- Join Bowyer Ted Fry of Raptor Archery in learning about how to make your own bow. Starting with raw wood, Ted will show you how he begins to craft a self bow. This video outlines the key elements of the bow-making process.
Holy cow, look at your huge pile of bow wood!! I am so jealous.
Touch the wood, feel the wood, be the wood. Good vid
I dont wanna be Split
I took one of Ted's classes. Well worth it, thanks Ted!
Love it, keep up the good work.
yes , I remember those days as well, good times
your english is better than some people from right here in the U.S. Peter, thanks for the info on the bench , I will look into that.
true art
Thanks! Didn't know the precise characteristics of each type of wood.
Greetings.
when I was a kid (no internet times) we made bows with friend from sticks, it was fun :)
Raptor all my respect. I wish I you could be my teacher! Here in Argentina is incredibly difficult to find someone with experience in building bows. I've been looking for someone for the last years with no luck.
Did you ever get to start building bows?
@@user-mb4se6km5p I started but I had to stop doing it because I couldn't find anyone to teach me.
Your pocketknife can still be your most valuable possession, and you just have to get out there and have fun and your "childhood" will still be there
On yew I tend to leave the sap wood back with the heartwood belly , 1/3 rd sap to 2/3 rds heart, sapwood is good in tension and heartwood good in compression .
So beautiful...
Im working on making Viking bows on my channel here soon. You video has been very intresting.
thanks for the video
Great and what amazing wood!
Can't wait to make my 1st bow
Depending on the wood I use steam or boil the wood to shape for a deflex / reflex
best to sinew back to retain that shape or it may pull out from use
1) how long was stave seasoned for 2) what wood 3) would love to see more in depth on tillering
great video loved it
It’s yew wood
you are very welcome , glad you enjoyed it

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drawknife
Man, yew have serious skills
nOT AT THIS TIME , HAPPY TO HAVE YOU SIGN UP FOR A BOWBUILDING CLASS ON OUR WEB PAGE HOWEVER
Nice video
nice bow
So when you cut a part of a tree , you need to wait 3 years to dry and then start building the bow ?
Any kind of woodwork normally begins with a drying or seasoning time, _especially_ if the wood has been transported from one region to another. The wood you get from box stores has been dried too, but usually it's done in a kiln (badly). The result from _not_ drying is that as you work or when you finish the wood will warp and twist as the weather changes with the seasons.
I know the video is old but please wear safety glasses with steel on steel hammering. My friend caught a chip about half an inch from taking out his eye. I will admit his wedge was in bad shape but I hate to see those kinds of injuries. Especially with old school teachers. We need you guys to stick around.
Other than that, thanks for the video.
thought those wedges were super hot for a second!
good one!
Tools:
-Draw knife
-Spokeshave
Classic beauty. May I ask does one keep the top of the tree of the wood as the top of the bough of he bow? Would love to take your course but you are a bit far. Any fellow craftsmen or women in he U.K. you would recommend. Thank you for your clip.
thank you
only available at raptor archery web site
Yes you can , some early bows were made from limbs
I want to work for you. Dream job for sure!
thank you for the reply :)
how do you string the bow? like how do you get the bow to stick to the wooden part?
Hello! Great video! The use of sapwood instead of heartwood (at least so it seems) does obey a certain flexibility criterion?
where can I get some for that wood so I can make one
I was just looking for a weekend-week long project. There's a dead Aspen I haven't cut down...will that work?
wich is the best wood......soft wood(spruce) or hard wood like maple......tks.....nice vid
thanck you
yes
can you use a much thinner branch than that to start?
What are the names of the two tools you used? One was just a flat piece of metal and the other you used while tillering.
what are the tools you used called? cause iv'e made bows from silver birch, but i used wood chisels, a rasp, wood files and sand/glasspaper, but this takes a long time and it looks like the tools you used do a better job.
Thank you so much for your help! any idea where i can get one of those draw knives you used to "debark" the stave?
what about a recurve?
He says it in the video, Pacific Yew.
What was the name of the tool he used to shave the wood?
Bryan Board A draw knife
and the one at the end that removed less wood was a spokeshave I believe
Feel free to email me at the store , happy to help you out , happy to come to Argentina as well but thats a long drive.
hey, quick question. i am getting into bow making. how do you get a reflex deflex from a straight stave? i think i have some idea, but i better take it from an expert.
Thanks, SS2
This is wonderful, I would like to learn to do this slowly. But I have two questions =
1. Does the draw knife need to be exceptionally razor sharp, like woodworking chisels for example ?
2. Can I use an electric wheel to shape it very roughly, before the draw knife ?
I mean go from axe --> to electric wheel --> to draw knife
1 no but it is very subjective, it depends on the wood and the phase you're at , for chasing a ring some prefer a dull blade so as not to skip and violate the ring that would be your back, this is only relevant if you work with wood that require you to chase the ring , osage, locust, etc.. white wood does not need that ,
you remove the sapwood and you 're done
2 you can use power tools but where's the fun in that ? totally up to you
3 YEARS?!?! i was hoping 3 WEEKS
How do you dry wood with out it splitting? I've tried it and it always slits on me.
Can you make me one of those bows?
I wanna make my own recurve bow.
I made a mini bow out of laburnum wood today its seem a perfect wood
I live on the Navajo reservation how can I order some of your Staves
You bet!
you have a store.
I would come if i could
What is the cost of this bow?? All cost with image. Please. And where is ur shop.
from what is string made off?
Sorry, i'm from mexico, and i don't know all the english, can you sayme the names of trees than i can use to make a bows ??? Please, 🙇
The first is known as a draw knife the second is a rasp
what kind of wood is this bow
What size draw knife is that?
what kind of wood is that?
Where did u get the wood
So, I came here because I made a bow in the summer and it "bowed" a little bit. I think it is because I brought it to my godmoms house to store and my room gets really hot even though i tried to store it in the closet. Is there any way to "unbow" it? I dont keep the bow strung. However, I was curious if stringing it for a day would correct the "bowing" because it bends slightly the opposite way that it should when it is strung. If that makes any sense whatsoever. Please ask me questions if im not clear. Thanks.
lol.. :p I know... my archery vocabulary is not very elaborate. lol
Did you season the wood before making the bow?
+Ashley Burch if it bent away from you that could actually be a good thing , if it bent toward you, you just lost some performance
whatever it was you never store a wooden bow in a closet standing up
It is a good thing for a bow to bend away from you when it is unstrung. You are very lucky if a bow you made did that on its own. Most bows do the opposite, they take 'set' and don't fire as good as when they were brand new.
What type of wood could be used in Australia?
If you can wait long enough spotted gum will work but it’s so hard to work!
How much for a dried stave?
What type of wood is that?
Qual o nome desta madeira,
obrigado ..
where do you get your wood?
What kind of tree is it?
which kind tree?
question? what kinda wood is the best for bow making? thank you
Yew
can you use bodark? if so how well does it do?
I don't know if you've found an answer to your question yet, but my understanding is that "bodark" is a corruption of "bois d'arc," french for "bow wood" if that helps.
What wood should I use for a self recurve bow?
+Miles Chowaniec Yew or Osage.
what was the name of wood
Can i make a bow and then dry it ?
i just decided to make archer with wood because pvc cant last long... and i dont know wood can last long... but i just decided
I have found that steam works best for Yew
What's the name of the tool he's using to carve the wood?
+CZcams Speedruns That is called a drawknife
are thay for sale ?
