I was wrong about the towing mirror thing- you legally need them for any trailer that is wider than your car (but from a practical, non-legal standpoint you don’t need them)
So do you need them for the frontier?
Isn't being able to see behind you practical enough of a reason lol...? Wtf.
@@toddavis8151the Cub Frontier is the almost the same width as the Prado - 1.94m v 1.88m / under 3cm each side. Technically you should get extension mirrors
@@toddavis8151teeeechnically (it’s wider by 7.5mm each side) but I have great vision behind it so never use them
@@firetofork I’m towing a Cub Scout with a Mitsubishi challenger and I have no complaints with vision. However I’m very conscientious about not breaking the law
I know Sam doesn't like to be on camera much, but it was good to see the whole family enjoying some time together. These vans are way beyond my budget, but it is good to see what is possible.
There is absolutely no way a child can be spoon-fed without you opening your mouth at the same time. Well done, you passed the, I love my kid test.
Honestly the distinct lack of cooking in this episode kinda makes me think that your approach to camping with a family needs to be a whole series called "Fire to FAMILY". Could be a good shout, I'd watch it
I like that name!!
Cracking video Harry. From a single bloke who just had a swag, then a wife and kids upgraded to a camper van and then a van to accommodate us all and fit in amongst a growing family, the best thing is everyone is happy, to be able to camp with the family and keep the wife happy with young kids and everyone enjoys the experience, nothing beats it. So adjust the accommodation to suit the age of the kids and revert back later on. Caravan park camping teaches your kids social skills which will be beyond any other experience available and stand them in good stead for life. Keep up the great work.
When my family was your children’s age , we used to tent camp in the VHC often, they would have a bath in a food crate with the water heated with a glind in-line heater . Love the memories you are making…
Beautiful looking spot for camping with the family. No doubt a good serenity vs vibe ratio. Thanks for the video, we are currently tossing up between getting a hybrid or a camper so thanks for the help and looking forward to the next episode. Love the channel dude.
I grew up camping with my family. Great to see your family out and about. How good is a quick set up!
Hey man, what a family... start them young and they will do it for life. Both of my boys had their 1st birthdays camping on Frazer Island. All of my 4 kids have 4wds and campertrailers and they will use them regularly. You are doing well!!
Having only had camper trailers and full caravans, it was very interesting to see your family perspective on hybrids. Looking forward to the next video.
Strangely enough we are in the middle of a series comparing all sorts of rigs. We are sharing our experience with all the different types we have used over the years. Caravans are hatd to beat for pure convenience. Personally I do prefer full height vans though. The one thing I have learned is, thete is no such thing as a perfect rig.
Thank you for doing this video. There’s just so many options, styles, pros & cons to which way to go. This episode was framed so eloquently and I am hanging out for next weeks
No matter which way you camp, we've found the most important things are to make memories with your family.
Loved your video. Awesome getaway with the family jumping on the plane to a good spot. Keep up the great work. Loved the water kicking and bath by the fire. Great experiences
Harry thank you for this. For the glimpse in to your family as well. really enjoyed this.
Family, Just ordered a H16 from ORE, upgrading from a Mountain Trail after a lifetime of campers and tents, enjoyed your video and even happier about the decision now.
You will love it!!
So glad to see your whole family together this episode. Bubby seems to be doing well. Interesting review of this camper. Loved the way the roof is raised. You didn't comment on the east/west bed layout and your thoughts there.
I went from a camper trailer to a hybrid when the family came along. Love them, and great to hear your thoughts too.
Your family is lovely, the vibe by itself is wonderful to rest in. Thank you!
Awesome video, and a great family getaway for you all, lovely to see
Very informative video Harry. We have a Hybrid in our Family and love it. It can get into places bigger vans can't. We love the quick set up and pack up. Cheers!
Really enjoyed the video with your family. Great moments the kids will remember forever. Great to see the cub review. Enjoy the east coast, catch you round one day.
Thanks for sharing your family trip. We have a small hybrid camper which we take off road. I look forward to seeing your next video.
After camping with a poptop for 12 years, just changed to a hybrid. Agree with all your comments. It's a strange feeling being set up in a few minutes. Love the liw weight and size, I've got a Reconn R2
I will likely never have a camper but it’s fun watching your FAMILY enjoy it. I really enjoy your videos. They are quite relaxing in a way.
Glad you got to enjoy the hunter valley area with your family, so many great spots to visit.
