    BAKU - Throughout its history, Poland has struggled against foreign incursions. As such, the extent of its power shifted enormously. In the 17th century, the country prevailed as a major power in Eastern Europe. Yet, by the end of the 18th century, it had completely disappeared from the map. Poland survived only in memory and language before it emerged again a century later.
    This experience of national disasters has shaped the Polish mindset with a sense of suspicion and anxiety. As such, policymakers in Warsaw are desperately searching for a global power that can guarantee the sovereignty of Poland. Subsequently, the security dilemma is also laying the groundwork for the country to emerge as a regional power.

      Getting into detalis, what is different here is there's no ideology in Russia right now. The image of occupation western forces is needed to persuade Russian people that all of the money spend on militarisation are crucial for defense. In reality, most of those money are going into official's pockets, they spend them in western countries for wealthy life, including Poland.
      If you will ask Russian men if they are interested in going to military, 90% will tell they are not and this is all bulshit and waste of time. Most of them don't want to fight for oligarch's interests.

      @kostam.1113 Před 6 lety +54

      All that propaganda about Poland being somehow ''annexed'' is simply bullshit.
      Polish borders made in 1945 are permanent since neither Germany or Russia are capable of ''annexing'' Poland.
      Nor do they have any intentions of doing so.
      Political and economic influence is another thing tho, and currently Poland is economic slave to Germany and EU and political tool of Washington.

      You have your version of history, that has nothing to do with facts. Saying that poles are "always pretending to be better" which is a pure assumption that shows that You are chauvinistic yourself. It was Lithuanian side that rejected Pilsudski's offer to recreate federation similar to Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was also Lithuania that broke all diplomatic ties with Poland till 1938, not the other way around. When it comes to "Żeligowski's Mutiny" it was not a war, it was actually Polish military operation that supposed to help Polish majority in southern Lithuania (German Census 1918 Poles at 58.0%, Lithuanians at 18.5%, Polish Census 1931 Poles at 65,9% Lithuanians at 0,9%) Lithuania destroyed over 500 years of brotherhood in the name of independence pursuit, witch they clearly had right to do, but in that situation it was obvious that cities with Polish majority like Vilnius or Grodno (over 60% Polish majority) will have to be part of Poland. Especially when it was Poland that defeated Soviet army in 1920.

    Poland as usual finds itself between a rock and a hard spot . It's obvious to me that it will have to do some clever long-term planning to forge the right alliances or else it will become a client-state of some larger power. What amazes me is that despite Poland's struggles throughout the ages, they've managed to retain their sovereignty and remain on the map. You've got to have the "fight" in your blood to accomplish this and that's why I've vowed to support them. I like fighters.

    • @Vitalis94
      @Vitalis94 Před 6 lety +37

      "Struggles throughout the ages". That's a stupid stereotype. Of 1000 years of Polish history, Poles struggled with their independence (or lacked it entirely) only in the last 3 centuries. Before that, Poland was often either a neutral power, or a regional giant, and a place where many people escaped too due to the religious tolerance. Jews, protestants, even Scots and Armenians.
      People seem to imagine that Poland was weak for the whole time, and that Germans are their ancient enemy, while Polish-German border was most peaceful border in whole of Europe for many centuries. Even relations with Russia weren't exactly bad all the time - it's only due to the relationship with Lithuania that Poland even focused on Russia at all. It's possible that without Polish-Lithuanian union, Poland would be focused primairly on the West.

    • @10hawell
      @10hawell Před 6 lety +7

      being a client state empire from the other side of the world like the USA is currently what Poland always dreamed of. As long as we are not attacked, we may not be a slave to the United States. And that we have common goals from the USA - stabilize eastern Europe under the dictation of the United States and destabilize Asia and keep Western Europe dependent on the US is an additional advantage. Vitalis Just to be directed to the west, it is not worth it for us after the German nobility murder Otto III because since then Germany does not care for Poland as a vassal, but for us to be conquered.

    • @matthewjackson9615
      @matthewjackson9615 Před 6 lety +16

      Bear in mind that the US is backing off the European continent and only maintains a relationship with Poland because it is to the advantage of the United States. Anyway, geopolitics is a complicated affair and,in my humble opinion, what really matters is whether or not a country can maintain its will to survive no matter the circumstances. It seems patently obvious to me that Poland has chosen and will continue to choose to survive no matter what.

    • @Quickshot0
      @Quickshot0 Před 6 lety +6

      Due to the current Presidency, the chance Western Europe will start down its own path is becoming ever greater. Basically because the USA is no longer being seen as a reliable nation by many there. And if they aren't reliable, then one has to look out for ones self.
      Recently also one of the large German tank producing companies combined with a French equivalent. And they recently released a new tank demonstrator with a German chassis and French turret. So this could indeed be a sign that they're starting orientate away in a more serious way.
      If that is the case, Poland might in the coming decade have to reconsider its geopolitical situation.

