  • NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Vee Jay 689-B) Out of Los Angeles, this disc recorded on Apri 30, 1965 and released in June that year, it is the first of two singles issued by Miss Marx on the Vee Jay label. A pretty decent double sider with the A-side entitled 'What', a Northern Soul favorite. Daughter of Groucho Marx, Melinda performed her two Vee Jay singles with plenty of Television exposure on 'Shindig!', 'Shivaree' and 'Hollywood Palace' to name a few in order to promote them but neither saw any chart action.
Link to the 'Shivaree' TV performance.....

You can't help but to Love Melinda Marx. She is as Beautiful as her dad was Funny. And what a Great Voice! Can't believe I only just recently discovered Melinda Marx right after my 63rd birthday, after all these years! I love every video and audio I can find of Melinda - from when she first appeared on her dad's TV show - You Bet Your Life as an adorable and very talented young girl. I especially love her performance on You Bet Your Life - where she sang Witch Doctor - what a Great Performance!

Brings Petula Clark to mind, too. She never wanted to be in the entertainment business, though, and left it as soon as she could.

She's definitely going for a Dionne Warwicke/Burt Bacharach vibe here. It sort of sounds like "This Empty Place" in a major key.

I stumbled upon this song sojourning through the vast maze of you tube music...and it has risen to the top of my personal charts, where it has remained steady in my Top 40 for over a year now. The bridge is an homage to Edda del Orso and the melodic swirls of a Morricone composition. I truly believe this melody is timeless and whenever a film or some social media format finally uses this song for soundtrack...then it will maybe gets its just popular merit. Congrats Melinda for putting your contributions into making this song one of my personal favorites.

Yeah, definitely a Dionne Warwick/Bacharach groove here. And the lyrics "why does love just pass me by" are suspiciously similar to "Walk On By." Not bad, though. I would have guessed this was the A-side.

Vee-Jay Records soon went belly-up not long after this was released.

If her last name wasn't Marx she'd have had to settle for singing in the shower. Vocals are not bad but nothing to write home about. Songs themselves are mediocre at best. With good material (thinking of somebody like Gary Lewis) almost any celebrity's kid can be a star. Just a humble opinion.