That was hilarious Harry.
Sam, "that's genuinely very nice" she seemed surprised you can cook 😅😅😅
😂😂😂😂
Nothing beat camping with the family
Great video mate, also top work showing a balance of work/family life.
awesome vid as usual love watching and refining the cooking skills, I have gone from hoochie's to tent's then swags to tent's again then to a all canvas camper trailer (which was a 5hr setup and tear down) to a hybrid so nice and love it, goes anywhere i have wanted to go so far more places to travel with it yet. keep the videos coming great to see Sam and the kids enjoying the out doors and the camera around as well.
Nice one Harry! Good family trip.
I have three young kids and you need to find away to make getting away as simple as possible, otherwise it’s too hard and un enjoyable. We brought a 10year single axle expanda, and that’s made a massive difference for us and in our price range. They are only young for a little while 👍🏻
Nice work. Real and honest opinions from an experienced camper on a young family utilizing a camper trailer v hybrids.
It was a surprise running into you and your family at the MA Baker at Booral on the Bucketts way. Even though it was brief it was nice to meet you.
As someone who has done it all camping & never wanted to tow a van, the only thing we miss is the ability to tie-down stuff on the camper trailer & being able to see behind you. The ease of set up & pack down, being able to pull over nearly anywhere & be able to access everything, even catch 40 winks & the fact it is more secure when you leave camp has been a game changer for us. We have an off-road teardrop (only the two of us now) & don’t plan on getting a bigger van, but if we did it would probably be a hybrid. Every set up has some compromises, whatever works best at the time & just makes life easier, I am all for it.
We ended up getting towing mirrors & they do make a big difference, worth having in my opinion.
Nice to see a video with your family. Just bought myself a hybrid, waiting for delivery, different make though.
Great video. Look how far you have come from chats around a fire with Alex to reviewing camper/caravans, one thing that remains true is you and keeping it real without the BS. Keep up the great work. 💪👍
Great to see you making memories for your family.
I went from rear fold camper to hybrid and love it, welcome to the hybrid family. No need for an inside cooking set up, like you said an induction cooktop would be a good backup. I've got a 50lt upright fridge outside and same inside, plenty.
Am thinking of the C16 so this was a great intro vid. Love seeing the "family" in this one, ever expanding...:)
FAMILY
Love that you do this and show us all its easy. Just sold a tourer with a roof top tent and now have a fam car and a trailer. Showing my wife this vid and she us know frothing to get a tent again and take our 2 year old and soon to be newborn! Winning.
Awesome ep mate, thoroughly enjoyed it . We've done the same thing, started with swags did the tent thing, campers and with two boys the pop up van it makes camping/glamping a lot easier with a young "family"
As a family of 5 we started in a 2 room tent and needed a trailer to load everything in, then it was 3 dome tents . Then a hard floor camper(WA made) now down to two we looked at caravans and hybrids for that ease of setup. And as you said there is no perfect set up, there is alway a compromise. That was a top spot too.🍻 cheers.
Am definitely looking for an easier alternative to our camper trailer but not ready to give up camping. Hybrids might just be the answer. Great to meet your family.
I religeously watch your vids on sat morning, I liked this one and I cant believe how much Billy has grown up
Great video Harry. The cub is a sweet setup. We have 2 kids 13 and 11 now and have had a campertrailer the whole time. I can say it does get easier as the kids get older.
Sounds great! We had a Cub camper, can’t remember the model, however it was great. Now we’ve evolved over many, six I think campers and caravans, to a motorhome.
Love the set up! Pull up, put fridge onto gas, turn seats around!
Set up, get a beer!
Thank you and your family for this great review.
Ps.
Great to see a good bloke with his family.
Well done.
I remember your first camping trip with Billy and it went downhill very quickly (I think he got a really high temperature…). I admired at the time how honest your video was (not just showing the Instagramable photos. Nice to hear your thoughts on the hybrid camper.
Some of those comments in the end really hit home and has made some of our decisions for when we take delivery of ours early next year, especially the one about the fridge, even though we'll be going the other way, and the portable induction cooker. As we've deleted the inside hob and sink, that's going to be a good place to place it, if needed.
Brilliant video!
Very enjoyable video. Whether Hybrid or caravan having a easy setup and some home comforts like shower etc makes camping comfy and easier for parents and kids.
Family.
Hi Harry, We bought a Stoney creek scout 11. We really like it, it’s easy to tow and narrow so don’t have towing mirrors and it gets down narrow tracks.
