You had us at kolaches! Our favorite spot to get them is in Mission Beach (San Diego) at Olive Baking Company. Sausage, egg and jalapeño imeancomeonnnn đđ¶
Good, stay yo ass there.
Yeah, I'm going to be the Czech guy that says a Kolache is a fruit pastry and not a sausage. That is a pig in a blanket. It's like calling a hot dog a taco. All because some dude went in a kolache shop where they had both and referred to the pig as a kolache.
Oh, right on! I live in SD now, so Iâll have to go check that place out. Thanks for the recommendation!

@@TheMaskedheel Thats classic California for ya.
You haven't even come close to how hot it can get around here. Just wait until you have over 40 days with 100 degrees weather. It's been hot over the last few years but nothing compared too about 10 years ago.
Literally wondering where in Houston that you live that you can still get 20 miles in 20 minutes. It takes me 20-30 minutes to drive the 6 miles home from work every day.
Rob, didn't think about it previously but, yes, I must be a superfan. Love the videos, the humor is great (special effects, 80's/90's culture references) and your openness open revenues and costs. Who else is doing this?! Been watching since just after you finished the Joshua Tree tiny house. I'm in CA (OC) and still watch so I guess I'm not a "geographist"(?). Hoping to dive into AirBNB soon. Thanks for the great info and entertainment value!
Dude is super cool! He was really nice and even tipped us. I'm glad you like our city.
Welcome back to Texas man! Glad to have you in our beautiful, hot, sweaty, State! Hope to meet you one day!

I think people from Tennessee or Texas just worry when a lot of Californians (or other blue State people) wanna move to their state. The people will leave CA because everything is too expensive where they came from and move to a Red state and vote for the policies that made everything expensive where they left.
So true! đŹ
What about if they're native to those states? Rob is from Texas. When I lived in LA, about 60% of the people I worked with were from the mid-west/south. We never told them, "You better vote [insert political party here]".
@@eldermillennial2000 I guess the difference is that itâs going to be a lot more difficult to change California to to replicate the significantly less expensive and less intrusive states these people came from
So things like having equal rights for everyone make the prices go up? Okđđ€
@@supertec2023 Was speaking more about hiiiiiiigh taxes and lots of them. Your money will go a lot further in a red state. My house is in metro area of the state capital and is about $160k-$180k cheaper than the comparable house in Southern California.
I'm from California, LA specifically, I mean, I graduated Vine st. elementary, Larchmont Middle & Hollywood High. So I'm biased, but hear me out.
Mexican food- did you only eat at chain restaurants? best Mexican food in the world go to Olvera St. Breakfast Tacos... Home State is a TeX-Mex restaurant in Hollywood. yummy.
cocktails- The Frolic Room Hollywood Blvd. the best Dive Bar on earth. from the 1930s it was orig. the hangout for newspaper men, then Young Hollywood Stars and starlets, then locals. cocktails like an old fashioned will run you way under 10 bucks. It's the last bar on the Blvd. next to the Pantages Theater.
if you really need a Kolache. hit the beach. Huntington Beach has the Kolache factory. killer. while you're in HB, stop in at Perqs great bar, The Sugar Shack for lunch... yummy Cali cuisine, or Neptune's locker on the pier for fresh fish.
Traffic SUCKS. but finding an on ramp... easy, you've just got to know your surface streets. also, most traffic can be avoided if you know your surface streets. LA is a true GRID. so cutting thru town to avoid traffic is easy. trucks? meh, I've never wanted one. Cost of living is high out here, but so are wages to compensate.
not everyone is a Liberal Democrat, Living in a bubble nut eating, avocado toast loving hippy. I am, lol but there are plenty of Right Wingers in town.
I guess it's all about perspective. I'm from here so I love it. I've lived in Tx. didn't hate it, but it just wasn't home. same when I lived in NJ. killer food, love the people, autumn and spring is amazing, but it's not home to me either.
perspective is everything
We just relocated to Tx 6 months ago after living in So Calif all our lives.
I will say Texas is amazingly beautiful in Hill Country! I thought Iâd miss the mountains but I think this is better! You can get to a top of a big hill and oversee the county for miles and watch the beautiful sunset across the land!
I will say youâre right about your highlights from calif Alavera st tacos đź- the best!- Texas doesnât know what carne asada is - very weird- BUT! California doesnât have a clue what good brisket /bbq is till you get here ! The infrastructure on freeways ⊠are insane compared to California- and the crazy speed limits in Texas are off the charts ! I was driving with fists clinched to the steering wheel for a while until I acclimated lol! Thereâs a highway out here where you can go 80mph đł! Normal âregularâ highways that allow 70mph - two lanes both sides đŹâŠ
I thought Iâd miss the beach - but the lakes are gorgeous and serene ! I lived in San Bernardino county - very dangerous in the actual city- where your nightly lullaby was gunfire and ambulances⊠here , psh- youâd be hard pressed to hear a siren in hill country ! Itâs very peaceful ! What I live best so far - people say hi and mean it - you go to the grocery store and people just talk to you like youâre family ! Another plus is that in Cali, my whole block was democrats - to post a Trump sign meant youâd have haters tag your car - leave nasty notes etc- here in a Texas I live in an all Republican community ! Eeeehaw - Iâm home đ€ !!!
I also moved to TX for family, but from CO. Weather is literally my kryptonite here...humidity slaps ya in the mouth!
Hey are you doing any Houston projects or investment clubs/gatherings? I'd be interested in supporting ya if so!
I think Houston is the worst big city in TX, so I was glad to see you rate it this favorably against LA. I've lived in both TX and CA, and can't imagine leaving TX again. I didn't really fall in love with TX until I moved to San Antonio though.
San Antonio is da bomb. Best food too.
San Antonio is beautiful. And yes Houston is the worse it has a high crime rate.
Although , if I had to pick between El Paso and Houston.. eh , I would pick Houston. Lol both are bad options imo.
Didn't know you were from here. Welcome back!
Woah, woah, woah, I had to pause at 7:40 for the crawfish bit. If you're in Houston, do yourself a massive favor and head to the "True LA" aka Louisiana, and treat yo self to some damn good, no no, THE BEST crawfish.
That is all for now, keep up the amazing content đ€Ł
The architecture around the medical district is beautiful. I've seen Tudor and colonial that were amazing.
Itâs definitely one of the best areas around town
I moved from southern CA to rural NC recently and am still struggling with the culture shock. I agree that being somewhere politically diverse is ideal though.

