      Thank you. Only takes one day to make one, whatever size or shape. I tune by ear, usually starting at the first note, or by....do, re, me, fa, sol, la, tee, do. There are helpful tuning apps out there. Each hole drilled should be one whole note higher. It is a hobby, but I would be happy to make one for you. I encourage you to try and I am here if you need help.

      Smoky Earth Skills ya I’m going to try to make a soprano one tomorrow. Have you tried to ever use clay to make one or do you prefer wood?

    • @sammysmokies
      @sammysmokies  Před 4 lety +5

      @@sammyboy1236 Great. I have never tried to make one out of clay. I like wood because it is more durable and some species can be really beautiful after sanding and oil. Just let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

    • @sammyboy1236
      @sammyboy1236 Před 4 lety +3

      Smoky Earth Skills my only problem with wood ocarinas is that (from what I have heard) you can’t tune them as well because if you take off to much wood then you can’t fix it. But besides that wood is way better because of it’s clear tone. What are your thoughts on the wood vs clay?

    • @sammysmokies
      @sammysmokies  Před 4 lety +3

      @@sammyboy1236 The camber size does matter, so take note how big or small the two halves are before you put them together. Most of the time you should land right on a full note or half note. The key is make more than one. Wood all the way if you have the tools.
