History Of The Bay: Tie One

- Jonathan Lim aka Tie is one of the most well-known graffiti writers in the world, made infamous by his death at only 18 years old. During his brief lifetime, he was respected from San Francisco to New York as one of the most prolific bombers ever. Tie was also known for his kind spirit, informed by his Buddhist principles and his unmatched love for graffiti. Sadly, in 1998, he was gunned down while attempting to paint on a rooftop. No charges were ever filed against his killer. But Tie's legacy lives on and he continues to be loved and revered to this day.
This is a compilation of one-minute clips I created for social media. Since making these, many of Tie's friends have reached out to me, shared more stories about his life, and corrected some of the things I misstated in these videos. So I decided to do a longer breakdown as a continued tribute to this legendary artist.

He also wrote "HIS" and that photo of him in Stockton is at a graff shop that was operated by Neckface's family.

Wow neckface, how far does he go back any docos on him lemme know homie he's my all time fav but can't see much documented on him besides baker haha
The influence is still felt to this day, RIP TIE
Tie was a true king and a beautiful soul. I met Tie at the rock steady anniversary in hunts point. This was the place to be in nyc 1996 and 97. I met so many prolific Writers and hiphop artists, breakers everyone was there.Tie was the funniest cat I met that weekend he plopped down on the ground dumped out a pile of markers and started crushin blackbooks with his animals. after that weekend and still to this day he has crazy floater spots all over soho( he was tiny dude but he made use of trucks parked in lots that later moved revealing his tactic.) Funny, kind, gentle, and a graff beast, his legacy lives on in the heart and soul of many writers West and East coast.
I’m not even from the Bay Area and I heard about Tie when I first started writing. True legend man! RIP!!!!
I went to elementary school with Jonathan, we went to Scott Lane in Santa Clara, when we got to middle school (Buchser, early 90’s) that’s when he started tagging. He started writing “Scar”, then “Scab”. He ran with “Skor” from “BCS”. I think he might’ve gave him the name “Scar”!? He has an older Brother named Alexander, that was in my older cousins grade. In the mid 90’s his family owned a bakery in Santa Clara in the old Fairway Glen Plaza. He bombed the fuck out of that neighborhood in Santa Clara where his family owned the bakery. He was dedicated to the graffiti lifestyle. He would go racking cans any and every where! I remember he went to Kmart or a hardware store with a duffel bag, no fucks given and filled it up with spray paint and walk out! I remember one night we went writing and there was a bum sleeping at a bus bench and he tagged on him. He was ruthless! RIP my dude!
BCS bustin crazy styles, bombing city buses,
BIG FACT!! I'm from santa clara main street! He introduced my brother to his wife at Buchser middle school. He used to knock on my door at 5 am to get my brother to do graffiti before school 😂
What a cowardly & heartless act by Porter. I feel for the family who saw no justice for the loss of a loved one at such a young age. Thank you for sharing his story.
Seriously man. It made me sick in my stomach then and it does now and always will. They literally let that guy murder a kid in cold blood and get away with it.
Rocking my TIE shirt right now with the 4slap design of that sticker you held up in the frame- long live the legend
we need more people in the world like you bro. big ups on this video and RIP SEO
Tie definitely lived in Stockton in the 90's, tie was writing Sesk when he was in Stockton pushing the Reds crew. He linked up with Teez RTC JOA who was up the most in Stockton and the two of them together were wild. From bombing missions to racking paint they did it all together. We would all be kicking it at Bomb Threat a hip hop shop that was in Stockton at the time on the weekends and after many of those missions I will always remember how crazy they sounded but he would always say " Ask Teez, ask Teez"......the last time I saw Tie was on March 6th 1996 in San Jose randomly walking out of a KFC on my way to see Cypress Hill, the first thing he asked is if was getting up, I said yes and he took a stack of stickers from me....and walked off. A little over 2 years later I was going to school in San Francisco when Tie was was killed......RIP
Reds Crew Sesc is when i met him. I use to write Adept at the time and was in reds with Ave, Berp, and others prior to getting into olds crew the later into bcs in '95. I was reds twice once when Loops (Danny) was leader then again when Avenue had it. Sesc was in when Ave had it. What did your write back then?
Respect
Thanks for shouting out some deep Stockton history. S/O MAZON.
Berp was Skor! I remember riding the bus VTA 60 and I seen Skor and Taboo from TPK getting up on the back of the bus. two white guys!@@xenos975

Thank you for this eloquent and moving tribute to TIE. I've never been to S.F but if I ever make it I'll be thinking of TIE x. From Essex, Uk.
I was good friends with TIE. He told MQ that they had to wear suits when they went to my 1st album release party at Maritime. You should really hollar at Site FTL CMA, who was pretty much his patron. Everybody talks about painting with Tie and what he would do, but Site is who he went home to, made him stop and eat and take care of himself when they are not painting. He was a weird kid and a pure soul. RIP TIE
I have issues that FTL could help w/ were I in your state. We don't really have much of that in DEEP S. TX. I also write all over, 13 states in the last 10 years plus add over half that many down in Mexico. Just saying I can relate a little. I had to look up your acronyms, but I get it. When that creative flame burns, it burns bright and there ain't no regulator on that particular torch.

