Astounding how anyone with no prior synthesiser experience could come up with such incredible compositions. Arrangements on early Numan tracks were truly outstanding which's partly why they still sound fresh/exciting
I still haven't heard it because I'm deaf. I also haven't seen the video because I'm blind and never commented about it on CZcams because I'm illiterate. So much because.
Why did the UK media dislike Gary Numan so much in his early years? Answer- Conventional minds always struggle to understand and appreciate an innovative GENIUS.
@@BethellAthletico I remember the day I seen that interview and as my dad was a coal miner I decided then not to buy any more of his records at the time. I seen an interview later on with him saying he got it wrong! He lives near me now and I’ve bumped into him many times and we talked about it, the press and their hatred for him long before that interview! I think it was the NME magazine that said Numan would never influence any future bands Kanye West Nine inch nails Marilyn Manson Franz Ferdinand Dave Grohl To name a few!, I’m going to see him in May in Glasgow for his Pleasure Principal and replicas album mini tour, a present for my 60th birthday, I still haven’t spent any money on him😂. Turns out he really is a lovely guy but he’s not my hero anymore, my beautiful dad is, who died of pit related disease at 63 years of age! Priorities!
@@headron66 I lost all respect for him back then. Music and politics were incredibly tied together in the 80s, so him coming out to make clear he was a Tory was a real red rag to a bull. Every gig we went to back then were collection-points for coal-miners (sorry to hear about your father) and later on, the Greenham Common woman, regardless of the music style. Numan instead showed he was completely detached from his fans. It was even more heartbreaking because he was so brilliant, though it came while his musical output was taking a big turn for the worse (he'd already retired by then and then came back). While I've never liked much after Telekon I'm still happy to see he's still working and has a fantastic fan base. I had the wonderful chance to buy him a drink and chat with him at a Sex Pistol's Filthy Lucre party back in '96. We talked mostly about Telekon and his "retirement". He is one of the sweetest, most human guys one could ever wish to meet, and totally deserves the respect he's earned. Oddly, as you mention his influences on so many others, I've had Afrika Bambaataa's Metal on a loop all this week.
Me too. And the guitar and bass player showed the 666 hand gesture about 50 plus times. I like Gary;s music but he uses a lot of occultic symbolism, yes its a religion of darkness. Gary does the one eye Horus @2:37 mark in video above, he does this often and his pyramids along with occultic sign of osiris slain(he did this maybe 20 times when I saw him).
This guy changed music forever. He showed that you could make unique music and images without being part of the orthodoxy of rock music. All modern music comes from Are Friends Electric. Kraftwerk gets the credit from creating modern music, but Numan showed that anyone could do the same He changed British pop music and changed pop music world wide, just like the Beatles and Marc Bolan
You are 100% correct. The DIY of the modern age began with Numan..he proved that you didn't need to be Keith Emerson, Wendy Carlos or Kraftwerk to make electronic music and showed a whole generation of musicians how to do it. He should be in the (so-called) Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...he, more than anyone else shaped modern music. He showed that you could do it yourself without having a Ph.D in music theory or an engineering degree to make electronic music. After 40 years, he's still my inspiration to make electronic music, even if only as a hobby. One of the G.O.A.T.s
This video is a gem ! Just a couple of years prior you had all of those super cheesy acts of glam rock playing on TOTP like Suzie Quatro, Slade, The Sweet, not to mention all the prog rock bands. It was all rhinestones and glitter and silly hats. And Gary arrived, like a time traveler from the future, and showed what the next century would be like.
My favorite Gary Numan track of ALL TIME. That thumping bass sound! What is it?? He was the epitome of cool. Give it a listen on full blast with headphones!
Probably a Minimoog passed through a number of guitar effect pedals (including a flanger, I'd say). You might find this interesting: czcams.com/video/FMJlI3cR4WM/video.html
Lyrics We're in the building Where they make us grow And I'm frightened by The liquid engineers Like you. My Mallory heart Is sure to fail I could crawl around the floor Just like I'm real Like you. And who are you And how can I try Here inside I like metal Aren't you All I know Is no-one dies I'm still confusing love with need.
Powerful banger tune, and great video for 1979 considering MTV didn't start til two years later! Once again Gary Numan was brilliantly ahead of his time
When you hear Are Friends electric?, Cars , Metal now and then you see released 1979 during the height of the Disco and Pop era .He was a whole generation ahead at least
Most fans would agree this would have hit higher than complex, but record company formula third release a ballad prevailed and prevented this song being his third no 1 single.
Gary Numan is the only man on Earth who could withstand extremely high levels of radiation and still look even better 4 decades later. Let that sink in.
If someone present me this fantástic music today i believe was made in 2023. Im in August 2023... Ive only ever meet Metal yesterday because NiN rework. Im sory Mr Gary Numan for that... But WHAT a song!!! ❤
I recall Gary being worried about the size of his bottom lip, again not wanting to look goofy. I'm always sorry and astounded at how certain prominent musicians of the time took Gary's stern face seriously and used it as an opportunity to make fun of him or to paint him as lost in narcissism. Nope! Gary is a kind soul with the curiosity and enthusiasm for nu things of a child. For him and us, Asperger syndrome was a gift.
matthew lyons if I recall correctly, I think this was filmed specifically for Tyne Tees television and was aired during one of their late evening local news programs. Saw it then and never again until now.