It’s tiny but we squeeze 4 of us and a dog under one of the kids beds and it’s way better than our old camper.
We are actually up at Coffs currently in the flogging down rain and we are perfectly dry watching your show.
My family would love a van like that, but I want a cook book more ! Hehe, great video again
We went straight to a hybrid after lengthy research which identified the many shortfalls of camper trailers. We didn't want to be that couple wasting money making changes. Glad you're enjoying the hybrid. I think the perfect set up for a young family would be one with bunks.
Thanks for sharing
Hubby and I have all grown kids, with grandkids now. We have a hybrid and love it, truly! Like you said, your own cabin. We also have the option of putting a bunk bed above the dinette in grandkids come. Our is a 4wd twin axle and Hubby is a truck driver and loves how easy towing it is. PS, thanks for the tuna recipe 😊
I’ve been following you for years and I agree it’s all about outdoors and cooking with the fire. BUT then kids happened and it all changed “FAMILY”. I am now looking at a hybrid camper from the toilet / shower / kitchen benefit.
Okay, not even half way through video and you've convinced me that a hybrid van is the go, eventually... Was thinking of upgrading my budget trailer/ RTT camper for a forward fold for "family" camping (me, 6yo boy, 5yo girl, occasionally mum and/ or dog), but will make do for now and save for one of these. Hopefully get one second hand closer to when we set off for our lap (waiting for kids to get a bit older/ long service leave to kick in)
Cool ep guys, looks a lovely Van
Our Family loves our Hybrid. Nice inclusion of the song from The Castle as well!
Great to see the whole family in the vid Harry.
Great video. We have just put an order in on a hybrid as an upgrade from our forward fold. Our "family" is two fur kids. We are heading to Adelaide from Perth shortly with a swag, a German Shepard and a husky cross to pick it up. Coming back in comfort. I'm looking forward to both legs.
Love the honesty
Looks like a nice family van. Thanks!
Good to see your ‘family’. 👌👍
Best B roll ever. Family memories. ❤
Family. What a great review, I often wonder if the pop tops are too hot or cold in different temps, look forward to the next video.
We had a Cub Drover for a couple of years we had an amazing time in that up the Cape , Bungles Gibb Road lots of outback WA and all over outback Australia in general that’s why we bought it, we have now gone into a full size caravan with the washing machines, air conditioning a big fridge don’t get me wrong, but it’s definitely not the camping experience we have had…we can’t take our van into our favourite Fitzroy River campsite with the big salty gliding past us and having a big Jabiru walking thru our campsite.
Was lovely to see you guys camping as a FAMILY
Enjoyed this, thanks Harry. We’re still Brumby ppl I think, Kayaks on top and off road capability, kids in sleeping bags on the hard floor.
Have been curious about the H16, stoked to have you road test for all of us.
Still thinking the Frontier would be our step up, especially if future models have the kitchen all connected like the H16.
“Family” camping, woot!
I was anti towed caravan , but once i have a kids currently my mind changed, now i just design my own one and tried to make small and multi purposed camper trailer..
Hey Harry, with regard to the power setup and consumption with aircon etc, I’d strongly suggest sussing out a QLD-based company called “Safiery”. I visited their HQ and met the lead dude “Bruce” a while back now, they showed us through a bunch of their setups and what it allows you to do as far as freedom off the grid. Pretty crazy setups (3kw+ charging from a 250a alternator, instant hot water, induction 😂, aircon) as well as heaps of other niceties that you just won’t get out of other 12v based setups.
They use (mostly) 48v setups with a heap of Victron equipment and a bunch of proprietary components too.
Knowing how hard you gush for “good gear” makes me think you’d be pretty blown away with what they have to offer.
It’s not cheap, but it’s really, really good stuff. They’re on CZcams/Instagram etc too.
Worth checking it out, it’s chalk and cheese compared to consumer grade stuff like redarc/enerdrive/etc.
Cheers!
As a camper trailer person never getting a caravan, buying a hybrid was the best compromise i ever made.😂
Looking at the H16 vs a Frontier/ Drifter I think for a family the forward folds are the way to go.
I have a drifter myself and are planning to add one grasshopper to the brood and the Drifter will be perfect for a family of 4. The rear bed is plenty of room for one or both kids and the collapsible table gives you another bed.
