I think the reason you ended up with a few bubbles, as you mentioned in the follow-up video (which is a great video), might be that a roller with diluted glue doesn't get a thick enough coat on there and a spreader or a sheetrock joint knife will help it to adhere better than your hands.
I'm actually in the process now and I see that getting a bubble can happen pretty easily. I tried applying the glue with a brush and it takes forever, so I used a roller and it really is a lot easier to roll the diluted glue. It also doesn't start gumming up as quickly. I'm so glad you mentioned that the paint pan of glue and roller can be kept in a plastic bag and stay active. I also kept my gluey paint brush in a bag and was able to use it again the next day.
