At 13, I didn't even know that books other than my syllabus books exists; our society is just killing the literature.
Yes, it really is very sad 😞
And you know what makes it more tragic is the fact that the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize was Sir Rabindranath Tagore. This goes to show how truly India doesn't care about literature!
@@purvesh485 People don't even know what Gitanjali actually is - a poem collection or something else. The truth is - even hard core Indian readers haven't read Tagore Sir, not even I. That's something I always regret about, yet never put forth me to read it. That's strange to think why is it so. Maybe because I haven't listened anyone talking about 'Gitanjali', that can be a reason, I don't know, but this is it.
What do you think Sir why is it so?
Same I started reading in 8 class
When I show people my books they saw "I am already stuck in the course books I don't even have time to read these" or "who is gonna read this book"
I also don't have time
Thanks Shruti for such a lovely video. You cleared most of my doubts
Thanks a lot Shruti ❤️ It really helped me. I was so tensed from a month that I was not able to understand a single page of 'Wuthering Heights' by Emily Brontë , but now I am getting on track with reading at my usual pace.
This video is really for me , I'll pick up Frankenstein again
Nice!! Frankenstein is great and I think you’ll find it on Sparknotes!
I will follow the advice....
Thank you for it....
A lot of love from my side Ali from PK. The way you are explaining the things like (Giving the Reading tips), especially the difficult reading books.. Is Absolute fantastic! ❤️👍
Very informative! Releasing videos not only about book recommendations but also helping the reader how to deal with them!! 👏👏👏😃
Great job!!
Thank you so much ❤️
Whenever I'm having any difficulty, related to books then I don't know how but you always come with the perfect video 😍😍
I just love your suggestions ☺️😃
Thank you so so much!!
Wonderful tips, Shruti. You were bang on about not understanding every word in a novel. There is really no need to. And when you keep reading, you find that you start understanding more and more of the "difficult parts" without help. Your example about Pride and Prejudice was also so relatable !!! It is my absolute favorite book in THE world. And I read it when I was around 11. I remember not understanding more than half of the text. But somehow I could just understand the broad storyline and I simply loved it.
Another tip that I would like to add is to use an annotated edition. I make it a point to read either the Penguin or Oxford World Classics editions of classics because they explain a lot of the obscure references and also provide detailed notes on the sociocultural and historical context of the novel. That makes reading the text a lot more holistic experience for me.
Overall your content and presentation is brilliant !!! Do keep making such videos.
Penguin classics give best annotation in their books.
@@kuntaldey944 Oxford World Classics also have good notes. I generally prefer those because in Penguin classics, many times the endnotes contain spoilers, which beats the whole purpose of giving annotations in the first place. Price wise Oxford Classics are expensive though, so I buy used copies.
@@shivanibisht3998 thanks! I've not checked any Oxford classic yet, I'll definitely try.
Oh that’s a great tip!! I’ve actually never read an annotated book, but it sounds super useful!
@@fandomnewbie You bet it is !! In my Oxford World Classics edition of Frankenstein, the supplementary material is almost the same number of pages as the actual novel. Includes notes on all the changes made by the author in the subsequent editions. Similarly, Great Expectations includes Dickens' working notes, the alternate ending he discarded, etc. All this in addition to the introduction and explanatory notes on terms or references that might be difficult to understand for the modern reader.
Absolutely loved this video! ❤❤❤
Yayy!! Thank you Samragngi ❤️❤️❤️
Yeah I too left Great Expectations midway.... Will try sometime to pick it up again
Finally - sth helpful!
Hey. This was really helpful. Thank you for this video.
You are most welcome!
Thankyou needed this video just thinking about how to read Willam Shakespeare books and got notification of your video 🤗🤗
Sparknotes is very good for Shakespeare!!
U are a great help. That's why i admire u.
Thank you so much!!
Researching about a character and then finding out that he's dead is my worst bookish pet peeve 😂😂😂😂
Hahahhaha omg, that’s happened to me too and I get so angry when it does!
Thank You sooo much for this video!!
I am reading The Da Vinci Code and the words are very difficult and I think the story is also a bit complicated!
You encourage people to read books and I love your book recommendations!!
And you are the first booktuber I have searched for and I am very happy I found your channel!!♥️🙂
@Pravesh Kc currently am also reading The Da Vinci Code and yes I feel the same!! Btw Happy reading ☺
Thank you so much for your kind message!
I am also reading the Angels and Demons and I find it difficult to read
U give me positive vibes☺️❤️ i think after watching this video i should try reading the radio silence book again🙂🙂🙂🙂
Yess!! Radio Silence is so good!! Try the audiobook version - really well produced and will make it easier if you found it tough ❤️
I completely agree with spending enough time and work for reading and critical thinking and constant comparisons.
