This is my first time watching BB. I've been following the LPL for quite a while now. I must say, BB really explains this lock function very well. Thank you, BB!
It's literally the same for me, it's my first BB video and I'm going to stay on the channel
Now that he's retired from CZcams, might want to give all his vids a watch, since there not like be many more if at all.
@@TesserId I hope after a few years he comes back and we can see if he can still pick lol.
A year from your comment and the exact same for me. Too bad he's not making content anymore but I truly hope he enjoys his retirement
My thoughts exactly.
Very generous of you and LPL to get this to market for the benefit of the hobby. Thank you.
Yeah and to the dismay of million s of bike owners. Releasing this just armed thousands of junkie bike thieves.
@@TheAlexdx7 Junkie bike thieves are going to spend 45USD and hours of learning to pick a lock rather than just steal a hacksaw?
You must not know a lot of junkie bike thieves.
sddfagfdsfg There is an upper limit to the security needed too. As soon as the tool needed to open/cut a lock is expensive enough that it can be sold for a hit of drugs, it will be. If a thief gets their hands on a good tool, they might steal a couple of bikes, but the tool will be off the streets before long.
😂😂😂 since when, stealing sh¡t is a hobby?
I started watching just because I thought it was interesting. I kept watching and I started wanting to do this for a hobby also. It just looks interesting to be able to pick different locks for fun.
This pick's name should be
"The pick bosnian bill and i made"
TPBBAIM :)
@@phalcon23 Simply pronounced "The Baim pick"
@@avinotion The BB-Aim pick
@@avienated just pronunciation, not actual name.
Anyway, Sparrows released it, and simply called it the Disc Pick. And it's been out of stock for quite a while now, so I don't think they'll be making any more of them.
@@avinotion I know mate, I just suggested a different pronounciation (bebe-aim). That's what I'd call it.
I never understood how the tensioning worked on a disc detainer. The scales have fallen from my eyes! lol
#metoo
same. light bulb for me.
Yeah, I didn't either- now I understand that it's pick a disk- hope you're putting tension on the right one.
@@junkman8742 the #metoo movement is a movement against sexual assault of women. the # sign is still called the pound sign in many countries. They called their anti-rape movement pound me too....
Soviet Russia sounds consensual, so no problem
This… This was the video that allowed me to finally “get” disc detainer locks.
Thank you for your incredible contribution to the locksport community, Bill.
Enjoy your well-deserved retirement.
Nice, now I understand why there is just one specific disc with maximum cut for tensioning. Thanks.
Yes, and on some locks it's in a random location (not top or bottom) making it very tricky but still doable.
Is there a general way to identify the tensioning disc? Or do you have to brute force and handle every disc as potential tensioning disc until you find the right one?
@@rainerminusunfug My two cents- What I do is simply try front first, if nothing is trying to set I try rear, usually one of them will get you all set or to the point when you can find the zero cut and counter rotate front or or rear disc.
Thx for the reply. So I guess if you are not tensioning the right disc (and thus the core), there is not enough pressure from the sidebar on the other discs, so no disc would _noticeable_ fall into it's gate? And the tensioning disc is always a zero cut because the peg has to make it to the far right and bind the core?
Haven't picket this lock type yet. So far, I'm just admiring and trying to understand them properly. :)
@@rainerminusunfug You just start tensioning from the first disc and feel the gates in other discs. When you find a gate with zero cut, that's the disc you tension to set the first disc. If you have a better made lock with actual false gates, then you need to start guessing. However, often the false gates are narrower and you can feel the difference without testing any other gates.
The pick was sold out in about two hours. There's a new batch in production.
its also now 1,000,000 dollars on their site XD
@@Enderbro3300 Depending on what you might find behind that lock, could be a good investment :)
With covid, they're late in production, and the second batch is still not available yet 😔
@@Enderbro3300 , that's just to prevent people from adding it to cart to reserve it.
It's available again everyone! I just ordered mine
Bill, thank you! I had no idea how a DD lock worked. Ten minutes and fifty two seconds later, I got it. Very much appreciated.
Hearing Bills voice brought back so many memories,
Best explanation of disc detainer I've seen. Thank you!