    2:47 It is completely absurd to say that Poland ever sought an alliance with the Soviets to guarantee its sovereignty. After WW2, Poland was occupied by the Soviets, who brought the new "Polish" government with them. It was a communist dictatorship of Soviet puppets, who could not "experiment" with any strategies. Otherwise they would end up like governments in Budapest in 1956 or Prague in 1968. To enter into an alliance, you need to be a sovereign state, and Poland wasn't.

That is far from claiming that Poland's destiny was being dictated by outside forces as that implies it was a puppet state. Silesia was originally Czech and conquered by Poland until 1320, Bohemia even had a Jagiellon King from Krakow. Does that mean Poland controlled Bohemia's Destiny? No.

By 1500 or so when it was a commonwealth was when you have similar borders to today, so 300 out of 500 years of its history as a proper country is fair to say most of its history has been dominated by outsiders.

      1) Poland's history is over 1000 years, not 500. It has been a state since 996 AD, At first a Duchy until 1025 when it became a Kingdom.
      2) The commonwealth did not exist in 1500
      3) 1500 is not when Poland started to have similar borders to today, that was in ~1000AD. By 1500 the borders were no longer like today. Its the exact opposite of what you said.
      4) "few", "grand", "slither", "proper" are vague, ambiguous, and objective. What is "proper", how much land exactly is "slither"? When it was founded it was bigger then modern Bulgaria, it was unified, and "grand" enough to invade its neighbors and fight off the the Holy Roman Empire's attempts to assimilate them like Czech/Bohemia

    I am Pole and I'am interested in geopolitics. . First of all Poland is an extremely important land due to its geographical location. Poland lies on the Central European lowland and that passes the main trade routes connecting Asia with Europe as well as potential directions of military attacks (both east to west, and west to the east) as there is no mountain ranges limiting projection of military power. We are as well gate from Rimmland to Heartland - areas described in the Mackinder concept, considered to be the father of contemporary geopolitics.
    Poland currently is on the crossroads and we have to answer the question. Do we want to integrate with German system (EU) or building something new with USA.
    Orienting ourselves on Germany, we provide somehow economic stability and integration with western Europe, however, in this way we lose the ability to decide about ourselves and we become the buffer zone of Germany, depriving ourselves of building our own core as it was in time of Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth were we have been more powerfull than our neighbours but what is more important Germany can't provide SECURITY for Poland as its army is weak, underfunded and can not face the danger of Russia. In another hand USA needs Poland as a wedge embedded between Russia and Germany to prevent them from cooperating. The US has sufficient military strength, in contrast to Germany, to guarantee Polish security and they support construction of Intermarium - Polish geopolitical project gathering Central European countries being some kind of successor of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, .as it was confirmed by President Trump, taking part in the first historic summit of the Intermarium countries in 2017. Previous government opted for EU and Polish-German cooperation but current one is clearly in favor of the USA and efforts are now being made that the USA supports Poland economically in the construction of this project. If the Intermarium will rise, it will have over 100 million people and access to 3 seas : Baltic, Black and Adriatic becoming the largest and most populous state in Europe after Russia. I have no idea why You did't mention Intermarium in this video as it is a MAIN topic among polish geopoliticians. The bosnian croat politicians, backed by Zagreb have managed to induce an artificial crisis, trough the Constitutional court, where we are not able to implement the results of the oncoming elections in October this year. No implementation means no government. No government means increasing the power of the separatist Serb entity of republic of srpska and the separatist regions where bosnian croats live. To all the Poles that are commenting about anti-Polish sentiments in Lithuania:
    I can assure you that this anti-Polish sentiment in Lithuania has changed a lot both on a social level and a political level.
    I am a Pole who was born and raised in Vilnius, in my early teens I did experience some "discrimination" (just some stupid nationalistic banter that never actually did much harm). Nowadays, both the media and the general atmosphere has changed A LOT. Both in schools and universities (I studied history in our main university, so I actually can comment about the "direction" of the educational system).
    To all my fellow Poles, don't get fixated about this so-called anti-Polish sentiment. The Poles in Lithuania are actually enjoying minority rights like no other minority in Europe. We have Polish schools, we have monuments built recently to Michał Kleofas Ogiński, a Polish film festival and many, many other things celebrating Polish culture. And even the media doesn't make a big deal when the Poles living in Vilnius celebrate major Polish events and put flowers on Piłsudski's heart's grave.
    We even celebrated 100 years of Polish independence on the main square in Vilnius with a polonez. This event was backed by the government.
    So please, forget the stupid comments made by fellow Lithuanians in the past decades. They have changed.
    The problem we are actually facing in the Polish community here is that some of the "Poles" living hear are actual "Russians" in denial. They speak a mongrelized version of "Polish" , have their heads filled Russian state media propaganda and haven't read a single Polish book in their life. Most of them haven't even been to Poland. Thankfully our Polish schools are fixing this problem, Poland is putting effort to promote the real culture more and things are getting better.

