We thought it would be fun to build the world’s smallest gas-powered V8 engine. We were wrong.
Huge thanks to our friend Matt from Warped Perception for helping us out on this one. Make sure to watch his video on this horrible engine.
Also, huge thanks to Pacific Coast Hobbies for the countless hours spent troubleshooting this with us.

Yeah I'm not going to support betting. That industry has absolutely fucked over parts of my extended family.
Next up please turbo the little engine!
You must!! Talk to jhony q90!!!
After watching Johnny VQ90 it looks like the timing was off when it was put together.
These things are tough, a real pain in the a**, sounds like a timing issue. But my anxiety is at 500% just watching you guys trying to get it started... I have small engine PTSD rn.
Wussup bro, love your videos.
@@MyAutomotiveChannel thank you, unfortunately just like the donut guys I'm dealing with engine troubles rn...lbvs.
@@WarpedPerceptionRIP, good luck with that...
When is the Koehler getting into the Tesla?
@@MyAutomotiveChannel thx, I decided to rebuild the engine right in the middle of filming another crazier jet GoKart project, all of the head bolts broke in the engine block, I milled everyone out with relative ease, except the last one which has been an absolute nightmare. Hopefully today I'll have a better day.
Funny how a tiny V8 ended up being Donut's kryptonite.
EJs: am I joke to you?
It's still residue karma from the subi's...
@@ianvisser7899 lmao. Great comment.
@@mattockmodelsthey did it to themselves
Have you seen them try to turbo the Z's
Let's just say sometimes I wonder who taught them how to work on cars an if they are even mechanics
Not going to lie I’m a mechanic my self and to see 8 grown man in a circle trying to start an engine the size of a mason jar and genuinely having a hard time makes me proud to be a mechanic the love for this art is much more then just a job ! If you enjoy it you understand! And I’m not down sizing the frustration cause the same things can Happen with big engines… kindaaa 😂 looking forward to seeing you guys succeed!!
Any recommendations on how to build a good foundation of knowledge without formal training?
I'm trying to work on learning a bit but Im pretty green.
@@nhdoom8368 go be it man😊
@@nhdoom8368CZcams channel "driving 4 answers" (@d4a) has good videos about this.
@@nhdoom8368as someone whose learned to work on cars informally, great place to start is just doing your own maintenance. Oil changes, filter changes, spark plugs, rotating tires, are usually simple things anyone can do on their car. I say usually because there are exceptions where some cars are more difficult than others. Once you can do basic maintenance move up into brakes and suspension if you feel comfortable. A cheap project car like a Honda civic or old pickup truck is the next step up. Something easy to work on with cheap and available parts. Also harbor freight is the best place for 99% of your tools. My rule of thumb is if I use a tool enough to break it or hate it then it’s worth investing in something nicer.
Really good advice@@korytoracing
10 months boys, I’m not expecting the impossible but we want to see you re-engage a difficult problem and overcome it together.
Teach them young boys what struggle really looks like.
Johny Q90 is your man. He not only got them running but actually figured out the spark plugs and has built every single Toyan engine.
I don’t think anybody is running any of the toyan engines on spark, he got the one 32cc engine to run on spark
*YUP*
took the words out of my mouth
Johny Q90 ftw!
Literally read my mind
Honestly, Nolan is such a gem for handling all these complex situations at work on camera and still being pleasant.
We’ve found the President of Nolan’s fan club
All in for that model you could probably buy an old clunker or a bike. And actually drive it...
Nolan: "$1000 is too much for an RC car."
Also Nolan: "hehe $1600 mini V8 go brrrrrr"
Is he? He whines and swears like a petulant child the second anything goes wrong.
@@theend1555 why are you watching donut then?
I think it was really bold of you to go ahead and post a video of you failing at some thing you worked really hard on. I like it. It feels real.
Yes where are the women?
What does that mean
I’m actually waiting on Part 2 of this! Haha. Loved this!
Same here!
Same
@@budadi Same...