Thanks Bosnian Bill for explaining all that you do.
I can't wait for "The pick Bosnianbill and LockPickingLawyer made" Version 2.0 where it has 3 telescoping parts for tension disks in the middle of the lock.
9:24. I finally understand what you and LPL have been doing inside those disc locks with your special tool.
Great visual! I am not surprised these are getting more common, it's a simple effective design with less parts, lower manufacturing complexity. Hopefully these replace those dreadful cheap wafer locks on consumer goods someday...
In fact they look they are amazingly easy to produce.
In Finland they're everywhere
and have been almost 100 years :D
@@a544jh It's also common in Post Soviet countries like Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and maybe some others
Those cheap locks with soft metals are really easy to manufacture and you could add false gates with zero additional cost which makes me wonder why the cheapest locks are having no false gates. The locks that Abloy makes have higher quality meaning the whole lock body is hardened steel and at least the first disc is also hardened steel and usually lacks the nibble to allow it fully rotate creating a drilling shield, too. Those locks tension from the last disc instead.
Happy retirement Bill. Take care of yourself and your family. All the best to you.
Enjoy every moment!
Bill, you've made some extremely good content over the years, especially your educational content. Stuff like this is gold, and this is up there with your best. Very clear explanation, you are awesome.
This is the best explanation of how disk detainer locks work that I've seen. Thanks Bill.
Thank you so much for this video. I've always wondered what you were talking about as you picked it because I never understood what was going on inside. Really great video.
Happy retirement Bill thanks for all the years of information!
You will certainly be missed from the picking community, and I will miss the educational and entertaining videos which you presented. Best wishes from Birmingham (Al)
This is such an awesome video explaining the awesome elements of disc designing. Thanks Bill, this truly helped me improve my knowledge of DD locks and picks.
Thanks for all your videos. Enjoy your family time now.
Thoroughly enjoyable, live the information you offer and the manner in which you present. Truly a credit to your craft, thanks Bill
Thanks for the in-depth explanation, can't wait to grab this pick and start tackling these!
Bill is amazing. I am glad he is taking down time. It is well deserved.
This is the absolute best break down on operations, vulnerability, and make up of a disc detainer lock. Absolutely incredible.
P.s. Bill, if you permanently retire please know that you have helped so many people, as well as entertained. Your content is a very happy mix of both. Thank you for all your knowledge and years of dedication to both the industry and the art. God bless you and your family, sir.
That has to be your best ever video Bill. Just so informative and interesting.
I can't wait to buy the sparrows disc detainer pick that you and LPL designed.
Huge gratitude for sharing such a thorough information. All the best and happy retirement!
Thank you for your consistently clear instruction. You are a great teacher, sir! I, like many, look forward to the release of the DD pick!
Very thorough explanation Bill, always appreciate the time you take to break things down 👍🏻
Bill, you did an outstanding job explaining how this type of lock works. I'm not sure if you could also explain the difference in feelings of true gates vs false gate picking.
Agreed!
Soon we will make millions of you. Thanks for making us richer
amazing how a look inside it combined with your explanations makes it seem so simple to understand. Thank you very much!
Lots of videos on picking but this level of details in very appreciated and very understandable. Thnks 👍
For those griping about how long it has taken for Sparrows to release this one very specialized tool, for a rather small consumer group.
Sure, there are many of us anxiously awaiting the chance to get one of these picks. Sure, it could've been a faster process if Sparrows didn't manufacture ANY OTHER PRODUCTS! But unfortunately, the equipment & facilities aren't just sitting there waiting to make the components for & assemble this one specific item. Other (& often more profitable) products are being made/assembled every day on those machines & in those facilities & it takes time to get all the necessary supplies for a production run on this type of item. Most consumers won't ever see how much is actually involved in getting all the machine tooling, correct adjustments, material sourcing, & overall logistics required for producing a product beyond the PROTOTYPE phase. I won't even get in to the vast amounts of time, resources, & man hours involved just in quality assurance aspects of a product before it reaches the consumer. Ultimately, the longer it takes to get all the important details right & establish a cost effective production process, the better the product will be, at a reasonable price point for consumers.