I love your ode to civility! Regarding Texas and California (having lived in both, currently Texas), I can't take the real estate prices in CA (although Austin is starting to challenge), can't take the 90+ degree heat for 6 months in TX
Stay yo weak ass in CA then
I live in CA and have 110+ heat for 4 months. Traffic!!! Takes 2hrs to go 40 miles, not allowed self defense, stand in line everywhere, rolling blackouts, no water, etc etc etc. The Lustre is gone.
From a fellow Texan, gotta love the feeder roads!!! LOL

I grew up calling them klobĂĄsnĂk. My favorite kolache is apricot.
Welcome to Houston! Glad you didnt decide to go to Austin like the rest lol what area did you move to?
Duude, you forgot to mention all the toll roads in Houston!! Also geography, Houston is like swamp land. Not a mountain for 100s of miles. Outdoor activities suuuck. đ I prefer San Antonio but SoCal will always be home. To each their own. â

OMG! Yesssss!!! Only 7:05 in, and I had to pause to say I miss Kolaches SO MUCH!!! Lived in The Heights in Houston from â90-â94, and the food was definitely one of the huge pluses. Love Houston! Good memories there. đ€

@@Robuilt Gosh, IDK. My husband and I drove through Houston when we moved from East TN back to CA last year, and it looked like it had just blown up with development. Iâd love to go back and spend some time checking out the art and food scene. My memories of Houston are mostly positive, but it took me a good year to fall in love with the place. That was the first big city I lived in (I grew up in rural East TN) and the change from my country life to Houston was much more of an adjustment than the change from Houston to L.A. AnywayâŠwatching your video has renewed my interest in Houston and Texas in general. Love your perspective. Always fair and open minded. Cheers!