Yes! That’s the best way to read a book!
Thank you... ☺
Please make more such videos!
I recently choosed to read *The Autobiography of a Yogi* and it has soo many difficult words and sentences which I was trying to seach frequently but I guess these tips will help me
.. thank you soo much
Exactly right. This happens.
I really like your videos it's very helpful to us bt I want you to make a video about a good reading books App
I want to read oliver twist there are many versions plz suggest me a good version
never been so earlyyy!!
Yayy!! ❤️❤️
As a season reader, (kind of), books by Somerset Maugham really threw me off because I'm used to reading books with a solid story line. But as you keep reading them you realize that it's one of those books where you come for the story but stay for the writing. Such beautiful writing, so brilliantly written..it took me a lot of time to understand the underlying british humour but once you do, it's definitely worth the read.
The Moon and The Sixpence & Of Human Bondage my fav from Somerset Maugham
I haven’t read any of their books. But the British humour has got me intrigued.
Wanted to read The Girl with the dragon tattoo and saw your video
I am also at the beginning of my reading journey. My process of reading is a little bit different from yours. I read the book thoroughly first. Then read this with meaning and write down its meaning on the paper. I want to improve my English so I reread the book by its meaning.
Heyyy diiiiii how you imporave your english do you watch any channel for that
The way you mentioned that as a 13 year Harry Potter lover and fantasy lover you could not find that fun in pride and prejudice... That's very relatable. I always wanted to read the diary of a young girl but really i just couldn't.. now i would finally read it.. 🙈🙂🤗💖
Yes! Definitely pick it up. I’ve heard it’s a very powerful book!
Very useful and fun video 🙂🙂
Thank you so much!
Useful one! Thanks.
I generally follow the first and second for tough books, specially classics. As rightly said, looking for every other word in the dictionary will ruin the rhythm of reading. Also, I do check 'Ted-Ed' and 'School of Life' channels to get an idea about the authors and try to familiarise with their writing style, it helps me to some extent.
On that note, can I try to read Dickens once again?? Probably not 😪
More to be considered in case of translated classics, be it translator, publisher. A great deal of research and help from the people who actually read those books are required in those cases. Because when you are trying to get into Russian or Greek literature and you have huge expectations, you don't want to spoil the entire thing because of poor translation, page quality, no foreward etc.
I don’t think I will ever read Dickens or Russian literature. Just not my cup of tea 😣
@@fandomnewbie try Tolstoy atleast. I've read Anna Karenina and Tolstoy captured very minute to minute human emotions which sometimes betrays the person him/herself, like sense of envy, rage or delight even when his/her face isn't expressing so.
@@fandomnewbie Never say never 🙂. There are books that I left halfway back in college, just couldn't get through them. And now, around 10 years later, not only have I read them, they are among my favourites. Specifically for authors that we find intimidating, mostly it's just a question of getting used to their writing style. You'd be surprised to know, Dickens' work, when he was writing, was not even considered intellectual enough. It was considered more of commercial fiction, rather than real literature !!
Hi Shruti, can u please help me with Cassandra Clare's books?
Is infernal devices & mortal instruments related?
If yes then which set should I pick up first??
@Injamul Haque Can you please answer the second question as well? Which one should I read first?
@Injamul Haque thank you 😊
Hi Sonal! The books are all set in the same world, but the stories have nothing to do with each other. I haven’t read The Mortal Instruments books because I haven’t heard very good things about them.
I read The Infernal Devices (this is a prequel to Mortal Instruments) and I understood everything. And nothing about MI is spoiled. So you can start with either, no worries. But there are some books in the Shadowhunter world for which you need to read in order. But you’ll figure that out once you dive into the shadowhunter universe 😊
Mam you are my role model
I love you lottttt 😍😊😃😇
Thank you so much!! 😊❤️
My vocabulary is weak I can speak English but while reading i didn't understand what did I read
Hey,can I start pride and prejudice novel bcauz I want to start a classic 🌆
Depends on your interest. Pride and Prejudice is a love story set in 1800s England and focuses on the lives of women and noblemen in that era.
Amazing tips!!, I still remember the first time I read Pride and Prejudice and couldn't understand what was going on loll
Sameee! I was so frustrated. But I’m glad I picked it up again because now it’s one of my favs!
@@fandomnewbie same :)))
Truee😂
Hey i am 11 years old and and have red the whole harry potter series .7 books and it took me around 4-5 months to complete it all it was really fun reading it
That’s awesome!! Harry Potter is the best!
For me it's "1984" by George Orwell!🙆♀️
Yeah that book can be quite intimidating..
