- I know I've heard "Highway To Hell" by AC/DC before, and even though I thought it was on a rollercoaster, I was reminded after filming that this was in the movie Iron Man. OF COURSE! But I've only ever done one deep dive into Brian Johnson's vocals, so I couldn't wait to dig into another live version with him at the reins!

I remember an interview with Angus from the late 80’s when they asked if Malcom would ever play a lead. Angus replied, “Malcom doesn’t like to play lead, he says it interferes with his drinking.”

A side note, Malcolm Young, Angus' brother and rhythm guitarist of AC/DC, was battling dementia during this tour and was relearning the songs every night. A true legend.

A fun semi-related fact: The majority of AC/DC songs utilize the Mixolydian Mode. It is less "happy" than major, but less "dark" than minor
When the crowd starts singing THE GUITAR RIFF and not just the vocal parts, that's when you know a song is huge.
Tbf the concert is in Argentina, we pretty much always sing the riffs.
That stadium was the epicenter for an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale for the entire concert. ROCK ON AC/DC!!!

"Highway to Hell" is the nickname of "Highway in Australia", which runs through where original singer Bon Scott lived and ends at a bar called "The Raffles". As the highway comes to an end, it turns into a steep decline and because of this, many drivers have been killed driving fast over that intersection.
Also, the fact that you can actually see the cameras shaking from how much the crowd is jumping is insane. Love the energy and definitely is one of the most epic concerts of all time.
What's the name of that long highway from I guess Melbourne to western Australia? That also has some kind of sinister name

@Cadinho93 Canning Highway - I know it well and have driven on it many, many times since the 1970s :) Technically it does not end at the Raffles Hotel - its carries on through the suburbs towards Perth. The 'hell stretch' AC/DC refer to is the segment between Fremantle and the old Raffles Hotel.
The only song I specifically remember from an amusement ride is Slow Ride from Foghat on the Musik Express/Himalaya ride that is sort of a very short circular roller coaster.
Only one rule to remember with AC/DC. Never, never, never interrupt an Angus Young guitar solo.
Nothing like an AC/DC concert, moves EVERYONE, pure hard rock.
You can easily tell when in the concert a song takes place with AC/DC live, due to how much clothing Angus has on. You will probably be surprised by this fact, but this was actually the second to last song of the concert, showing you how well supported his voice truly is! You HAVE to check out the last song of this concert now, "For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)", which is the loudest thing I have ever heard live at any concert I've been to, (and I've been to a LOT.) You want to see an epic conclusion to a concert...well...they don't go silently and they make a lasting impact. (The concert I attended ended the same way...and I couldn't hear for a couple days...but it was worth it! And yes, if you do check it out, they are REAL!)
Greatest encore ever… I get chills every time the opening riff starts. The canons… the way the tempo speeds up at the end… it’s impossible to top it.

I saw AC/DC on the Highway to Hell tour and Bon Scott one of the best unique voices in Rock! Sorely missed! I saw AC/DC on Back in Black in 1980 and For Those About to Rock We Salute You in 1981. Brian Johnson was the perfect fit for AC/DC after Bon passed. Brian was a unique voice just like Bon’s voice was unique. Love them both!

When I was at college, the State school across town had a clock that tolled the hours. On weekends, when quiet hours weren't an issue, one student over there would grab his guitar, put the amp in his dorm window, and when the clock struck midnight he'd play the intro to "Hell's Bells."
She mainly listens to live versions...so she can see what they look like singing...but often the studio versions are superior...

