- Here's a video about the exciting plant market in Funchal, Madeira (Mercado dos Lavradores) and the exotic plants and orchids that I bought there.
Exotic Plants : Agave attenuata, Heliconia & Tillandsia
Orchids : Sobralia & Neobenthamia gracilis
Welcome to my mini series of videos about Madeira plants, gardens and orchids. All 13 videos were filmed during my stay in Madeira in 2016.
Check out my hot-off-the-press book, Journal of an Irish Garden.
It is available at... www.lulu.com/shop/rachel-darli...
This is my very favourite place in Madeira! Wonderful fresh fruit and veg and reasonably priced plants, bulbs. My dad was a cimbidium grower and he bought all, bulbs from there whenever he went there on holiday and was very successful at raising them.
The market is great fun :)
That is a fun market to visit and they have a huge selection of orchids.
Thanks for watching, Blanca. A lot of the roots were bad at the market but there were some gorgeous orchids.
I'm happy you find the agave plants you wanted. They look very nice!
+Orchids & a Dutchy Thank you, Andrea :)

Fantastic Haul! what a store, the orchid selection looked outrageous..... Hopefully you're agaves will grow to be a big beautiful specimen someday! Happy Growing Rachel 🌺🌱
+Garrett Spring Thanks, Garrett :)
You know you hold the( Luck of the Irish) so I look for all of them to bloom for you. You found some great plants!
+johnnysmartin64 Not sure about the luck, but thank you, John.
I'm Martin Rachel. And you do a fantastic job. So you will probably bring these into bloom.I believe in you! LOL.
+johnnysmartin64 Okay, sorry, Martin :)
Portugal é Lindo!Volte sempre!Good orchids...
Obrigada. I love Portugal and hope to visit again!
happy that you have also a sobralia
Yes, but it is not doing so well. Nothing like your previous magnificent specimen, Eric.
that take time to grow , but you can do it , beter than me , I'm sure of that
Tell me how you grow yours!
Mine is now outside on my balcony on the sud , they need always water under the pot ( 1 or 2 cm )
when they are inside , they need lot of light and sun. I have a house with very high windows , (3m50) and the plant is on the front of the sud window for the winter . I put they outside from mei to septembre/october if is not freesing at night, like the cymbidium or coelegena crystata or stanhopea tigra. It's a very very easy orchid, for the substrat I use normal pot ground and orchid mix ( 50/50 %)
amazing market i wish if we had like it here
but we have alot of agave attenuata here
thanks
+mohannad al madanie Lucky you to have the agave, Mohammad :)
well that was fun.
+annaisgrowing :)
Andy's Orchids has huge sobralias and has a website he sells from so I am sure he would be happy to answer any questions you have and if you watch his video you will see just how really large some of these grow.
+Jackie Binkley Thank you, Jackie.
...great footage and nice finds! I really enjoyed my journey to the market with you...Thank you for allowing me to tag along! :)
+PictureMaria1 Thank you for coming along, Maria.
+Gardening at Douentza ...and incredible savings on the airfare....it's almost as if I didn't pay anything at all! LOL!!! :)
+PictureMaria1 But you didn't come back with any plants!
+Gardening at Douentza HEY YOU'RE RIGHT!!! I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!! LOL!!! (they're only a dream away. :)
Hi Rachel, looks like you did well with all your bargain plants, I don't have any growing tips on any of them they look pretty rare, not the usual kind of thing you'd find in England lol, But i hope they all surprise you and bloom, good luck, And happy growing :-)
+Rosemary457 Thank you :)
How great!
I really want a A. attentuata...I´m jealous! :D
Sobralia is easy to grow
I cultivate my Sobralia xantholeuca with warm days(+20°C) and cool nights(+14-15°C)(winter)! :)
In summer I put my Sobralia outside in the garden under a tree with a high humidity. :)
And good luck with the Heliconia! :)
Greetz from Germany
+Marvin Sanu Thank you for that good advice. I will try my sobralia outdoors. I may not even need the shade. lol.
+Gardening at Douentza you`re welcome! :)
I think that plant of Cymbidium tracianum was not really expensive considering its size! Actually... it is on my wish list :)
There was a Neobetamia in the orchid show I flimed in Florence :) Strange plant, too grassy for my taste!!
+Orchidaholic I would have bought the cym if I'd had more space. Yes, trachianum has been on my list for a while but it was so big...