Orwell was a visionary writer ❤️
Bruhh, I bought it about 4 months ago and Paid attention to it just for a few days. Orwell used hard asf vocabulary, I'll surely try to read that book after some years😭😭😂
New vdo.. thanks
You’re welcome! Hope you enjoyed it!
oh my god this will be so helpful I have been trying to read the hate u give for so so long but never finish it cuz its so hard :(
Hey Rajanya! I think the problem might also be that "The Hate You Give" is meant for mature teens. Meaning around 15 or 16+ years old. I would suggest you give up on it completely and read it when you're older. I think you'll have a much better experience that way ❤️
@@fandomnewbie yeah I get that ok then
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. There is nothing as intimidating as Russian classics.
Yes, I have NEVER attempted to read Russian literature. And I don’t know if I ever will…
Though I've not tried yet, but what i learnt from some of my friends who are Literature students that Russian literature from Atlantic publication is THE best(very pricey too!), though, vintage classics of Dostoyevsky translated by Peaver and Volokhonsky is second best.
In that case I will say you're absolutely mistaken. Start Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. Choose your translation well. I'll advise Maud's translation which is available in Penguin Russian classics. It's waaaaaayyyy easier than Jane Austen or Charles Dickens.
Won't say anything about Dostoevsky though because it IS difficult. But to me every ounce of my effort was worth it. I read crime and Punishment 3 months back. I'm planning to reread it with a separate translation.
@@rajib17cmc thanks for your opinion.
I've read Anna Karenina from Fingerprint Publisher, I don't know the translator, it was not mentioned in the book, but it was some piece of literature. Tolstoy penned tiniest emotions felt by human beings, sometimes unknowingly, in this book. And its vast, covering multitude of topics in it. It was a voluminous book, but i was addicted and finished it in not many days.
Obviously War and Peace I'll pick up very soon, but I want to read Crime and Punishment first. So, can you please mention the publisher and translator which will be a balance between easiness to digest this classic, as well as maintains much of original essence.
@@kuntaldey944 hi Kuntal, actually my reply was intended towards Shruti and as I like her the most among all indian book tubers and somehow I felt our sensibilities match in terms of reading taste, I was disappointed to learn that she won't give Russian literature a chance. I'm pretty sure she'll be hooked to Anna Karenina from the very first paragraph as I did and you did too I guess. I don't think publishing house matter so much as the actual translation. I prefer Everyman's library edition which are superb.

Do Nancy Drew books need to be read in order?
I want to read war and peace ✌️ and this was helpful 👍👍
Tolstoyian 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Just looking at War and Peace is intimidating! I’m happy this video helped!! Happy reading ❤️
Can you suggest me some good crime, mystery novels other than Agatha Christie's ?
Have you tried Sherlock Holmes???
When I read a book firstly I don't understand so many words , so I get disappointed and stop reading books
I bought Oliver twist as a kid but never got after the first chapter I'll finally read it now. Thanks ❤️
Sameeee.. i dnf'ed it last year from the mysterious man chapter, it wasn't too difficult but i had reading slump..
Yayy! I hope these tips help ❤️
one more thing that help many people to go through difficult book is watching the adaptation before reading the book. for example, I gave my friend the fellowship of the ring and he couldn't read it because it's flowery, poetic and tbh difficult. so i suggested him to watch the movies first then read the book, he was blown away by the movies and then came to the books with a lot of enthusiasm and he had a ready-made images of characters and scenes from the movies which helped his imagination a lot while reading.
so that's the hack that I suggest people to get started
peace✌🏻
No. Always read a book before watching its adaptation.
Yasss!! Excellent tip! I did the same for LotR 😃
I hope this finds you all well.please help me , I am 21 years old boy studing first year of college in India,.The very unfortunate thing for me is i can,t read due to low sense of English language tell me what should I do.when I try to read I can,t comprehend it .some time I understand every world but even can,t understand. This things makes me feel low in life
Please I need some suggestions from you
Thanks
I started reading Sherlock Holmes after Ruskin bond which was a little difficult to me
Does sparknotes give spoilers?
Yes it does. It has detailed summaries and analysis. Which is why it should be used as a companion to reading. Once you’re done reading the book/chapter you can consult Sparknotes.
Good video ..it will help me in reading ..the eye of the world ..by Robert jordon..which I started today
Awesome! Hope you are enjoying the book!
Some classic authors like Shakespeare writing has a major old English like thou, art that re something that everyone needs to learn the basic eng structural words 🤔
The old English can get annoying at times. I personally don’t like it. But I know people who absolutely adore it. To each their own!
Why I'm not getting notification for your videos even after turning on the bell icon too 🤔
CZcams can be very strange sometimes 😖
It would be great if you give review of " A gentleman in Moscow ".
It basically portrays life of a higher class gentleman of Russian society and story of the person raising her daughter up to teenage. You'll have insights of Russian socio-cultural and political background. I loved this book.