I would like to report this for factual inaccuracy. I would never call myself a Texas girl, Caleb.
Grew up in LA. Moved from Marina del Rey to Boulder, CO - don't miss LA one bit! And I had a nice house walking distance to Venice Beach and worked from home. So I had it better than most in SoCal, but the quality of life is sooooo much better in CO!
I'm an Oklahoman, and it's hilarious how similar our states are. There's like zero difference when it comes to culture, food, etc. Breakfast tacos, queso, tex-mex, BBQ, all that.. yes please.
Racism, absurd commitment to faith, misogyny, homophobia...
You're right. Texas and Oklahoma are exactly the same.
Iâm a Superfan from San Antonio! Love your videos Rob! Come check out the Hill Country and our rivers when youâre in our area!
On point!!!
I used to work in San Jose, CA. I lived 25 miles from the job. Everyday on the way to work it was a 2 plus hour drive to work to go 25 miles. Everyday on the way home from work, it was a 2 plus hour drive home to 25 miles. I used to think my gps couldn't be right everyday, but it was.
Crayfish commentary was hilarious.
Houston's mosquitoes are on a different level. I had been bitten by mosquitoes all of my life playing outdoor sports & being outdoors all the time because of the State, MS, I grew up in. But Houston's mosquitoes it was like I was allergic to their bites I would scratch so much, it would create a scab on my arm. I could never figure out my skin reaction to Houston's mosquitoes bites!
All the best in Texas!
Itâs hard to find good gumbo at a restaurant, but Houstonâs got some good ones. Boudreauxs is a good starting place.

Yeah, the heat here in Texas this year is terrible. Definitely the hottest overall year in a good while. I was born here, and I am hot natured and have never gotten "used" to it. Ugh.
H-town! Nice! See ya on the west side in the burbs!
Iâve considered moving to Texas from California many times, and love it there, but it canât ignore the fact that itâs about to become even *more* hostile for women of child-bearing age đ€·đŒââïž. So thereâs no way Iâd move my family there today.
But⊠I did find it too hard to be in California - I have a horse farm, and water restriction was starting to get scary. So we moved to PNW 4 yearsâ ago and I could not be happier đ€.
I still think Texas is a great place. Just not necessarily safe for *everyone*.

Ive lived all over both coasts while in the Navy myself and married to a 20+ yr Navy and corporate man and lived in CA (Sacramento - Citrus Heights and Oroville) and Humble/ Fort Worth/Keller and now back to Humble in 2019 after fleeing the PG&E fires in Butte (Oroville area) and can say with certainty I would never ever move back to the state of California. Not only is CA not affordable, but the massive amount of homelessness, crime, drug use ( not counting Weed) huge huge utility bills was a moment of "clarity" for my family to get out. The Northern part of Houston is growing yet I was able to purchase my 3 bed/ 2 bath 1600+ sq ft home for $150k on a corner lot. My gas bill in March 2022 was $98 and electric bill was $118, water/sewer was $67. Where can you live in CA like this? You cant.
What do you feel about Airbnb in Tampa Fl market
Glad y'all came back to Texas. I moved back to Houston area after UT and I still love it. We're big and diverse but it's a real community at heart.
How the F didn't you mention how California has prop 13? Texas can tax u out your home. My friends grandma's property tax went up to over a thousand bucks a month in 07 because value went up, so they taxed more. So sad. Growing up in California, my dad always said, "at least we have prop 13". Seriously, look it up. Then get Texas to pass it or similar, plz
The property tax issue here in Texas is one of the biggest things folks just totally gloss over when they talk about the financial incentives of relocating here from California. And something that a LOT of the buyers in the past 24 months or so are feeling the crunch of right at this moment. One of, but not the only, reason we're getting out of Texas after lived here my entire life.
Actually, as a native Texan I think itâs completely understandable to say that stereotypically, Californians are the worst. Theyâve destroyed their state and we donât want them to destroy ours itâs that simple. The core of Texas values is rugged individualism and freedom. And if you are courageous enough to uphold those two things and accept a culture that does so, Texas welcomes you. Except on private property.
Eh.