Same I keep checking
You should call johnnyQ90. He has a collection of these engines. He even custom made parts for his RC cars. Talented AF.
Was about to say the same thing. Johnny is the king.
Agreed
Also came here to mention johnnyQ90
When they said the nuclear option I thought of JohnnyQ90 first LOL
This is exactly who I thought they would hit up.. Then ask for a mini turbo cuz Mo Powa Baby!
Nolan's suffering can no longer be contained within just one video anymore.
PLEASE COME BACK TO THIS 😭 and when (because I know you guys can do it) you do get it working put it in a go cart or something, Like so they’ll see
6 months out…think we should get that vid Nolan promised shouldn’t we?
I love how the graphic artist created the orientation of the spark plugs at the 6:58 mark.
I was looking for this comment 😂
Ha! Sure enough, looks like someone was a little confused!
And the “short block” in the picture of all the parts that came in the kit.
lmfao
i saw that too. knew there would be comments about this
I love watching these engines build on JohnnyQ90 and now it’s cool to see them on donut
they should have called him. I'm pretty sure Johnny could have started it in his sleep.
Johnny Q90 built this in a cave out of a box of scraps
I really hope that you guys end up getting this thing running! Super badass
Good effort boys always fun to see what you guys come up with and what I can learn
“If there’s one thing we can do here at donut, it’s kinda solve problems”
You have no idea how much I felt that one 😂
I really thought JohnnyQ90 was gonna be the nuclear option, both times. 😂 Would be cool to see him come help the boys.
I was thinking the same thing
I have a feeling that JohnyQ90 lives in Greece (if I am not mistaken) and doesn't really speak in their videos, so although they would be the ideal choice, IRL things might have made it difficult to collab.
Same. That dude is GOOD. Making his own transmissions an stuff.
@@loathingkernel6537 great point! I hadn't considered that!
After building the non running motor I thought for sure the Toyan motor would be as easy step up from that. But after watching your video, now I now to wait before jumping into that swamp.
It's so dope to see how far these guys have come from the beggining of the Channel. They basically have a Car Fantasy Factory now hahaha.
Johnnyq90 put this in a car and built a supercharger for it that worked, shout out to Johnnyq90
Beat me to it. 😀
Didn't he dyno it and it made less power with a supercharger?
Yeap
@@Chester200100 he did! Parasitic losses are real bad when you are working so small.
@@Chester200100 he still built a super charger for it though!
Imagine the spark plugs being upside down @ 6:57
Nice, didn't catch that 😂
A few years back I worked as an editor/journalist for a major motorcycle publication and multimedia company, and during a meeting with the brand manager for said company (the guy who was in charge of about 13 different motorsports related publications), we actually had to explain to him how spark plugs functioned and what they looked like after he couldn't draw one from memory. My buddy in the chair next to me literally had one tattooed on his chest. Probably a reason that company eventually tanked with that self-proclaimed motorsports enthusiast at the helm...
I saw that to
Wtf haha
Thank god I wasn’t the only one who saw that 😂
14:26 I've never seen Nolan so fired up! He's going to get this thing running for sure. Eventually.
Shoutout to Nolan for all the amazing work he had done recently!
I'm so proud of him