I haven’t read it yet, but Kundal’s synopsis makes it sound interesting. I should add it to my TBR.
Hey I gave a suggestion on your last video! Did you see that?
Btw, great video !!!
Yes! I saw it. It’s A Great suggestion, but unfortunately I don’t speak Hindi that well 😣
@@fandomnewbie Oh, then gotta think about some other suggestions 🌟
It's very useful sissy❤ thank you so much 🥰😊
You are most welcome!!
The time machine by h g wells it so short but it's so hard to read
Yeah some books can look deceptively easy haha
Me-has online class in 1 minute
Also me- jumps to see shrutidi
Hahaha so cute you are ❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@fandomnewbie thanks
Ulysses is the one book I started reading but couldn't make to the End.
If you feel any English classic tough to read - especially big buddies, try other books from the same author. I use this technique.
Try to Read Dubliners by James Joyce, an anthology of Short stories about people of Dublin. I'm currently reading this.
Another technique is trying the author's earlier, initially written novels. Like, I started Tolstoy a year ago with his "Childhood, Boyhood, Youth" - his first novel - I bought the penguin classic, I felt the translation was easy and good. Currently reading his "The Resurrection"
@@sriranjit3684 That's what I did buddy. I read Dubliners, even though I didn't make much out of that either, but for a change that was easier to read - short and long stories collection.
By the way thanks, someone like you had given me the same piece of advice, and the book(Dubliners) as well. I am a pretty advanced reader now all thanks to men like you.
@@SagarSharma-bb2xo 😁
Ohh that’s a great tip. Reading a simpler book by that author first before moving on to the “beast” 😄
@@fandomnewbie Thank you Shruthi sis 🥰
I had read full book of pride and prejudice in a week and i didn't understand anything when i was in 9th 😅
❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️
😀😀❤❤👌👌
❤️❤️
I really have a bad habit. I keep on re-reading a single sentence or a word(even with the beginner books), I self-doubt myself so much whether I understood or not. It sounds stupid but it is ruining my speed limit and sometimes interest too. Iam working on it.I hope you will give me some tips too
I can feel it :( I do it sometimes.
Read with your eyes and mind and not with your mouth
@@livelife5761 🙄I dont read aloud and I dont mumble while reading
@@SurakshaKanuru maybe it happens because you lack concentration.. or you are not fully engrossed in the book
@@livelife5761 Thanks for the advice😊
please read one hundred years of soltitude and do a review ..pls mention me..too its a challenge
What do you mean it’s a challenge? 🤔
You don't know how much your videos help me. 😃I have used sparknotes earlier it's very helpful for reading classics! Thank you for those awesome tips! I usually tend to read difficult books for pleasure!
Your 13 year old version is totally me, with the exception that the 13 year old me liked Pride and Prejudice, and Harry Potter both! 😂😂
What are some books you would suggest? (for a 14 year old girl)
I’m so happy my videos help!! It’s reading comments like these that really keep me going. Thank you so much!
In terms of books for a 14 year old, if you haven’t already you can start the Ember in the Ashes series. I think you’ll really enjoy it!
Tale of two cities is so intimidating... I have picked it up twice but fail to reach even 50 pages.
After 10 pages :-(
Even many English speakers find it difficult to read - the unabridged version, also many Dickensians listed this as their least favorite Dickens
Wanted to read it because the context was so promising.
@@kuntaldey944 try the abridged version, if u need to read it only for the plot and characters, not for its rich and extremely difficult prose and vocabulary.
Yes!! I don’t think I’ll ever be able to read a Dickens book 😖
🤓🤓
😁😁
Moby Dick, it is absolute disaster for me. Language is way too tough and it was to the point that the writer actually admits in the book itself that he used a Thesaurus to write the damn book. And what's worse it is whaling encyclopaedia and the core story is hardly 30 percent but rest of just pages and pages and pages random facts about whaling practise
If u have problem with the language and vocabulary, then try abridged version - not the original version written by the author, but re edited for beginner level readers.
I’ve tried reading the abridged version of Moby Dick and even got bored with that. I just don’t do well with classics 😕
@@sriranjit3684 I have read the complete unabridged version. It's just that language is a drag and bulk of the story is just pages and pages of useless info that has nothing to do with the core story
Tried Truley devious 3 times bt failed terribly 🙄😶
That’s okay! Sometimes you just don’t like the book also. You can try again if you want to or move on to something else.
Autobiography of a yogi...
Hold my coffee .
Yeah, these can be intimidating 😫
Your mom has wonderful taste
Pls make video on book recommendation for 13 year olds
Will try to do that! I have one already as books for children - there are some recommendations for 13 year olds. Check it out!
U are soooo cute
Thank you!

I don’t think so actually. I never read them in order and it was fine for me. They all act as standalones as well..
