- I've been wanting to restore an old, rusty barbell for quite some time and this is the perfect candidate. A 20+ year old Mac Barbell Texas Power Bar that was hardly used but left in the back of a shed for many years. The restoration was hard for me to believe, and likely will be for you as well!

What should we restore next? Plates? Dumbbells? Your $.10 squat? 😁
Rower or Air bike!
Dumbbells
an old weight bench
Plates for sure
How did you get your hands on the barbell did you pay or was it just passed on to you?
I just bought a bar that looks just like that one for $40 today and it had 2 plates on it. The ends spin free and smooth still. Talk about a score 🤑🤑💯💯
nice dude
What a score
You can find bars for 40 - 60 bucks all day
@@bobdole7292 not with 2 plates
How much are plates? I have some rusted 5, 10, 25, 45 plates I want to get rid of. What would be a fair price?
If you want to make a quick, cheap tub for this restoration, buy a length of 4" PVC pipe, glue endcaps on it and then cut the whole thing lengthwise using a tablesaw or bandsaw. Then you don't have to worry about a leak soaking through your cardboard box.
Great ideas , thanks
That's what I do, but I leave the pvc intact without cutting it. When I am done, I just empty it out on a patch of dirt. I only have one end capped, the other I put a bag with duct tape.
I was wondering bout that king box, where wood I find won, Thxz for the tip G🙂
Good idea
One of the coolest videos you’ve done! Keep it up, Coop!
Mac Barbell 'Tetanus' Power Bar
Contrary to the popular belief, Tetanus has nothing to do with rust. The bacteria spread via feces.
and to add to above, after lying 48h in vinegar acid, there won't be any bacteria anymore
Only part of the process, next time take sleeve off and clean shaft and cooping and light light grease of bushings and lock tight for bolt or pin for good seal, love videos like this keep it up restoration, do plates next
Super helpful! Thanks for this Coop!
Coop, you did a beautiful job! That is so impressive. I am blown away! = )
Gorgeous bar.
This video helped a-lot, i found a 45 pound olympic bar outside a garbage bin, it was really rusted but luckily i found this video. Thanks guys
The amounts of negatives comments online nowadays is mind blowing. Thank you Sir for "trying" to help by taking your time to share your experience.
Incredible result!
You need to restore one that’s been setting in the yard for 30 years now that would be something
Yea like the suggestion🎉 I have one been sitting outside for 20+ years, I think I will try the Vinegar and water to see how it might turn out.. Weight Lifting for 50 years
I absolutely love the look and feel of a bare steel bar. Nothing compares.
Fantastic... recycle, restore, reuse!
Popped up from the algorithm… moustacheless coop will give me sleepless nights.
Great job, Been keeping my eye out for some old plates to restore, but haven't found any in my area yet!
The race is on!
Brandon did you unload your combo bench to coop? Looks awfully familiar in his garage....what’s up with strongarm sports being the new provider of legit home gym equipment for the budget friendly enthusiasts?
Ryan Feltman nope! Mine now lives in a high school in MA. Strongarm is looking to break more into the US so they’ve been really kind to me and Coop by sending stuff out. Luckily their stuff is very good value for the price. Personally though I don’t think the combo makes sense for most vs a traditional rack.
I was able to purchase several bars and 200+ lbs of rusty weights today for $125. And now the cleaning commences...
You could try cold blueing the steel , it's used with rifle barrels to help prevent rust
First time watching one of your old video's. Dam! you've come a long way!
Great results! Thought about doing this to save money on equipment.
Watched this before I did my weight plate resto thanks for making this vid 💪🏽💪🏽
Patiently waiting for another garage gym tour. 👍
Nice restoration!
Great video! Very cool!
Nice work! Might wanna do this with some rusty plates I have.
That is awesome!
Woah, really good to learn from this video
We find treasure like this all the time!!! We use acid on rust. Great educational video.
Great video!
Great job
Beautiful
Good video. Appreciate it.
what a beauty.