Can't wait for this to turn into a 10 episode series tbh
This is the new money pit lmao
Modern-day Band of Brothers
I loved watching this. Everytime I see guys like you working on RC cars that probably shouldn't happen I think of my old rc. A car I had when I was a kid but I still have it, and want to beef it up, or make a new proper one based on it
JohnnyQ90 is your guy when it comes to these microscopic engines.
I love how donut makes their ads very entertaining and they also give you a bar to see how long you have until it’s over, because of that I watch the whole thing. Least I can do for such a highly produced piece of entertainment. Thank you donut!
They are pushing a gambling website. Total sell outs.
losing respect for them bc it's a gambling ad, and this channel is very clearly marketed for a young-ish audience
14:09 love the music choice
I admire the persistence of everyone at Donut
I love watching Donut's content cause 80% of their content is the struggle they face. Ain't like these other content creators that is all easy fix and smooth sailing.
Yo thats so fax
Probably required a lot of custom machined parts like the way Johnny did but if you guys were able to build a multi rotor (2+) powered rc that would be awesome
They sell a mini single and 2-rotor engine on the same site that you get the Toyan V8. Actually a lot of cool mini engines on their site.
@@Blaquer17 I just wish they weren’t so expensive toyans a cool company
I don’t think Johnny machined anything
@@benjaminwatson7868 you clearly have not watched a single one of that guy's videos
@@beaverman285 im talking about for this engine specifically he's machined engine mounts a couple of intakes, his designs are almost always faulty and never really perfectly thought through, they do look great though
johnnyQ90 seems like an expert at tiny nitro engines.
Hi Guys. I just started and ran my toyan motor. This is what I learned. First check the carb settings, buy the ignition module for it, use at least a 3s for the starter. Plz have a go at it again loved that vid.
Best of luck
Took me about an hour to get mine started for the review on our channel. It was a glow/ electrical issue. All plugs have to be constantly lit. My power, a 3S LiPo pack, was going through the factory wiring setup but two wires weren’t making perfect contact with the glow plugs. Once I fixed that, it fired on 25% Nitro Hobby fuel. Theo from PCH is the man, he probably threw every trick at it. My only guess would be try starting it with the carbs about 1/4 open then pinch the fuel line a two-three seconds after starting, this will lean it out and hopefully show if your carb setting is too rich. Looks like you had a ton of fuel dumping out. Also, it was hard to see, but those may not be the right plugs. There should be a 2mm shank beyond the bottom of the threads of the plug. It’s a Type-F plug for 4-strokes. Good luck!
Love this format with the voice overs and the cutaways and the diagrams. Very streamlined and professional.
6:55 😂
Ugh scale makes a crazy diff man, thanks for hanging in there and giving us a great vid! Cant wait to see the progress
Patience is a virtue my friend... something that complex takes knowledge, skill, and ability
I'm certainly not an expert on these model engines but I've known people who ran them on gas with spark plugs and needed to add an encoder disk to the rotation of the crank with a sensor to read it in order to properly time the engine, not sure if you've tried that already or not! As a bonus the encoder can be used to read out your RPM like a tach
Johnny Q90 is amazing with these engines
Thank you for posting your journey. It didn't matter that you failed, because you tried
The quality of your videos are just amazing
I’ve always thought about how much I would love to be part of Donut.
But when I watch these videos it reminds me my knowledge mechanically is very limited compared to these guys. I’d be the guy bringing the snacks while they do the work 😂💀
Or you could be a writer or a film guy. You don't have to be on the screen.
Hey catering is as important as any mechanic, engineer or driver on every racing team! After a long career as all of the above in motorsports including at least two dozen endurance races from 6-24 hrs I’m here to say teams run and win on the catering crew! Nothing better than a bowl of chicken noodle soup at 2 am on a cool fall evening at Mosport or a plate of pasta for dinner at Mid Ohio.
I applied when they were looking for a host, thinking, I know quite a bit about cars, I keep 3 beater POS's running in my spare time. Despite having been watching donut for a while, I still thought, yeah I could do that. Lol, I absolutely cannot and I think they found a diamond in Justin. The whole crew is fantastic.
Or, you know, learn things
Would still be fun af to just be there
JohnnyQ90 makes it look easy lol.
11:41 The Joseph OH NOOOO really got me bruv 😂

@@Mrbukko i was about to whistle-blow so hard lol

JohnnyQ90 has several of these and he supercharged one of them. They all run.

