Coriander, also known as cilantro or dhaniya, is an annual herb that's easy to grow from seed. It can be sown in the ground or in containers from spring onwards. Here are some tips for growing coriander:
    Soil
Coriander grows best in well-drained, fertile, moist soil. If your soil needs improvement, you can add compost or well-rotted manure.
    Sunlight
Coriander does best in full sun, but can tolerate some shade in the summer.
    Sowing
Sow seeds directly into the soil, rather than in trays and transplanting. You can sow seeds in groups of five, 20 cm apart between rows and plants. Sow seeds thinly, about 1 cm deep. Gently crushing the seeds before sowing can help speed up germination, which usually takes 7-20 days.
    Thinning
Thin out seedlings to 25 cm apart.
    Harvesting
To harvest leaves, sow small batches every month or so. You can remove the flower stems as soon as they appear to encourage leafy harvests.
    Pests
Aphids can quickly infest young coriander plants, stunting their growth. You can wipe off small colonies of aphids with a damp cloth, or encourage natural predators like ladybirds and hoverflies. Pesticide sprays are also available.
Coriander has a floral and citrusy flavor, and is often used in savory recipes. It pairs well with other spices, such as cumin.
Coriander has a long tap root, so it's best to avoid damaging the roots. Sow seeds in multi-cell trays, directly into the soil outdoors where they are to grow, or into pots. In the vegetable plot, sow seeds thinly 1cm deep in rows, 30cm apart. Seeds should germinate within 7-20 days.