One day the kids will want to longer sleep in the camper with Mum and Dad and move out to the annexe or their own tent/ swag which will suit us. Still leaves you with a fantastic interior and that spare double bed if you bring a friend or need a little more storage space.
On the flipside IF you got the H16 with the bunks for the kids you lose a lot of that interior space that makes the inside so liveable in a H16. And then once the kids say "eww gross im not sharing a room with my parents" you are left with a kid sized bunk bed taking up half the living space in the H16.
I think the H16 is amazing and would suit either a couple looking for something a bit more luxurious than a camper but not as hefty as a fullsize OR a family with older kids who sleep outside in a tent or swag already. I feel like optioning it with the bunk severely limits its usefulness and lifetime with you and when it starts at 80k you would want thing to last a loooong time.
The big thing is that we never use the inside area of the Frontier for anything except sleeping. We never use the lounge
Hello mate well done keep on your side of the road when you’re travelling road safety with the family ❤
Nice video!! Our family of 5 spent 5 months in a Goldstream Storm this year. That had its limitations particularly weather and each extreme temp. This option looked incredible. Bring from Newcastle are see a few more Cubs around but I reckon they are still few and far between because of their price, albeit they are Aussie made.
Anyways. Keen for the next one.
Code word....family
Just love camping ❤we just getting our selfs ready for along team trip
FAMILY
Always enjoy your videos and real world reviews. I still love taking the kids out in the swags, but id get one if i had the money. Keep up the quality content 🍻
Today i just picked up a rear fold camper to make family camping a little bit easier. Cant wait
Number one best thing I find with van life is the almost no setup time. Even easier than a cabin, your stuff is already inside.
Nothing beats relaxing 5 mins after arriving and watching others go through their long setup process of building their tent or camper trailer or even swag.
We started out with a dome tent with a family of four , migrated to a soft floor camper trailer , then a Jayco camper and now with the children grown up and just the two of us a small single axle off-road pop top caravan. Still use tents and a swag occasionally but for extended trips you can't beat the comfort and ease of set up of the van. It's all a compromise at the end of the day.
That’s the evolution of camping!
Single bloke yeah a swag plus esky is fine.
Then the family comes along and boom caravan!
I did exactly the same thing, sometimes I miss the swag but in inclement weather I loooooove my caravan
Im currently doing 6 months (4 months in) in an L16 and can tell ypu when its 45 degrees having an insulated shell and air conditioning is amazing
All good for the family
Great video, however, not all hybrids are the H16. In fact we are currently have a H16 on order as a step up from our current beloved ZoneRV Expedition 12 (which we have just put up for sale). We are at that stage where we will compromise the ability to get really off road (which our expedition 12 gives us) for a larger van with a few more bells and whistles 😁. Super content keep it up
How lucky is Billy, loves camping & gets to enjoy a hot tub by the fire... Heaven!
Hybrid is a great option for a young family - anything that maintains sanity is key!! 🙃
Love family camping trips!
Nice to see your “Family” 😀
Looked like a nice family holiday 😊
Family
Great looking van that would be a real contender for our next upgrade.
Great to see you over on this side of the country and welcome to Newy. Had I known, I could have dropped you off some CBCo IPAs :)
The one thing that makes my soft floor camper a bit of a downer is waiting for the canvas to dry before packing up.
Real word demo is far more interesting than your typical sales video. Love CUB products matched with the Fire to Fork team. A few IPA's and Barrington Tops. A match made in heaven.
Did I use the code word FAMILY ? Oops
Enjoyed that, especially with it being sunny. Here in the UK we have the European version of the Hybrid Caravan.
Family is what it's all about. Nice one 👍
Im loving all your videos mate so happy I've finally got someone who I can enjoy watching their life what a beauty. As once what Vin diesel said... Family
That was neat and there are so many options when it comes to camper, hybrid etc. I could have sworn, we saw glimpses of the other van in the video, guess will have to wait to next week to see full vid and not just views from above lol😅
I love how surprised Samantha sounded about how good the rice was. My wife always sounds surprised that my cooking is good... which it is nearly always good. Bec and I have been looking at hybrids as well, we've got 3 kids and want to do a lap of Aus, but we're not keen on towing a giant van all the way around.
Family - looks like a great van!
We are in the midst of discussing how our next travelling set up will be so it's good to hear your thoughts on the hybrid
The little ones are so so beautiful, but when they finally go to sleep its a good feeling.
Great comparison of camping in trailer and a hybrid caravan from a young family prospective. Well done.