Good video guys.
Who put the spark plugs upside down in the graphic at 6:58? 😂 That was too funny. Love these little engines.
I'm loving Nolan's RC adventures!
I love when Nolan says, "My loved ones" his cat pops up
Man I hope they make another one of these, I really enjoyed it.
Great to see so much new rc content across my fav full size car channels. These motors are temperamental at best. Pull the valve covers off and make sure valve timing is correct and valves are doing what they should be. Make sure the crank and cam are timed. From memory it's both dots pointing down not towards each other like a full size engine. Other than that, they do make a great paperweight :D
I love the upside down spark plugs in the animations 😂 7:03
The effort just for this tiny engine is crazy
Donuts entire channel is pretty much an example of perseverance and not giving up.
But they did give up
I hope you're being sarcastic. They just have other CZcamsrs come visit & fix they're junk.
Real Top Gear/automotive journalist style.
But a prime example would be Alex of 2stroke stuffing
So tiny cars are pain too? Good to know 😂
Love the video and all the effort you all put into it. It’s actually cool to see a video where it doesn’t work out, just like how some builds don’t work out for normal people. Looking forward to seeing this thing run!
I built a $500 dollar v8 , 32 valve twin cam engine that runs on the starter motor. I loved it. I got to assemble the connecting rods to the pistons. The valve springs and other parts like that. It doesn't run on fuel, but it was super fun to build and all the parts (after being well lubricated) rotate and move as they should. IN the end it was like a short block engine that just needs a few more parts to make it a race car engine....
I love your entertaining videos. One tiny thing in this video especially. The upside down sparking plugs at 6:55
JohnnyQ90 has a vid on that same engine, and he did a really good job you should give it a watch then revisit this!
If they did like 20 minutes more of research they would have found Johnny. Just asking Warped isn't enough. For me I wouldn't want to blow almost two grand by winging it.
It's refreshing to see a video about all of the failures, and showing that it's okay to fail. Looking forward to the video showing how you got it running.
Gotta love that yellow bar
The lego sound effects when they started were so great 😂😂

I’m looking forward to part two! Really pulling for you guys to get it going
@Nolan so tempted to buy one of those engines and try it myself. So tempted. $1600? A little less tempted. And it didn't work so . . . definitely less tempted but you've got one so I'll support you in spirit. Go Donut GO!
y'all really need to do part 2 on this
and brung back hi-lo like what are you doing homie

Please dont give up on this project. I am looking forward to part 2 of this mini engine and how you guys get it to run on a frame.
This would have been an awesome 2 to 3 part series ... this is awesome to watch. I heard there's bigger models like this that can power those like jeeps for kids those 12v ones.
There’s something a bit weird about the spark plugs in the animation at 7:00 😂
Keep up the good work, let’s get that thing running!
Should have got a guy that builds and Flys RC glow/ gas planes. I've built so many glow/ tiny gas motors I can't even count them, including brands like cox, Saito, O.S. , Evolution, eagle and probably a few other I'm forgetting. The spark isn't to hard, if it's glow you just use glow plugs which are a piece of cake. If you use spark you usually have a little ignition box with timing on the flywheel or the cam gear. I've seen gas set ups with radials with over 8 cylinders that run great! Just takes time and patience... alot of patience! You think adjusting timing and fuel mixture on the ground is hard... imagine trying to do all that while the engine is pulling several G's and up in a thinner atmosphere! You have to take all that into account and do several take off's and landings to get it tuned just in the ball park
You should contact the dude from the CZcams channel "Let's Learn Something Today"! That guy can fix/make anything!!
Jobes face at 10:36 🤣🤣
"Did it try to run" like a clueless puppy, Adorable
I’ve seen these so much and have wanted one and I’m so happy donut is doing a video cause now I’ll know if it’s worth it thanks to them❤

I love it that they said that they are not giving up but it has been 6 months. I give you credit for trying I would just leave it on my desk
10 months now.
Should have watched johnnyq90s video on this engine he's built plenty of them
I like how a tiny project become a huge project with everyone dragged into it
Valve timing guys ,if the valves are not closed on the compression stroke it won't fire. If it's 2 stroke ignore the former. As far as a gas rig goes there is normally a small magnet on the flywheel. There should be a small pickup installed to sense the magnet . The ignition box works out what to fire when or it uses wasted spark method.. also you need a reciever hooked to the ignition box to recieve signal the switch on the radio you programed it to is on.
we want to see this again!
JohnnyQ90 is a youtube channel that specializes on these types of engines. Maybe check his videos
No that’s huge and I’m sure it’s personality is great too
ITS BEEN 8 MOTHS
I was thinking about the ignition system problem and you guys can use a Arduino to control 8 relays that gives the sparks for the engine, and that can be timed and programed with the arduino, the issue is discover the timing and wiring everything because the Arduino works with 5V.
