I,m from Salford too and on Easter Sunday 1990 i lived on the 9th floor of Blackfriars court across the Irwell ,me and my now ex Mrs were just getting up when it all kicked off with the riot .Later that night we walked with the baby still in her pram across the river to the prison ,it was a carnival sort of atmosphere with TV crews from across the world all lined up .The burger and hot dog sellers with their little trolleys came from town and were all parked up doing a roaring trade in food ,one told me he had never had it so good ! As the nights progressed the police helicopters were all over the place all night long .That week the weather was scorching hot and no way could you get to sleep with the noise and heat at the same time ,we walked over many times late at night just to cool down and to try and get the baby to sleep .Whole families were there with countless kids ,the saddest part was when the police entered the prison with a large haul of body bags expecting the worst .It was thought they would find many sex offenders dead but cannot remember if that actually happened in the end .The baby we tried to get to sleep those nights is now 33 married with two kids of her own by the way ,hard to believe its so long ago now .

When we were kids, we would get a bottle of something and get drunk, these days I think drugs are cheaper than booze and easier to get their hands on. These children need to see more the horror stories, and meet the people whose lives are ruined and desperate. It will never stop all of them but certainly may make a few stop and think. As always great guest.

It will get much worse, why do you think tens of thousands of Albanians are coming over the channel, the Albanians control the heroin trade in Europe now and are running the dial-a-gram services for Coke in many cities as well. "We must be mad, literally mad"

Nah. Booze in the UK is cheap and easy. Bottle of turbo white for 2 quid lol... You can also buy it everywhere... Now it's a different story in Ontario where I live you have to go to a government licensed LCBO establishment with ridiculous opening hours at a location of their choice and then pay a ridiculous socialist government inflated price for your alcohol... incidentally we have some of the worst alcoholic care in the world... So Clearly socialism doesn't work... I have already paid for about 3 years worth of rehab and I'm not even a heavy drinker just through my alcohol taxes

26:46.., I done 11 months and 17 days on remand in crumlin road prison, after about 3 months the life you had outside feels like a dream you once had, when I had visitors it felt like they were being beamed up from another dimension, prison does something to a man's head that disconnects them from the outside world.

Fascinating video, Sam. When Lee was talking about lines (torn blanket) being thrown out of a window, on Larry Lawton's podcast, he called lines Kites - torn up sheets are used to sling messages/magazines across to other cells in solitary.

A kite is toilet roll out your window let it blow to next door until it gets to where it ment to go when they get it we tie thin piece of green blanking shred it put 1 long piece of it on end then they pull toilet roll with thin piece beding on end then u got a strong line lol

That was really good. That Croft Bridge was there when I visited in the 1980’s. We went through it and saw the huge gym on the other side. We went to the kitchens then too and the prisoners had the floor drains up and were cleaning them. You could eat off the floor, the place was spotless. That was a brilliant vlog mate and it reminded me of the days when I’d go detached to Broughton Fire Station up the road and we’d deal with rubbish and assorted waste fires around there. Take care mate.

  • @formhubfar

We used to (swing lines) on D Wing which was the sentenced wing of the crumlin road, we used to use the string from the old itchy blankets and tie them onto the handle of out blue plastic pint mug, you'd shout out to the next cell and put whatever in the mug from baccy to toasties, put the mug out the window and swing it from side to side till the guy in the next cell caught it, he'd do the same until it got to the right cell, were about 40 cells each side of D Wing and 3 landings, Royal Mail would have envied our delivery techniques.

I've been in Strangeways numerous times as a paramedic. I can back up Sam and Lee's claims. It's not a holiday camp.
I can't speak for every Cat A prison, but I can assure you if you become seriously ill in Strangeways you are fucked. The screws and nurse will do their best. But then you've got the ambulance response time. So when the ambulance turns up at the main gate and you go into a double gated entrance, like an air lock. At this point the screws briefly check the ambulance, you have to confirm your identity and surrender your personal phones, the ambulance phone and your Airwaves radios. Then you enter the prison. Inside there's like a ring road. Now this isn't a ring road that you can go screeching around at 90mph to get to the wing. Every 100m or so is a gate. The screw escorting you has to unlock the gate, lock it again behind you. This goes on until you get to the wing. You park up and then you enter the proper prison. As Sam will tell you it's proper Victorian. Narrow passageways and steep stairs. No lifts. Going in as ambulance crew the pair of you could be carrying upto 70kg of kit between you so it's an embuggurance. You get to the patient, treat them and if they're still alive you have to extricate them down the stairs, no lifts there. Then they'll be double cuffed in the ambulance, you have to go back through all the gates, you go back to the main gate, get your personal kit back whilst the screws sort out the appropriate paperwork. So if you're having a heart attack or stroke it could be two hours before you eventually get to hospital.
I also liked the bit where you walked down to Counterfeit Street. The amount of litter there is a disgrace. And that's just the main drag. Go down the side roads and you're entering the Thirld World. Summat which I noticed you were too polite to mention, all these shops are run by a certain section of society which are an ethnic minority.
    A'l si thi.

Blimey that Vlog has brought back memories, once a shit hole always a shit hole, never changes round there. We used to buy a kebab and park the Capri up in the road next to the prison to eat it. Never took long for them to realise we were there, and let the verbals commence each side got as good as it gave ( pre riots this ) it was an exercise in Police and Prisoner bonding. Life time ago Sam, mind you in them days I would guarantee you would be approached by the cops walking around the prison like that ……these days no cops available for anything…. What a safe and wonderful country we live in. 😂

I went to see Bruce Springsteen years back in the Etihad, and there is a premier Inn type hotel that we stayed in. Me and my sister could see the prison from our room window. Proper sussy vibes, and i went the shop the next morning, and dound myself down that snide shop road... Jesus - I thought i was gonna get abducted 😮. Ibe never been so fast on my heels to get back the safety of the hotel. All the owners eyeballing me 😮, stood at their shop doors...loads of them 😂

very interesting.... hitting on how do we educate kids in school....... I am an ex HEROIN addict 17 YEARS clean, i would LOVE to put some kind of programme together, with a police/prison officer i would tell my story to every kid who would listen. i have been left with DENTURES P.T.S.D. there is a big list what comes with certain life styles, and so many missed years what could have been. i can't help but wonder if something was there in school, would that have put me off or does curiosity ACTUALLY kill the cat....