I see... you need to find someone who needs to divide his plant ;)
Im enjoying watching your series :) I thnk you made a good choice with those plants, Agave attenuata is a wonderful plant, quite elegant compared to other species. I got a small one from Malaga a few years ago that sits on the windowsill now. ps do you know what species your Heliconia is? Ive been looking for scheideana and cant find it anywhere.
Thank you for watching and commenting. Gosh, this video is old and I don't even remember the heliconia. It is long gone. The airplant also died. It had a mealy infestation but all the others are doing well, including both the attenuatas in my greenhouse. Thanks for watching and happy growing.
This video came up in my feed, that market is just heaven! O my word! How are these plants doing ? I have a Sobralia which I don’t really do much with but it still flowers reliably. And I had Heliconia Rostrata once but I was attempting to grow it indoors and it got spidermites all the time and at that time I didn’t really know how to deal with spidermites and I ended up throwing the plant away. But I found a seller that has them and I’m doing to attempt it again! I’m also going to attempt the jade vine which I know might be crazy 😅
My sobralia flowered last summer. There's a video somewhere. Those are lovely plants that are very tempting to try. Let me know how you get on.
@@GardeningatDouentza Thanks Rachel, I think they might be ok my only concern is that the Jade Vine needs space because it flowers on old growth so pruning is an issue. The Heliconia should grow well indoors in winter and summer outside on the balcony my new spider mite solution is to dilute 4 table spoons of dishwashing liquid in 1 gallon of water and spray when I see any on the plant.
I like trying new plants and new ideas like growing my Vandas in pots rather than bare rooted and growing Phals outside even though people say it can’t be done. Cape Town has a very similar climate to the South of France, South of Spain. So we can grow a lot but many of the real tropicals need more attention in winter. There are areas of South Africa that are truly sub tropical.
I think Heliconia Rostrata should grow and bloom for you too it you summer it in your greenhouse and winter it in a bright spot indoors. Why I like Rostrata is I’ve seen pics of it flowering in containers on relatively short stems where the others can get very tall before they bloom and they get big.

how did u get them back?
Madeira is part of Portugal therefore in the EU. I brought them back in my suitcase.
+Gardening at Douentza How did you get it in the country without quarantine or anything?
+Brody Sayle Ireland and Portugal are both in the EU, which has agreement in place for internal movement of plants.
+Gardening at Douentza I love in England would it be fine if I bought a plant abroad?
+Brody Sayle live*
+Brody Sayle Yes, provided you buy it in an EU country. And provided that Britain has not left the EU by then. Better get your skates on!
Another orchid treasure-trove! I would have to have my money taken away BEFORE I went in or I would have none left. I am still very wary of buying orchids that have obviously 'traveled'. Questions I would like answered (but never get) - where did it's journey start? how long did that journey take? how long ago was that? how did it travel (plane, boat, air-conditioned unit)? where has it been keep since it arrived? who has been looking after it and if it's the seller, do they sound like they know what they are doing (or do they just 'sell')? Sometimes you just have to go by the condition of the plant and 'hope'. Out of those plants you bought, the only ones I know are the Tillandsias - never heard of the rest - so I'm NO HELP at all.
+Roger Frampton I think all these plants came from local suppliers, Roger. They were not imported. All good questions but I'd say the answers would not be forthcoming most places.
Absolutely NOTHING to do with orchids, but good luck this evening in the Six Nations Rugby. I hope the green shirts do well!
+Roger Frampton lol Thank you.
I would have lost all financial control and come back like some Victorian explorer with 20,000 plants....
+Astrid Not if you were flying RyanAir you wouldn't ;-)
I would take a boat back. I would paddle a little raft.
+Astrid I know how you feel. I look at the videos now and I kick myself that I didn't buy loads more. Actually they never weighed our bags on the way back. But I didn't know that they weren't going to beforehand (if you follow me!).
Oh I follow you! Rachel, I'd probably have thrown all my clothes in the trash and worn rags back so I could stuff more plants into my suitcase, haha! I'm curious - though Madiera is part of Portugal, is it still part of the EU? Is this how you managed to bring the plants back so easily? The only places I could fly out to and bring orchids back easily would be Puerto Rico and Hawaii probably... Though we have more land/climate space in the US overall.
+Astrid Yes, Madeira is in the EU so that is how I can bring plants back for my own use. Hawaii sounds good. When are you going? I heard you were planning to in that video about 'shit orchid growers say' :)
Muito mau....~
O que é muito ruim?