Hello. I like your list. May I add a number 11 to your list? In Texas people are kind to each other when on the roads. They'll hang back and let you in as you are merging and when they do, the proper response is to wave your hand in front of your rear view mirror to say Thank You. They will often wave back to acknowledge your recognition of their kindness. Also, when driving in the country parts of Texas, people will pull over to half of their lane and the shoulder of the road. This message is, I acknowledge that you may want to pass me and I'm making it easier for you to do so. Then the thank you wave follows again. It's about courtesy. So if y'all are moving here, please move here and adopt these road language skills and kindnesses. The more of us are doing the right thing, the less road rage and the like there will be.
One other thing, please do your best to not drive up the cost of housing. Somehow that happened in Santa Fe New Mexico when we lived in another part of the state. The old-timers on a fixed income got run out of town because it got so expensive. I know you like the less expensive houses and the lower taxes, but if we're not careful all of the things you like will be gone. It's all of our jobs to keep the nice things nice for everyone.
We'll, y'all, have a blessed day. Yeah, you hear that a lot down here too. đđđ
i don't know about that..., I live in NJ and go back to Dallas and I see more road rage down in TX than here
I understand what you mean and I can agree to a degree. . The bigger cities have many transplants from other places or people in rental cars.. I'm originally from Maryland/DC area and when I moved to LA for a short term job in the 80s, I fit in quite well with drivers. So much in fact that when a guy came to visit me from Wisconsin, I didn't let him drive my car for risk that he wasn't savy enough to know how it works out there. Texas now, is even better that in the late 80s in those other two places where I drove.

My wife teaches Czech and the word kolaches drives her nuts. Kolach is the singular and kolache is the plural. Adding and s to the end of the plural word does not make it more plural. Know you know too.
After talking to her about this, I also found out that Texans have made the term kolach apply to many more things than it did in the mother country. Kolach are open faced pastries with a jam type filling. What Rob was talking about are called something else everywhere but Texas.
We're literally moving to Houston right now. How cool is that! :)
My goodness I remember when you posted that video & the comments đ„Ž lol.

I lived in CA for 16 years until I was 22 and TX for maybe 3 years in my adult life and now live in Colorado. I couldnât stand living in hot humid, mosquito weather with little do to outside (also from Houston area). So Colorado it was! Lol. My husband and I couldnât wait to move out of Texas even with family there. I was so depressed living there and tried to make the best out of it, but after growing up in mountains and outdoors is a culture shock to live in âcement cityâ aka Houston. My husband is 100% disabled vet so we wouldnât have to pay property tax in Texas but even thatâs not enough to keep us there LOL. I couldnât and wouldnât move back to California for many reasons now even though the weather, beach, and mountains were amazing. Colorado is a great middle ground in my opinion.

I was just back in LA for a visit and everyone in LA is so skinny and pretty, most everyone in TX is fat. Friends in the industry is nice and meeting (and hanging out with) random celebs in LA is a real thing. For crawfish, go to Louisiana where they do it right, Texas is like Louisina light when it comes to bayou cooking. Otherwise, sort of solid listicle. ;)

Welcome to Houston. Itâs a gritty city but it has a lot to offer and quite a scene. Best of all, itâs not a pretentious dump. 2 words: Mexican Martini
This should be C vs Houstonish. Texas has differences in every region. Architecture is better in Austin/Hill country/SA. Dallas is more like OC. WEATHER is better in SA than Dallas. If youâre about weather and want to move to TX live more central/south and away from the gulf. Far south from tornadoes as well. Food is by far better and more variety in Texas. Not even a question. Animals/insects are abundant in TX. California could be better if taxes were more friendly and cities made better political moves.
Everyone calls them "kolaches" because they're *kinda like* kolache and it's easier to pronounce than the real name, klobĂĄsnĂk. If you want to impress a Czech, use the real name. You will be their hero. Source: am one quarter Czech.

You lost me after the colachi or something like that, you know what really matters what we need to know is cost of living and pay wages, my cost of living here in California is like $6k a month from gas ✠to my rent and everything in between, I'm a Electrician and I make $45/h in the bay area and I know in Texas any professional trade there they pay you peanuts compared to California, So just go to school becoming professional and you'll be fine in California and give ure self a raise and live better by becoming a professional and stop crying on how expensive it is to live in my sunny California and you'll be fine..!
