    everyone is so amazed they don't have music. if you play anything enough times you can memorize it. every single marching band does it. the thing that IS impressive is the sound, strength and tone of the little bastards especially thw low brass. insane. they probably play upwards of 8 hours a day.

      +MrAnarchy26 95% of marching bands USE MUSIC, even in College!! They shouldn't but they do. I've played in lots of them and ONLY ONE made no music mandatory. Kudo's to those that expect a higher standard, it's just not as commonplace as you suggest.

      +Ken Willis I've been in several organizations as well as teach them. marching bands, good ones that is, will learn the music and not take it on the field with them. it's really not hard to memorize a piece of music. same with indoor competition ensembles.

      We dont memorize that much music in marching and pep band. And when we do its only a 60 measure piece with repeats. For concert standards the pieces go from 200 measures+. Keep in mind that these are elementary school students.

    Instead of whining about how "We suck", get over yourselves, get over your emotions and invest the time and energy necessary to be this good. A large part of the problem in American public schools (in general) and culture is the we value entertainment and amusement more than excellence. Some parents become enablers in this process, helping to keep their kids mediocre rather than push them toward excellence. There are American groups this good - just a few - but their priorities are different.

    @K0ELW A fair question, but it is not. They rehearse, mark, and revise the parts as needed, but do short contest performances (10-12 minutes) from memory to maximize unity and expressiveness. Unlike Suzuki (one to four parts played by all) an advanced band score has up to 40 independant parts. Rote teaching can't work with complex music scores, and besides, look at, and listen to the great emphasis on fundamental training. It is what it is, no "tricks", just lots of time, which they have.

    @HappyTrekkIrah Answer: 1) all clubs can practice as long as they wish after school, 2) the goal is to be good as possible, no excuses 3) students tutor and mentor each other, which builds a great ensemble, 4) you can only belong to one club, and are always expected to give 100%.

  • @MrGilliardMusic
    @MrGilliardMusic Před 11 lety +2

    Continuing: They value excellence, so they don't allow their kids to waste time texting and randomly surfing the net, but have them invest it in practicing. This is why Tyler S. Grant (Along the Beaches of Normandy), for example, is 17 years old and has his own music publishing company and is signed to FJH as a composer, he's also a clinician and plays multiple instruments. Excellence takes sacrifice. What are you willing to give up in order to be GREAT (and not just AVERAGE) ?

    @itsumo321 Před 13 lety +1

    @bene951 Here's an example of enthusiasm. Seika Girls HS Band that played at Midwest this year...the students are very proud of the fact that they rehearse 364 days a year. They love the program, the director, and all that they do. Seika has an alumna band of about 90 players that performs at Seika's main annual concert. They can't get enough! The MO for school clubs is this-learn to do one activity really well, in a teamwork setting, something to build pride and confidence...not a resume.

    @bene951 Sure...I assume we are all educators with student's best interest in mind. Japanese students are given a great deal of autonomy-I have seen kindergartners riding the Tokyo subway. Their schools are academically tough, so parents and adminstrators encourage club activity to build their life experiece. A small percentage of those music clubs strive for extreme excellence, and their successes actually attract students to those schools. They WANT to be there, because its thrilling-its fun.

  • @itsumo321
    @itsumo321 Před 13 lety +1

    @LaTex305 Please don't feel that way-these recordings are meant to inspire, and consider what can be, given enough time to practice an art or sport. In America we try, and do a lot of activities, and in Japan, students select one and give it all their time after school. We can, though, use their type of focus and intensity to make our rehearsals more effective. Tell your band friends to listen carefully, don't make the director repeat instructions, and come well-prepared for practice each day.

    @freecomkcf - Don't be hard on your own band or director. Our school culture promotes individuality and diversity, which goes against the idea of uniformity and self-denial needed for a tight and well-blended ensemble. You know all the speeches about "I" not being in "teamwork". And, in Japan, you can only be in one major extra-curricular club, because it takes all of your time. Band is rehearsed just like track or swimming-hours daily, sometimes weekends, etc. Different world, and results.

  • @itsumo321
    @itsumo321 Před 13 lety

    @bene951 The truth is simple. None of them study privately, or at home. That's the value of club activities...they are an all-consuming, personal, voluntary part of the school experience. All training is done by student section leaders (trained by the director). Individual, section, then full ensemble, in that order. Its all about "basic fundamentals" and time spent, 3-4 hours daily and weekends as needed. The baseball club works even harder, but no one claims "abuse" ..its fun, just for now.