Great content thank you sir
Be interested to know if this locked up quite quickly. Wondering if the vinegar penetrated the bar ends and dissolved the oil/grease. I've recently restored a bar and removed the ends before cleaning and regressed before re-assembling, maybe I didn't need to!
Nice video thanks 😀
great job
Excellent restoration, Coop... Perfect timing too for me. I'll be getting a super curl bar from Marketplace tomorrow that looks just as bad. Now I know how to clean it up. ;) \,,/ Peace!
Super fine or fine bronze wool with 3 in 1 oil removes a ton of surface rust but is gentle to the bar steel.
Coop's pickling an old barbell... :)
FYI blueing solution, the same thing they use for coating gun parts and tools works wonders, it gives the metal a dark complextion and prevents rust.
Just bought a rusty barbell and I watched this video to see how it’s done!
Two thumbs up for this vid! One is for the luck of finding such a nice bar for what, I assume, was a great price. Second is for the beautiful restoration job done on it.
I have a 15 year old (or so) Buddy Capp TPB. Black oxide finish on the shaft originally; sleeves were bare. I believe they advertised it as 175,000 pounds tensile strength. Same cheese grater knurling. With all the specialty bars I have it doesn't make it into the rotation that often any more and spends most of its life in the rack in a garage gym exposed to high humidity. Let's just say that the steel is very high maintenance. The more they're used the less rusty they get.
That towel looks like abstract art, LOL!
Hey coop go get a product called Nevr Dull and try that on the bar, you might be able to shine that bar like new.
You want a patina on the bar.
What great video. I picked up an Olympic Barbell which was covered in rust for $10. Got a drainpipe and so vinegar at a cost of $20. I put the bar in and left for 5 days. To my surprise, all the rust fell away t reveal it is an Ivanko Barbell. Not bad for $30. Now trying to work out if I can identify the model. Any ideas how i can do it?
Thanks for the video. Do you have a paint recommendation for plates that are going to kept outside. Right now they are rusty and we use them for our sleds. I have no intention of using them inside but would like to paint school colors to make them look nicer. Is it worth it or do you think the new paint will just re-rust?
Hey that’s a great video. It really helps. But I have a question, the barbel I’m restoring has chrome sleeves, has a little bit of rust on it and I would like to paint them, do you think it would work.?
I never knew about mac barbell or that Texas power bar breaking with mac barbell
Man I would love to get a bar like that, and restore it without removing all the character. Why didn't you remove the sleeves?
Have you ever done a review on the strongarm combo rack? The one we can see at the beginning of the video?
My eyes killed me lol FOCUS love the videos though haha
damn wasn’t expecting that to be that easy
Did u remove collars and clean inside and regrease?
I just did this and was wondering if I should try and coat the bar with anything besides 3and1 oil
I hear soaking bearings in vinegar without regreasing them is a great idea.
Great job ! Do you think if would have benefited from rinsing it after pulling it out of the vinegar solution? If it's enough to eat rust, over time wont it still eat into the bar since the residual is still there.
Wondering if gun blueing fluid would be an easy protective layer to add to an old bar?
Thanks for this video👍. I will be trying your this on my barbell next week. Looking forward to more of your video's. New subscriber ( 4 - 6 - 2019 ).
ive always liked coop but when i saw the onewhell!!!
curious why you didn't want to take off the sleeves?
This is why Sandow liked barbells. Simple. Sustainable. Damn near immortal.
Forreal!
What size of Allen wrench do I use to remove the screw at the end of the bar, I lost one side and need to replace them??
Hello I just bought a bar it has a little rust but my main question is can or have you ever painted one? If so how please. Thank you.
I love the theme music that your playing
Hi! The last product you use os like 3 1oil? How can i remove the oil after? Or i haven’t remove the oil?
Hey Coop, do you still have this bar and train with it? Kinda was thinking about this bar again.
I have 2 rusty 45s. Ima try this
Im gonna do this with my barbell. Where can i get the long box and tarp??