@@mikewiest5135 Another reason for live versions is to actually hear the voice. Most studio track have multiple layers of vocal track as well as audio tweaking done to them.
By doing live version you can hear what they actually sound like.
"Highway to Hell" is the song that is playing at the closing scene of Iron Man 2, where Tony and Rhody are getting their medals from Senator Gary Shandling, and it continues as the credits roll. The song you're thinking of with them riding through the desert at the beginning of the first one is "Back in Black," the title track from the first album to feature the incomparable Brian Johnson. "Shoot to Thrill" off that album also appears in Iron Man 2 and The Avengers, Tony kind of uses it as his theme song when making an entrance in both movies... both tracks, you should check out, that whole album is amazing.
Also, on the subject of large crowds and sync, Adam Savage, the former Mythbuster, talked in an interview about an experiment he and fellow host Jamie Hyneman performed on a large crowd. They wanted to see how well a crowd jumping would register on a seismometer. The crowd was something like a quarter of a million people stretched over the Capitol Mall in Washington, D.C. The first attempt didn't go well because of the difference between the speed of light and the speed of sound. People were jumping when he counted down from three and he recalled seeing a wave of them rise and fall because of the disparity. On subsequent attempts, they had the commands flashed on a large screen, which got the crowd to make the jump in sync and get a reading on the seismometer.
No other band does a live show quite like ACDC. Off the charts energy and excitement!

Interesting that you bring out how AC/DC leaves "space" in their songs. They are written for concerts and audience participation, and they never disappoint.

I would love to hear you analyze the same song by Bon Scott. Maybe even a side by side comparison? There is live footage of Bon singing this song in concert too. A processional analysis of both vocalists would be unique and awesome. NOT to pick one or the other, but to just see how this one band managed to have two amazing singers who contributed to the legacy of the band. I truly love both, I can't pick one as better, but they were uniquely different. What would be similar? What would be different? It would be an interesting different type of reaction video.

I saw AC/DC Oct 8th 1979 at the Fox Theater in Atlanta Ga. Pat Travers was the opening act. Tickets were $7.50 in a 3,784 seat theater. I took my 18 year old son ,who had never been to a major rock concert, on Oct. 23rd. 2009 at Philips Arena for the Black Ice tour. Tickets were $93.50 in a 18,000 seat venue. He was blown away. I'll never forget those two dates.
I love the fact that you love Brian Johnson's voice!!! So many singers in the Opera world would totally dismiss most rock singers, let alone someone with an unusual raspy voice. But with singing, it either works or it doesn't. And by god Brian Johnson is a damned good singer!!
I got to see them play live many years ago and they were great. LOUD but fantastic. I was fascinated with how Angus never stops moving. Where does he get all that energy? Brian too. RIP Malcolm.

As much as I love Bon Scott, his vocals weren't that great. you can argue he was more charismatic. but vocally, Brian took them to a whole another level.

AC/DC are one of those bands where if you've heard one song, you've heard them all... But still gotta hear all the other songs, over and over again. This was the first song of the encore. Not only did the horns disappear, but Angus is playing an entirely different guitar at that point!
I'd disagree a bit there. Yes, AC/DC have their recipe with 2 guitars, bass, drums, vocals, rock music, that's it, but if you listen to Cold hearted man and Given the dog a bone, two of their greatest songs in my opinion, they're quite different. And I would say there was a greater variation during the Bon Scott years. Beating around the bush vs Overdose. There's a different vibe, feeling, tempo. So they're not Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin, but you can explore their different sounds and feels through their catalogue, especially with Bon.
River plate's footage is mixed from the 3 concerts they did there on the tour.
Life long rock fan here - I've heard this song probably 519 times, but watching AC DC perform with that rock n' roll joy and such a charismatic front man - Legends.

Saw them live in 2009... what a shitshow. Brian spend most of the concert doing faces..or his singing face, whatever that is.
Have listened to ac/dc for almost 40 years. Have all the albums. But after back in black, there aint an album that truly rocks. A few good tracks here and there. But for me Brians screaming voice and the "ac/dc formula" on every track is just boring and lazy.
@@simonlauridsen4825 Sadly would have to agree. I know it's a horrible cliche, but their earlier stuff is the best - peak AC/DC being Powerage, Let There Be Rock, and High Voltage. As you say, there are a few decent bits and pieces post-Bon, but mostly they've become a cookie-cutter producer of dad rock. Like professional sport, popular music is largely a young person's purview, and stand-out performances decrease with age. Players are often compelled by their own ego/manager/finances to keep trying to perform even when they've reached a natural end to their competitiveness/creativity and it usually doesn't end well.

