Regarding the coughing in the intro, Tonny Iommi:"I choked me bloody self! It wasn’t intended to happen, and it wasn’t supposed to be on the track. We were in the studio tracking that song, and Ozzy gave me a joint and I nearly choked myself. The tape was on, so of course they wanted to use it to begin the track."

Great example is Phil Anselmo from Pantera who named one of Pantera's songs Cemetary Gates as a homage for Smiths:) Johnny wrote music, Morrssey wrote lyrics and vocal melodies in Black Sabbath Ozzy was responsibl for melodies but his vocal melodies are very close to riffs. Btw, Zakk Wylde said the same thing about Ozzy. He said he's great at writing melodies and spotting good riffs & song ideas. He also comes up with some of the song titles & concepts.

  • @aaronjv

Loving all this, Sabbath is possibly my favorite band of all time. Their guitar sound is partially due to Tony Iommi losing his fingertips in an industrial accident when he used to work in a factory. he loosened the strings to make it easier to play and it added to the "doom" sound. The killer riffs are almost all Iommi, Geezer did almost all the lyrics, but Ozzy had the melody (usually). If you finish with stoner rock do more Kyuss: Whitewater
PLEASE consider doing punk rock next: The Clash, The Stooges, then Ramones and Sex Pistols.

I’ll be 69 years old in a couple of weeks. My buddies and I saw Black Sabbath in concert in New Orleans in September 1972. I was a twenty year old puppy then. It was on my urging that we agreed to go. Why I had to mention this? We were only a few blacks in attendance at that time. My favorite concert of all time and believe me I’ve been to a few. Sabbath is no doubt my favorite group. Oh yes, also the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Didn’t see Hendrix live but I did see Stevie Ray Vaughn live. Nuff said.

The arrangement in the band was Tony wrote the riffs, Geezer wrote the lyrics and Ozzy created the melodies. Also, that cough in the begining was Tony taking a mad hit off a joint and they captured it on tape.

Generally, the early sabbath was Iommi: riffs, Geezer: lyrics, Ozzy melodies, Bill: doing his thing on the drums. Truly a team effort. Hardcore fans correct me if I’m wrong. I’ve also heard Tony Iommi say that Ozzy sang to the riffs, while Dio sang to the chord progressions...

    • @manmoth_1990

That's definitely right on some tracks, like "Iron Man". Ozzy literally just sings the melody from the riff over the riff itself. But not always the case. I think Ozzy just made up a melody on some songs, or the melody was just born out of the band jamming some shit down and Ozzy bringing a lyric sheet and going nuts with the band.

Tony did use alternate tunings on his guitar. He had an accident and lost tips of two of his fingers on the hand he used on the fret board. It was easier to depress the strings by tuning the guitar down and sounded mean as hell. He has done many interviews discussing the accident and how it influenced Black Sabbaths sound. Love your content guys!!! Always entertaining and fun.