While i get your point about the most people have no idea part, i’m just gonna have to come out and say it: I’m massively disappointed in what was supposed to be a big reveal. I was so excited when i first saw bb n lpl’s version, what a beauty! But as someone who has produced comparable products, i think sparrows really sold out. And i feel bad for bb and lpl because of it. They asked for if to be affordable. But what it came out to be is cheap...
The sparrows one is literally the same as the fucking 57cent, well known china one, except it has the depth lines, which probably cost as much to produce as taking them out of the chuck...
I mean just look at the difference of their prototype to the final version...quod erat demonstrandum......
And i’m saying this as someone who has owned that china pick as well as a scandinavian disc detainer pick made by a machinist for a few hundred euros.
I don’t rly want to involve bb, since he had only the best interest, but even he seems to have noticed the lack in quality, with him talking about how careful to be. Any pick needs to be handled with care but quite frankly this video seems to be preventing a shitstorm due to fragility, issues with which the stainless and even brass version i bet didnt’t have to deal with.
I honestly was so ready to love this pick, but in my eyes its the same as the previous cheapo version, just in a nicer packaging.
A pot metal pick for pot metal locks...
Anyway, much love, and keep up the good work!
I wish somebody went to Sparrows factory with a camera and made a CZcams video or two about it!
Found the sparrow employee
Great and very clear explanation, simpler in design than I thought.
Finally an explanation of how these locks work. Thank you. Found this video very interesting.
Heard that you're retiring. Shame to see you go but I understand your reasons. Thanks for all the helpful advice and tips you've provided over the years and wishing you all the best for the future.
Love this cut out of a disc detainer lock and the inner workings as it's helped understand more about what happens inside and how the exploits work.
Ive been looking for a while how these locks work and havent found in a way i actually understand. Thank you so much
Fantastic video, Bill! This one really makes it easy to understand, especially for those of us who have a hard time translating a 2d drawing into 3d reality!
This was an awesome video, Bill. I really appreciate the explanation of the mechanics of the lock. I would love to see more like this.
Enjoy your retirement sir! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge over the years.
That cleared a *lot* of questions from my head. Thank you, sir!
This was a fantastic video explaining how disc detainer locks work! I would love to see similar videos for other types of locks.
Thanks for all the info Bill, now I'm fully qualified to pick it when your new Sparrows pick comes out.😃👍👍👍
This has completely changed my understanding of these locks. Thank you.
The original Abloy (patent in 1919) has key cuts only at one edge and the key shaft is a semi circle. The key can only be removed when it is turned fully back. Typically furthest (i.e deepest in the lock) cut is full 90 degrees and serves the purpose of pulling the door open from the key. Handy, if your other hand is occupied carrying your groceries or whatever. This of course is a desired feature if the door open outwards, as it does in many countries.
Thanks for all the many explainer videos! You are a legend and always kept things on the simpler side for us new members of the locksport community. Have a happy retirement!
Bill, you're a CZcams treasure. The lock sport world benefits greatly from your videos.
Miss u Bill have a good time relaxing.
Congratulations on your retirement Bill! Thanks for everything you’ve taught us!
This video is amazing. Very informative, very illustrative. You should be proud of this one.
Thank you so much BB... this really helped me to understand how disk detainer locks work.
Very nice explanation. I have learned so much from you and LPL the last couple years I been able to not only make tools but get pretty good at picking these locks. I found that using silver solder is excellent. I am still amazed at the strength of that stuff. Thank you Bill
Great video! Very informative and no fluff or rattling on. Well done.
Best explanation of disc detainer I’ve seen, thanks Bill 👍🏼
That was a great lesson. Very cool to see how the lock works and how the pick is used.
Thanks for taking us to disc detainer school! That was incredibly informative, great for someone like me who hasn't attacked these yet. 😀👍
This was the first video that I ever watched of yours, and this was just so incredibly enlightening! COVID gave me the time to pick up the hobby, but to keep it simple, I stuck to pin tumblers.
I've heard about your retirement, and want to wish you the very best! While I'll miss new content from you, I'm much happier knowing you're following your heart on the decision!