The singing on the Back in Black LP is some of the best hard rock singing ever for me. Brian gives those songs insane energy and power with his vocal delivery.
To this day it gives me chills which is extremely rare. The way he rolls into the third verse of Shake a leg after that amazing guitar solo is too good.

AC/DC concerts are amazing. The one I went to in LA had a crowd that could of been at Disneyland. Elderly ladies, young children and whole families.
It was so cool to see older ladies rocking out. A clear example of the universal love of an excellent rock band.

Brian really did a great job taking over lead after Bon passed away, and this is from someone who's favorite lead of all time is Bon Scott. Speaking of Bon, did you know he had some hit songs BEFORE AC/DC with a couple of pop groups in the 60s? It's pretty fun to see and hear him with those groups before he got huge.

AC/DC is without a doubt the loudest concert I have ever been to.
My favorite band but I believe I suffered permanent hearing damage on the Black Ice Tour. Blue Oyster Cult was extremely loud first time I saw them too. Shell-shocked.
@@johndef5075 yeah my ears probably rung for two days, I saw them on the Flick of the switch tour. I’m pretty sure it was the cannons that finished me off.
You also have to realize these guys absolutely LOVE what they do and every member are in their mid 60's to mid 70's today and they still put on a high energy show. Now this video was shot I think in 2009 or maybe 2011 I don't remember, at River Platte in South America in a soccer stadium and the audience was every thing from 18 to 60 and they were literally losing their minds. I've been a fan since the late 70's.
Brian has done a extraordinary job for AC/DC ! Like he was born for that role!

Oh my gosh, I never considered the time delay of sound travel in large auditoriums. I can imagine that in-ears would be critical for proper timing. I've always thought that the wave of jumping audiences was just people off time. The most amazing thing I have learned in a long time! Thank you for that morsel of information!

There are bands that explore different sounds. Their albums are sometimes risky. Other bands have a formula. AC/DC is the epitome of a band that has a formula that it protects vigorously.

That crowd isn't just listening, it's partying with them, understandably so too. Easily one of my top three concert I've been to if not the best outright was one of theirs. I don't know about a rollercoaster (would you even be able to hear music on a rollercoaster?) but there used to be a fair ride simply called "Rock & Roll" that played loud music. There's two variations that I can remember, one was classic rock themed with juke boxes and Cadillacs and the other was metal themed and blared ACDC, Guns N Roses and the like.
Bon Scott was the original vocalist for AC/DC. He had an extremely unique voice. Passed in 1980, RIP.

This was the 18th song (of 19 total) in the concert and actually the first song in the encore. It was right after Angus Young's guitar solo.
I believe there's a quote from AC/DC concerning the "empty" places in their music, "What you don't play is just as important as what you do." (or something very similar) This is a key to the great concert sound. If you can, go see them live. It's an experience that you will NEVER forget!

I've noticed over time that you seem to understand, enjoy and have a respect for the rock music that all rock fans have enjoyed for years. It's lovely to see you put this genre of music more firmly on the map.
Angus is an incredible guitarist, thanks to his remarkable work ethic. Even decades after making it big, he was still getting up early to work on chords or other guitar work.
Hoping you also do a deeper dive on Bon Scott's time with AC/DC. One of my personal favorites goes completely against expectations
and is a stripped down, pure blues song called Ride On. It's beautifully done.