@@captainpeanutter do your homework homie, your boys been official as a ref with a whistle

I remember seeing the segment about TIE in the Piece by Piece documentary from way back... they had a lot of good things to say about him.
This series is so good. Can’t wait to see more.
Thanks for the upload Dregs! Nothing but respect brother! 👍👊
When I was about 15 years younger I first watched Piece by Piece on PBS. To this day his story stuck with me and in a round-about way inspired me to get up there
RIP
My knowledge of graf isn't big but I appreciate the artists and work. My cousin Sotoa Lavatai was tagging Phrie 1 (I believe that's correct) in Frisco back in the 90's. My grandfather had houses in Daly City and Sotoa passed away very young in 1998. This video was cool to watch and educate. 👏
Great video. Appreciated the balance of history and analysis. Thank you.
RIP TIE Big up from Sweden!
Tie loves u for this... ty! ♡ well researched. So many thoughts coming to my head... hard to express so just ty again. Shae Shae.
Well done Dregs. There is a philosophical nuanced discussion you could have about graffiti. But for an 18 year old to be murdered in cold blood, there’s no justification for that. Anyways, there’s a handful of writers who revolutionized graffiti styles. Tie was undoubtedly one of them. His work has inspired me and so many others around the world and that legacy will never die.
Flawless interpretation, RIP TIE ONE you may be gone but never forgotten. ✌️ #STOP ASIAN HATE
Really intuitive and all around take on graffiti and Tie himself. Like you mentioned, anyone with that much drive is inevitably going to excel in their craft, as Tie did...
Great video, look forward to seeing more...
This is great! I grew up in NJ/NYC area and (to me) PK KID is the most prolific Bombers that have stayed anonymous
Hell yeah great upload Dregs! Rip to the legend TIE
RIP TIE,SEO T2B,REDS you're graffiti will live FOREVER and legends never die. You inspired me into graffiti when I saw you back in Santa Clara when I was a young teenager.

Rip #tie #seo … when he came to nyc he linked up with setup and my good friend mega t2b and he crushed shit. Some stuff still running in nyc and Brooklyn..
How or why he go to NYc if he was probably not even 18 ? Or how he link up with your crew with no social media ? Like irak ??

Thanks for the reference. RIP TIE aka SEO. Shout out to MEGA T2B
It’s tragic that this young man was killed over graffiti. Graffiti is fun and exciting, but it’s a dangerous hobby. RIP TIE.
Legend I remember hearing about that vigilante shit smh.
Peace to him. I got a sticker of his (posthumously) when I ordered a book from VEC4 & Sacha Jenkins in 2024.

Damn the same day my life started, his ended. That's unfortunate, he was talented 💯
Dope
just knowing how much passion he had for graffiti it REALLY sucks he never got to live to his full potential , imagine if he got out of graffiti and dedicated that to his adult life .... he would of gone SO FAR... REST IN PAINT FOREVER TIE!!
thumbs up. gotta go all in
Can you make videos about the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, the Bullet Proof Scratch Hamsters, Style Elements bboy crew and Media Sirkus, aka Demons of the Mind?
wild to think that all these writers just happen to know everyone like you could show some old writer a random guy or legends tag n he could say he knows or knew him
That's the shitty thing about the west/ bay area. Its foreal killing fields. As a writer on the west it's rough. I've been hit up by gangs and shit like that. People don't understand how tough it is being a writer out here. Shit even writers and shooting and shit. I never knew dude but I hope his people have gotten their closure and are with him forever.
Thank you for putting it out there respect 🙏🏽
Make a video about SiN1 DWB!

The Philippines is a diverse country with a signiticant Chinese community including Filipinos of Chinese descent. In fact they are one of the largest ethnic minority group if not South Asians and Koreans.
Also, Tie’s style is highly influenced by Twist. In fact Os Gemeos from Brazil are have that Twist influence.
RIP Tie

We need a Girafa episode
Graffing in the streets has no protection ~ every time you go out consider the risk
Also do one on Lords Crew man
Yeah on Des aka Zike would be the shit.
Wait last 2 requests, do one on Optimist POP! And do one on Plant Trees! Or shit dude Giraffa!
People value property more than life... and that shit make my heart hurt...
There's a grip of mentally ill folk out there running around... thinking it's OK to kill... a kid no less. 💔
If he was still here he would’ve been a beast at what he was doing!
Shoot I tried graffiti back in 93-94 in high school I needed more style work but loved doing pieces on sketch books back then. And that’s where it stayed but I hung out with lower tier crews like ufo I met fund once and looked out on market street while he got up a piece but that’s it. I was focused on sports. Never knew about tie but I love the content and find myself back doing art pieces on paper again. Accounts like yours reignites the love for the art so salutes. RIP TIE never knew the story and SFPD pffft these guys been racist. Exposed a few years ago. Robert Porter is a murderer.
I’m 27 so way before my time but in the 90s Stockton had legal walls and I. Believe if you google a picture of him where hes kinda like a fence and wall if that makes sense is here in Stockton , shit sparked lil a fuse in me when I seen you cover him on your ig
That pic is at our old graff shop “Bomb Threat “ 1994….it was on Main Street…he used to stay in Stockton with “Teez” a og bomber who taught Tie a lot about bombing….he was writing Sesk Reds crew at that time..
@@mazoner damn thats dope , thanks for letting me know more about that pic 💯💯💯
@@mazoner "ask teez ask teez" I can still hear that fool saying that shit after they would go rack paint....lol