I've just picked up a disc detainer trainer lock, my very own sparrows pick, so I'm going to celebrate your retirement by finally picking up a new facet to this wonderful hobby! Manual meditation for mechanically minded fidgeters!
Lots of love to you, the whole community and best wishes!!
Hi Bill, that was a really clear and informative explanation of how these locks work and how to pick them. I appreciate the time you took in the preparation and the cracking video. Cheers 🍻
Nobody else had Bills perfect delivery of what he's doing and what's happening with the lock.
I miss Bill!
Fantastic video. Thanks for taking the time to machine the lock and explain the type.
I love videos like this that explain well. Too many videos do as if we already knew.
Thanks Bill. This was very helpful in understanding how these locks work.
Fantastic video showing and explaining how this type of lock works!
Thank you for all the wisdom. Enjoy your retirement!
Finally pulled the trigger on one of these! Can’t wait to try it out
Just got mine finally super happy with it what a great design
Great explanation, I've always asked myself how these types of locks work. Thank you!
Great, great, great video! Truly helps with understanding. Thank you, BB!
Thank you Bosnianbill for the detailed explanation of how disc detainer work! LPL specifically mentioned about novices (me) possibly breaking the pick easily but your video will definitely help to prevent that from happening. Hope Sparrows will have the pick back in stock soon.
This was an excellent runthrough for someone like me who isn't very mechanically inclined. The cutaways were excellent and you made the mechanism seem really simple. Very cool!
Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. They provide invaluable knowledge.
Wow! Great explanation, I did not get the extreme weather thing. Very valuable from a practical standpoint. Thank You!
Fantastic break-down and explanation, Bill. Thanks.
Very helpful video, Thanks! I saw you and LPL picking those a lot but never knew how they worked.
Thank you for all your amazing content and knowledge.
Very good explanation, nice visuals and perfect pacing.
I'd read about the design of disc detainers before, but I never understood them until I saw this video. Thanks!
Just getting into puzzle-picking for fun. Thanks for the video. Going to start with pin tumbler but may soon expand to disc as well. Really cool plugs, these.
You are a great teacher Bill, thanks for this!
Just took apart n old disc style combination lock, its neat this popped ip today!
I had a good idea how the inside of a disc detainer worked. It turns out I was basically right, but you have just taught me SOO much more
Well done on explaining this in so much detail
Excellent! Thanks so much for that clear demonstration and explanation.
I have been wondering for a long time how one of these locks work, and now I know! Thanks BosnianBill, and enjoy your retirement!
I tried to find a video to explain just this when I got the sparrow disk detainer lock pick in the mail today. This video was very helpful in my opinion so thank you!
Cool video . It's the first video i see how well explain the disc detainer locks. well done sir. now I understand better the operation
Thank you for all of your informative and thoughtful videos, enjoy your retirement Bill!!
Great video Bill! You answered a few questions I had! Thanks!!
Thanks for having the machinery and tools for making these cutaways to use as training.👍👍👍👍👍🔑🔐🔒🔓🍺🍺
This is really amazing. Thanks for the education!
Cheers Bill, just the video I was looking for
Very educative! Thanks a lot for taking the time explaining the mechanism; I always wondered about that...
Keep up the great work, good sir!
Excellent video! Truly helpful and one of your best.
I am looking forward to ordering that pick and now I'll have a better shot at success. Thank you.
Awesome, i finally understand disc locks! Thanks
I have seen this video before and CZcams suggested it to me, so I viewed it again, i miss your videos but understand why you have gone quiet, wishing you a safe Christmas and a better 2022
from Perth Western Australia
Excellent video for beginners.
No. Thank you Bill. Your contribution to the community and sport has been nothing but stellar.
Ive been watching TLPL for a while now and seen this pick but Ive never seen him explain how the lock works like BB just did. Thanks BB
Great lecture and explanation,
Stay safe and everyone please remember to keep your hands washed up at all times in order to help prevent the spread of germs,
Peace out everyone
Very cool video. Been watching you and LPL pick these locks for years, and I can't say I really understood what was going on in the lock until now. Now I get why you start by turning the discs as far clockwise as they'll go. I hope sparrow can make more of these picks soon.