Elizabeth you have given us so many great analyses that I am trusting your choice and keeping an open mind for Brian Johnson over Bon Scott for the first analysis of Highway To Hell. As has already been mentioned, Bon Scott and the rest of AC/DC originally wrote and performed the song. In my opinion, Bon Scott's vocals have more range, emotional color, mood and a diversity of inflection. Brian Johnson is a "freight train" of a vocalist. Personally, I see it as a heresy, (a little tongue-in-cheek heresy). I was 8 (circa 1977) when I first heard AC/DC's High Voltage and have been hooked ever since. I can't speak for any other O.G. AC/DC fans, but despite the great Brian Johnson being the lead vocalist since 1980 he is still the replacement singer in my view. I still listen to the Bon Scott albums way more than the Brian Johnson albums. Thank you for your effort and challenging our sensibilities. I am sure the analysis will be great. mirra tu manana 🤘🙂🤘
Angus and Malcolm Young made a complete right decision to continue their band with Brian Johnson. "Back in Black" (1980), "For Those About to Rock" (1981) and "The Razors Egde" (1990) are great albums with Brian Johnson. I think their best concert was "Live at Donington" in 1991 even if Phil Rudd was replaced by Chris Slade at the time. It is funny to watch how AC/CD fans go crazy in their concerts all over the world. Sometimes I wish AC/DC would perform also their less known tracks from various albums in their concerts, but obviously the audience like to hear certain classic songs.
Love the channel. The music, the analysis, and the genuine reactions keeps bringing me back for more. So much so, my wife is jealous.

I read Brian Johnson's book (the life of brian) and he said when recording Back in Black album the producer was pushing him to "unlock" and sing in higher notes, but he was impressed he could do that. As per the lyrics, it was an insane work in those weeks, Malcom and Angus used to give him riffs every night and asked him what could he do with them.
This concert was one of the best live rock and roll performances ever recorded. Right up there with Queen and U2 at "Live Aid".
AC/DC sure knows how to put on a show.
They where my start into Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.
But the best concert for me is Dimmu Borgir Live in Oslo Spectrum Forces of the Northern Nights in 2012.

I saw AC/DC at my local basketball stadium in Western Australia in the mid-1980s. They've gotten better every year. RIP Malcolm Young.
Brian Johnson is the energizer bunny of hard rock. So many memories cone back with AC/DC
A good example of the audio wave traveling over the crowd and how its handled can be seen in the documentary about the Rolling Stones concert in Brazil (I think). The concert was held on the beach with the crowd reaching over a mile back. They had several sets of speakers (like the ones set up after the first quarter of the crowd in this show) going down the beach. Each set of speakers had to be delayed to match up with the initial sound wave from the stage so the people further back wouldn't hear the same chords and lyrics multiple times.
It is amazing to learn how much science & manpower go into concerts of that scale.
Would love to see you do an analysis of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Literally any song by them is amazing. Just make sure you do a live version. They are 10x better live. Probably one of the top bands to play better live than in studio. Tuesday's gone, simple man, searchin, freebird, T for Texas, railroad song, or travelin man are all good ones to do. But with skynyrd, there are no bad ones.

That grit you talk about in Brian’s voice is what contrasts him so much over Bon’s vocals. They each have an amazing voice with the band, but it adds such a unique flavor and vibe to the overall feel.
Brian is such a cool guy. That's 2 songs you've done with him older. I'd love to see you watch him younger and hear his best. It's a gravelly paradise, that voice of his!

ACDC live were pure raw energy. You can't sit still from beginning to end. Such an infectious sound. I think Brian is now deaf and also had vocal issues. Axl Rose had to step in to finish a world tour with them a while back. He did an excellent job too. I love Brian's voice on Razor's Edge, huge song :)
He got his hearing fixed, they came out with a new album in 2020 called power up after Malcom passed it is absolutely incredible!!!

AC/DC is arguably the greatest rock band ever. They released four perfect albums in a row that sounded vastly different from one another (Powerage, Highway To Hell, Back In Black and For Those About To Rock). AC/DC is all about power and swagger. Brian's take on Bon's classics is excellent; different but excellent. Elizabeth's comments are so enlightening. She is always finding the positive and great things about a singer. I have come to appreciate songs I have listened to for over 40 years in a new way. Love this channel!

Elizabeth...if you didn't hear, AC/DC is playing LIVE again at the Power Trip Festival in California this coming Saturday, on 10-07-23. Brian is 76 now, and Angus is 68. Can't wait!!!