    Kudos. Accurate in most ways except that you have severely underestimated the United States response time to preserve Poland. You should review the overwhelming superiority of American air assets. And it's strategic lift capabilities. Then consider the American Stryker Brigade Combat Team . Ideally, a Stryker brigade should take only 96 hours to get into action, with an entire division being able to hit the ground 120 hours. This, while still being survivable and heavily armed enough to hold off medium enemy formations. And then, of course, you have three divisions of United States Marines. 72 hours for a MEU. 96 hours for a MEB. 120 hours for an entire Division.
    Now, you might consider, correctly, just how important Poland is to United States Foreign Policy in its ability to offset both Russia AND Germany. Current predictions of United States and Poland's relationship is that the United States will make Poland the Economic powerhouse in Eastern Europe, akin to what it built in South Korea. Precisely for the same reason.

This required the United States to provide, through a bi-lateral agreement, with Poland, the stationing of American Troops in Poland, and establishment of it's own bases there.

      transylvanian How about you quit talking out of your ass and explain why they should be abolished and why you think they are silly concepts. Go to school and learn something, without a country, nationality, culture, religion, you are a nobody, you have no identity.

    More about current politics than geopolitics, unfortunately. Could have said so much more about the history of fights for control of river systems, importance of crucial land choke points, soil fertility, trade routes past and present, crucial importance of creating a coordinated political body between the Baltic and the Black seas, which is at the core of Polish geopolitical aims since at least 14th century and so on. Great channel, lots of room for improvement. Keep it up!

    westerners love to slam Visegrad. but the situation can't be compared.
    e.g. my country, Sweden, has almost full control over Russian banking and telecommunications.
    Germany has the Czech mountains in the south and dense forests on the border with Poland. geographical defense.
    and most importantly: Western Europe hasn't been invaded by all of its neighbors several times during the last 100 years, unlike Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Croatia or Serbia.
    these nations have been destroyed several times during the last century. starting as part of the Austro-Hungarian empire under the Habsburgs, leading to non-existence during the war, to several wars and invasions ever since.
    it is better to compare this dilemma with nations in similar situations:
    Angola, Israel, Palestine, Chechnya, Armenia and Georgia.
    of course these nations are xenophobic.
    remember what a couple of thousand Bavarian workers did in Czechoslovakia after 70 years of migrating to the country? a country of 26 million lost about 10 million of its population during and after the war (due to genocide, mass-deportation and mass-emigration).
    Poland completely transformed geographically.
    do not forget that Czechoslovakia was allied with France and Poland with Britain.
    the Munich agreement should also tell you a story of how trustworthy the West European nations are.
    and lets not forget that the Soviets weren't equal allies.
    this union of Central European nations, which have been forced to be part of Eastern Europe do share the fear of foreigners due to history.
    the German immigrants murdered millions of Poles, Czechs and Slovaks during the war.
    are you so surprised by the reaction of Poles, Czechs, Slovaks and Hungarians to the refugee crisis?
    add to that, assholes that blow themselves up and run trucks through the crowds of people.
    and lets not forget the tragedy of Kosovo: a region within Serbia, which was full of refugee camps after the war.
    ending with a bloody civil war just 50 years later.
    immigration can cause issues for the existing population. Kosovo, Czechoslovakia and Israel are prime examples...
    we may not agree with the strategies of these 4 nations, but stop being a typical western cunt and understand the issue. the world you live in, where your existence is guaranteed, isn't shared by all nations.

    Poland should create a Eastern European economic alliance with the Ukraine and the Baltic states

      There are 2 key problems:
      1. Lithuanians don't like Poles, because of the inferiority complex over the Polish-Lithuanian era & interwar period with supposed assimilation of Lithuanian folk by the Polish nobles and "stealing Lithuanian capitol - Wilno" in 1919, with Poles being majority of the city.
      2. Poles have problem with Ukrainians portrating anti-German & anti-Soviet Ukrainian Insurgent Army (who were responsible for (massacre) of 100.000 Polish citizens during 1943) as heroes.

    You could do one about Uruguay, it was a similar situation to Poland that ended up in it becoming an independent state separate from Argentina and Brazil.

    • @oliverreads1536

      To be slightly more constructive... Uruguay would need to integrate itself into it's bigger neighbor's economies better than now (via infrastructure and education) and rely less on resources and farming for its economic engine. It needs to focus on a strict, focused education to help it shift into more advanced business and tech reliant industries. Poland maintained a high standard of education even during poverty-stricken Communist oppression, so it stands that others should be able to if they prioritize it. It would also need to attract international investment but that is tougher if there is little geopolitical interest in the area unless China wants a foothold...

      Uruguay should be independent, if its people want it, saying that a country must join one of its neighbors is a spit in the face of many nations. It is like saying that Benelux is to join either Germany or France, Slovakia - Czech Republic or Poland, Poland - Germany or Russia. How dare you dictate to whom it have to join because you do not like it on the map and you want to do space filling empire. Greetings from Poland to Uruguay, stay Independent long history is ahead of you, may it not be as painful as ours.

    Shirvan, you really ought to do a geopolitics of the EU (or at least the inner european bloc meaning Germany, France and Benelux). You may be skeptical concerning the longterm survivability of the Union, but as long as its existence continues, it will be confronted with unique geopolitical questions that transcend those of any single memberstate, for some of which the Unions existence is crucial e.g. Germany and France. I definetely felt that european geopolitics was a missing piece in your Germany video because of this.
