How To Replace a Honda K Series Serpentine Belt Tensioner

  • Is your Honda K series making a horrible screeching noise? It might be the serpentine belt tensioner. In this video I show you how to replace a bad serpentine belt tensioner on a Honda K series engine. I'm doing this job in a 2004 Honda Element, but this method should work for most Honda K series engines.
    Unfortunately I couldn't find the info on my former tensioner that went bad. This is the one I replaced it with.
    Dayco Tensioner: www.amazon.com...
    Hopefully it lasts longer than its predecessor. For best results, I recommend the Honda part, but it does come at a price.

    Quick tip. If this ever happens to you, there's no need to replace the entire tensioner assembly. You can simply unscrew the 14MM bolt in the center of the pulley and change just the pulley, that's what is making the noise. As usual, an OEM pulley is ideal. The part number for the pulley is 31180-RAA-A01 and it is currently about $30 from Honda.

      @gruberhoffman Před rokem +2

      I wondered about doing this as there seems to be no problem with the tension part; it seems that my problem is a bearring issue with the pulley. I even wondered if pressing out the old bearring and installing a new one could be done without too much fuss on a 2003 Honda CRV.

    • @averyalexander2303
      @averyalexander2303 Před rokem +4

      @@gruberhoffman If it was mine, I'd just get a new OEM pulley and be done with it. Replacing the bearing separately is theoretically possible, but in my opinion, the difficulty of finding one of the exact right size and the potential for a problem if something goes wrong is too high to take the risk when a new pulley is only about $30. If it fails, you will be stranded and ruin the engine if you don't stop right away before it overheats.

    One thing that wasn't emphasized enough is how long that 17mm stud is. As a DIYer who buys specialty tools ONLY when necessary, I don't have a set of EXTRA deep metric sockets. 75mm deep is needed. The ONLY socket I could find, that wasn't part of a +$150 set,was CTA Tools 1717 Extra Deep Socket - 17mm. Also for a DIYer to do what you did, they'd need to jack the car up, remove the left front wheel, lower the car on a jack stands THEN support the engine with the jack.
    I did mine without removing the motor mount. I tried a dozen times to get the belt where it needed to be and was stymied each time by a twist or slack I couldn't see that stopped me from being able to get it over the last pulley. Finally I folded the belt nearly flat and shoved it down between the tensioner and water pump with a stick. Then I pulled it down over the main crank, temporarily it looped over the power steering pump to keep it in line and couldn't fall or get twisted while I got the belt around AC compressor. Removed it from the power steering pump to get it around the alternator pulley, then went for the tensioner and power steering pulley.

      As for the story, I just read that this morning. I was trying to wrap my head around it as well. I had the same van if you remember. The only thing I can think of is that it was a freak accident involving the 3rd row seat. I'm thinking somehow he got trapped under it and it locked into position. A horrible way to go, not to mention his poor parents.
      My 2012 Odyssey has a different rear seat set up than the previous generations. Perhaps they saw the danger and made the correction. My heart goes out to his family.
      The real failure there was the rescue response. They simply didn't get to him in time. He called twice!

The noise goes away when turning right and gets worse when turning left. I replaced the front right on my CB7 which as you know is no easy task and now I have the same symptoms but it has always sounded like it’s coming from the front left. Can these cause loss of power at idle and while driving? My crv 2010 has an odd sounding whine when it looses power during idle that I can hear happening exactly when the idle drops low. Wondering if belt tensioner/pulley being bad can torque down on the motor while running ??

    looking at this makes reemplacing the tensioner in my Grand Marquis a walk in the park.

    Eric, why does the new part need to be well new instead of just replacing the pulley itself or the bearing inside? Also I’ve done my serpentine belt on my car thanks to your videos and an idler pulley. Wasn’t easy on a big v8 but it was easier access but not much wiggle room to route the belt back on towards the bottom of the engine. Only had to remove the battery

    is there any possible chance that you have a part number for the belt tensioner please.

Its a bit snug but i see it let loose when i was torquing and my hand slipped and there it went.. What do you guys recommend?? Does that center bolt require to much torque its a bit snug on there....

    I did it in an 03 Element with the engine mount still in place.

      I did it on an 04, and years later an 08. It was easier on the 04 because the rubber was newer, I younger.

    I have a 2017 Accord 6 speed Manuel I have had to have my tensioner fixed twice since I've owned the car. It would make a loud whining sound. I have the new direct injection K Series. I'm not sure what my opinion is on the new direct injection K Series

    @Ericthecarguy i changed the tensioner assembly its all quiet until i put it on Drive and move the steering wheel that the new tensioner rattles and makes noise. What do you think i did wrong.

    Did you have a bad engine or trans mount? That engine shook a lot when you started it.

    What's next week, how to replace your floor mats? I remember when ETCG used to have long, good repair videos that were 20-45 minutes long. Meanwhile, SMA has just uploaded a 50+ minute long video.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  Před 6 lety

      Reason: CZcams. It's all about watch time these days. If people don't watch the entire video, it gets buried in the back yard, never to be seen. It's getting harder and harder to make a living on this platform as a result. At least for what I do. So if you want to complain to someone, complain to CZcams. BTW, if you notice, SMA isn't getting that many views either. Now you know why.

    Why not just replace the pulley with the bad bearings?

      But why replace a tensioner for a bunch more money then just a pulley or bearings if that's what's broken and much cheaper?

    • @ZBS91
      @ZBS91 Před 6 lety +8

      Because over time the Tensioner itself can get worn out. It's a kill two birds with one stone scenario for a good safety and longevity moment.

      I'm not sure if it's available for one, but also keep in mind the spring inside the tensioner that keeps the tension on the belt also wears out over time. czcams.com/video/ZSTZdTAB_As/video.html

    I did the same thing with my rsx but now the belt isn't lined up straight, it squeaks while driving when its reset, then at high rpms the belt jumps and then isn't aligned right with the grooves. Any ideas?