That's how my barbell looks. Super rusted
What's that treadmill in the background. Review?
must u add water? i din and it made the dark rust yellow for some reason?
Hey Coop, I watched this video and tried it on my old rusty barbell and it did wonders. I just had one question with my barbell flakes of metal have been coming off at the ends and I don’t know if I should be concerned or if that’s just part of the process. Is there anything I could do to to fix that specifically?
No monetary reason to answer.
have you tried bluing? I wondering how much of a difference it will make, or if I should just bite the bullet and buy a SS bar
Does anyone know if something like cerakote or hydrodipping would work well as a coating for old barbells the coating wore off of?
Did you inspect the inside of the sleeves after the vinegar bath? You'd think leaving the vinegar would do more harm than good?
Any chance you’re gonna do a review on the Onewheel? 😀
DId you disassembled the sleeves to oil the bearings? Not necessary?
I just got a hex trap bar from a neighbor for free but it’s rusted to hell. Thinking about knocking the knurling down some when I clean it up because it’s tearing my hands up.
Nice Onewheel
Hi, as soon as I dry off the cleaned bar it starts to show rust forming. is there a way that this won't happen? I want to put a clear coat of Rust-oleum on it.If I put oil on it, it won't stick.
thx for the video.
would this process also clean rusted weight plates?
Still my favourite video
Exactly what I need to do! But can’t find something to submerge the bar in
Use a 2x8 and a couple of 2x4's. Makes a perfect box that can be easily disassembled and uses far less vinegar. Probably only need 1.5 gals each of vinegar and water.
Go to home depot / lowes buy a 10’ long 1 1/4” diameter pvc pipe and 2 caps + i also bought the glue to seal one end.. took the bar apart ..plugged one end glued it.. stood it straight up and tied it up outside to a post.. filled tube with vinegar and capped the top no glue on that end (duhh) total was 11$ for the pvc pipe, 2 caps and glue
How often can I brush my bar with a steel or copper brush until the knurling gets damaged? Can I buy a bare steel barbell and clean it every month and the knurling will be aggressive and good for decades or will it get less sharp? Thanks in Advance!
Im trying to this now and I just want my bar to spin again 😂
If I can't make a large tub long enough for the barbell can I just soak tissue/cloth with white vinegar and place it over the rust???
HI, i have a barbell similar to yours (older style) i bought on marketplace. The screw on thing that keeps the weights in place is rusted and striped and keeps coming loose. What is this part called and how would i order a new one?
Would you dip the whole bar if the rust is only on the collars? There isn’t any on the shaft or knurl.
Good Video!🤙 my bar was just as rusty. I cleaned it the same way and the vinegar took the stainless off. But it did clean it up good! Thanks for posting.
Which vinegar brand did you use ? I looked up in Home Depot etc.. they are expensive !!
@@raghavanandjakkani7605 Any white vinegar. White vinegar is white vinegar. Get a generic brand, i.e. Stater Bros. brand white vinegar is cheaper than Heinz white vinegar.
Why all the Olympic bars on the wall rack in the garage? Do you sell them? Great refurb job 👍
How did you clean the inside of the sleeves and bearings too?
Where can I get Dione sleeve adapter for bar like the one restore
So the bar alone did it feel lighter than some olympic or power bars or was it just as heavy or heavier?
I ask cause I might buy one of the old york bars
GOKU BLACK the only York bars are amazing... someone stole mine years back but it was 20KG
Where can i get a box and plastic bag like that?
I wonder where the bar is now and how it's holding up
What type of brush did you use?
Does it still weigh 20 Kilos? Or is there any weightloss through corrosion😆
curious
@@SejeSteen There probably a little corrosion, but as long as it's not in competition it should be so little it doesn't matter.
Probably a couple grams were lost when the Iron oxide dissolved
Did the bearings suffer being in the liquid?
Good question !!
Brush the knurling with wd40 and metal brush then 80 grit sandpaper saves time and energy
Lmfao yo I found a rusty barbell too , typed in “ how to get rust off of metal “ 3 video down look what I see😂
