How to Set up Google Analytics 4 on Shopify & Track Sales (Updated Method)

- In this Google Analytics 4 and Shopify tutorial, I share how to install google analytics 4 on Shopify.
The cut-off date when Universal Analytics stops working is July 1st 2023. So, installing the new Google Analytics 4 is vital!
There is a new way to setup Google Analytics 4 with Shopify. Last year you had to embed the GA4 code into the liquid theme on your website (a little complicated).
However, now you can simply use the Google Channel app on Shopify and this will automatically setup everything so you can start tracking important activities happening on your website like conversions!

Welcome! If you are using Google Tag then yes you will need to install that.
@@StewartGauld I have the code from Google Tag Manager at the moment because I followed a video indicating that so I was under the impression that it was mandatory but then I found your video which doesn't mention Google Tag Manager so I assume that there are cases where it's needed and other cases where it is not, this is basically what I'd like to know. The interface has changed a bit on both the Google & CZcams app and now google merchant center is pushing a mandatory update this month on the 22nd. It's hard to keep up. I was able to connect a google merchant account to Shopify but now none of the products are approved because it says there is missing shipping information. :( In any case, I will subscribe to your channel because as others have said your videos are very clear and easy to follow and help inform what to do even if things have changed.

Have had problem with google channel and trying to connect GMC through shopify. Ended up with problems like many other shop owners. Using the google app, will we be required to fill on gtin, mtn, etc on the app as we want to avoid at all cost now? Horrible reviews as well on the google and youtube app. We just want to view analytics on our store admin. Please advice.
What is your goal with the GMC?
@StewartGauld It was to list our products on the free listing on google shopping. But shopify convinced store owners to connect with little to no instructions and did not give the option to select specific products. This caused major issues with GMC when we first opened our store. They provided little to no help. Don't want to go through that again. They did state it will not connect to the merchant center, which probably concerned many. But want to ensure it does not affect us again with future requirements!

Does anyone know how we can track someone specifically? We have a link that directs people to shopify, but they might use a different email on their Shopify account than what we have, so is there a way to direct them to Shopify with a tracking id and capture it with their actions on Shopify with Google Analytics or anything? Can't really find any information on this.
I'm not exactly sure what you mean.
What will happen if you connect the property without removing the code that was placed before? Does that mess up the data being collected in some way? My Google Analytics property was already connected but I'm interested in using the Google app integration in Shopify. Thanks to whoever can answer.
It's best practice to remove the old code for GA4 and use the app method showen in this video. This will eliminate possible issues in the future.

I have Google & CZcams installed. Google Channel doesn't exist. How do I connect Google & CZcams to Shopify from this point?
Same process just the app name has changed.
Connect a Google Analytics property shows tells me to create a new property. Google Account is connected correctly, property is created correctly. Neither reloading page nor reconnecting google account changes this :(

@@StewartGauld never I am new to Shopify, so there was no code I had to remove beforehand. The problem is probably caused by the fact that there ist a password on my shop since I am currently in the pause and build plan. Was quite difficult to figure that out when you don't know if it is a shopify or google issue.
Hii I just did everything, but on my google analytics I have this message : "No data received from your website yet." i don't know why... I use shopify and my Shop is protect by a password so is "Opening soon " is that something to do with ?? Please need help, thank you so much

Really? You shouldn't of needed to.
Yeah none of this worked for me, I ended up utilising someone off Fiverr to setup analytics. Following the above method didn't attach any tags onto the website or code. No data was tracked that way.@@StewartGauld

You can delete your property on GA.
how long it takes to collect data for the first time?
It can take up to 48 hours. But you should be able to see live visitors right away.

Hello, In my theme.liquid file, I deleted the code for google analytics, (and for UA too) but I still have one code snippet for Google tag manager and another for gtag.js Google ads, Should I delete those too? Also the code in settings>checkout>order... I have code for Google ads, Google tag manager data layer and google tag manager. Thanks a lot!!
If you have setup your account with Google ads and the Google Tag manager that way then it should still work. Don't change the setup unless it stops working.