Forty years later and it stands the test of time. Crazy that it was a B-side in the U.S. Easily my favorite Numan track!
Funny part is that I've owned The Pleasure Principle and it was the kiddo's love of Poppy and her cover that led me back to the original.
👍👍👍
It’s my fave on the album too
czcams.com/video/vq4FFgMdmCk/video.html
Slowly coming round to the idea that this is the best tune taken from the best album ever.
This is when electronic music ROCKED.
Headbanging electronic music!
Listening in 1979: Wow, I can't wait to live in the distant future!
Listening in 2024: Wow, I wish I could go back to 1979!
Ain’t that the truth!
I love the coldness of the images conveyed by the lyrics, a dystopian landscape.
This sound for 1979, Incredible
You can definitely hear the influence this would have on later 80s music, one of the most game changing albums of all time
Feel so sad that it took me 44 years to hear this !
Literally 😢
@manofweed Pareil !
I still haven't heard it because I'm deaf. I also haven't seen the video because I'm blind and never commented about it on CZcams because I'm illiterate. So much because.
Do yourself a favor and listen to the Poppy cover. It's what make me rediscover this song and also discover that she is awesome as well.
Gary Numan- The Nicola Tesla of the music world.
Shawn Jacobs You’re not really too far off, with that statement...
😂✌🏻
For the Intellingence not for the Rest
The human league and John foxx were there first.
Nicola Tesla- The Gary Numan of the science world.

Tampoco a Bowie lo comprendían.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
As I remember they didn't, not until he came out as a Margaret Thatcher voting Tory around '82.

The Extremely High Genius that the rest of the world has ignored to thier own detriment for 40 years: Gary Numan
His last 2 albums hit #2 in the UK (actually Savage was #1 in electronic music on Amazon for a while) - so he's not THAT ignored!
Genius level, for sure.
He was so ahead of his time😭
This song sounds weird and ahead of its time and its already 40 plus- ridiculous
Why is everything ahead of its time to people?
Saw him live a couple days ago. Such a kickass show and Gary on full blast. Played this song.

An extremely gifted artist and of course the Godfather of techno and new wave!!!! Thank you for the music Gary Numan!!!!
kraftwerk
Giorgio Moroder and Kraftwerk
That’s filmed in Hebburn, near Newcastle upon Tyne, at an engineering company called Reyrolles. Memories!
This song still crushes it to this day.....
CLASSIC NUMAN....Way ahead of the rest....
38 years old !!! Still sounding brilliant
My favorite Gary Newman song..... greetings of Peru...
Me gusto Peru! Greetings from the U.K. I lived in Callao for a while you have a beautiful country.

Well there was punk inbetween!
I love this track, especially the moment where it pauses momentarily and then starts up again! Always a highlight of his live shows.

He had almost three years where he did not record a single bad song. Everything was innovative and good, if not brilliant.

Numan Uber Alles...this sound was 100 years in advance of its time...thank you for putting it on line. Great job.
This is the video I saw on MTV when I first heard Gary Numan
First time I hear it .. Really like it .. glad to know he made something good other than Cars.
'Films' is my favourite Numan track. 'Metal' is a close second. But the list goes on and on, as you know.
Tesla of music poet lyrics and that sound, all these years later absolute relevance like a time traveller
Gary Numan invented metal music. And is still rocking out.
This guy pumped out some great tunes and still does..thanks for you’re post
Omg 1979❤ I was born 1990 🎶🎶🎶
Powerful banger tune, and great video for 1979 considering MTV didn't start til two years later! Once again Gary Numan was brilliantly ahead of his time
Had this been the follow up single to Cars instead of Complex I reckon he’d have scored his third Number 1 in 1979.
When you hear Are Friends electric?, Cars , Metal now and then you see released 1979 during the height of the Disco and Pop era .He was a whole generation ahead at least
very much agree. his worst ever decision

Saw him perform this last night. Still sounds amazing!
Can’t believe that this came out in 79’..it has such a mid 80’s feel to it!
I've never seen this before. This is great! More rare footage please!
This has been on CZcams since Feb 2008, I thought maybe it was the one the description refers to or maybe not: czcams.com/video/wtbqFNxIHyI/video.html
Brilliant! Thanks! With so many great ones now gone, I treasure anything Numan that's out there.
Never saw this. Love the Tetsuo: The Iron Man jump cuts!
Gary numan is just awesome! We wouldn't have so many awesome bands if it wasnt for him! Total genius!
I got the 45 of "Cars" in '79. This was the B side. Great song.
I can see how trent reznor from nine inch nails was influenced by him!
Lol i just commented the same in the original video after watching Trent's cover of this song
How about a thumbs up for the bass on this which is also brilliant! Really compliments this song and makes it all round fab!
I originally had this on video as a bootleg back in the 80's.
He has aspbergers. Imagine how difficult a life on stage would be
My 15 year old son is autistic and he is really into Gary's music, which has made me appreciate it even more.
just goes to show it's not a prison sentence.
I have Aspergers, its very hard to communicate with others and such, so yeah. I love this guy.
Amazing
Love this song
Forgot about how good this tune was my early morning fix ..... thanx for posting 👍❤️🎧🙏🏴😎💥
This is so addictive, great!
I've always loved Gary Numan's music, and image. Still relevant today. Very uniqjue and innovative. Maxine sobers Great Yarmouth Norfolk England ❤️
Amazing lyrics. Way ahead of anyone that time.
been a fan for years fascinating man , little known fact the reason he never smiled he said he looked goofy with he's teeth
Said he looked like Bugs Bunny! Haha (:
True he smies now and its brill to c him smile

I guess someone needs to... remind him to smile!
To be all the time smiling is not a obligation for artists, especially today, un these Covid times. Artists are a mirror of society and actuality
Gary the godfather of Elettro punk wave 😍
I thought this guy was so cool when I was young. Still do.
Brilliant
Brilliant.. But smile Gary
I wore out Metal side before Cars side on my first 45 at 10.
Legend.
Filmed up the road from me, Victoria road west in Hebburn Tyne and Wear
litterally sat here smiling my face off
now that's what I call METAL! ((;
I'd never seen this before. Thanks for posting.
God i love this best track ever
