RIP Dennis Cockell 1948-2022
I can't believe he isn't wearing gloves. If he does that most days you'd think his fingers would be permanently black!
In Sweden, where I live, tattoos really didn't start to become fashionable until around the year 2000. Before that they were more or less only seen on sailors and people who had been to prison.
I think that's true for all of the western world.
Maybe it’s your new friends from abroad that’s pushing up the tally
@@Baltihunter Not really. Tatoos are very common on everyone, from all ethnic backgrounds.
How did you know if the people you saw with tattoos were sailors or had been to prison? Did you ask all of them?
@@Coolcarting Let's say it was a wellknown fact back then.
Still not widely accepted in the early 80's. Marc Almond had to cover his when on TOTP in '81.
It’s not really widely accepted nowadays. It’s still seen as grubby and dirty.
People still cover them up for interviews. It’s quite the fad to have tattoos though.
And let’s face it, there are still some awful ones out there. And a lot are going to look terrible as people age. :)
I guess as long as people are happy with them…
@@Liofa73I’d say it is widely accepted now no one bats an eyelid except maybe boomer generation lol. I see many public servants including a great number of police officers with them. Who cares really as long as they do their job/are a law abiding person. Must admit makes me wonder why people choose what they do - a friend’s teenager got one as soon as she turned 18 which read ‘That’s life’. Not sure what that’s about given she’s barely lived yet lol
@@moominmay maybe she’s a fan of Esther Rantzen…
I was tattooed by him in '98. He also had a tattoo shop opposite the Raymond review bar in Soho, Diamond Jack's. The only one allowed in Soho at the time. Now there are loads.
He tattooed Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols.
Now you stand out if you don't have tattoos.
I agree mate.
I'm the only father at my child's school who doesn't have a tattoo.
About a quarter of Brits have tattoos today.
@@istvanvilmos8400You’re probably the only father at school. Oh wait….
@@RealUlrichLelandwow us that all I thought it would be more, how do you know who has tattoos? Some people who got them in their youth on a whim are now embarrassed because they don’t fit in with their lifestyle hide them.
Dennis Cockell was responsible for some of the 'Stray Cats' early Tattoos, and is name checked on the rear of the 'Runaway Boys' picture sleeve from 1980.
That tattoo removal looks rough, they've basically burned out a slice of her skin. Nowadays they pulse the laser so it doesn't actually burn you
The old Carbon lasers were brutal, but very effective. Sometimes the skin had to be stitched following certain removal procedures in those days.
That first tattoo is actually so cool oh my gosh!!
I did the transfer drawings for a shop in St Pauli (Reeperbahn) Hamburg, Germany.
That was in the 90s and a lot of the actors from the musicals going on at the time came and got one. A judge was a regular and over the time of 3 moth I watched his progression to a full sleeve.
A girls designed her own back sheet and I watched the beginning of it.
It was based on an MC Escher cut(air, water and soil..sorry bad translation). Fish in a pond with the reflection of the sky and leaves floating on the surface.
I'll finally get my first tat this year: a cicada as in Texas 2024 in a new emergence.
Wow i love seeing the old acetate stencils- it’s exactly the same way you make a fancy intaglio print ( like Rembrandt used to make with copper plate) genius use of old school materials before the stencil printers came on the market. I’m not old enough to have ever seen this method in person so this is really cool :) thanks bbc
The difference between someone with tattoos and someone without tattoos, the one with tattoos won’t make comments about one without
Do you have tattoos?
Same as one legged people don't make comments about two legged people. People comment about the abnormal ones, why would anyone comment on normal?
I see a lot of idiots, who wear shorts and tee shirts in the winter. Guess what, they have tattoos. “ look at my tattoos”.
A friend had tattoos on his hands. Told me he regretted them after various failed job interviews. Saved for a long time for laser removal . Big change in him after he had them burnt away. Nice guy.
@@HarryHewitt-lh8xx I was on holiday by myself in Dominican Republic some years ago, and I met two German lads who were covered in tattoos and had piercings everywhere. I saw them a couple of days later in the evening and they were looking a bit troubled so I asked them what was wrong. They said they had failed to make any friends on holiday. I had to explain to them the sad reality that some people naturally find their appearance threatening, which was such a shame, as they were both genuine friendly guys. They were in tears.

eh? that slipped my mind. i only came for tattoos. what drew you in?
On the tv, it shows her and a man with his shirt off behind her
I haven't seen it since this morning, maybe they've changed the thumbnail?
Different thumbnail on phone
@@brianmmacu Oh no it's the same thumbnail. My mind just didn't go 'there'. I only clicked because I was curious about what the tattoos would look like.
Tattoos=pure conformity
Hehe I remember this as it sparked up a row again as I had gotten my first and second tattoo's that summer with me name on arm and "skins" on upper arm and me parents went beswick over it as I was only 13 and got them both done for £1 on Brighton pier whilst on a day trip with the lock up childrens home I was in... So on home leave the time this went up on the telly me old girl started kicking off about it then me father got involved going at me too and I went home to the home early much aggrieved with life...
Tattoos...upmarket? Hardly.

Elaine got that femme fatale thing going on
Nice lines 😊
I’ll never forgot one of my friends talking about tattoos and saying “Why would anyone want to look like a colouring book?” - always made me chuckle.
Wow so original how smart lool your friend must be like a scientist or something 😂🤣
Go out & buy a heavily patterned shirt that you like, put it on and never take it off for the rest of your life. That's what a tattoo will feel like.
Not really. They feel like collecting peoples artwork and having a piece of someone you respect forever.
@@minamogwai5400 But not may people stay the same forever. I know because I'm pushing 60. When I was in my twenties I believed I'd stay loyal to the things I liked forever but I didn't. None of us do. If we did you'd see old guys walking around with skateboards under their arms. Your tastes change dramatically as you mature. Do as you wish but try and think beyond the moment.
if you regret your tattoo, then you weren't a candidate in the first place, and should never have had one
You're not old enough to comment on that
Nobody wants to wear what they were wearing 20 years ago, let alone 30-40 years ago. People who get tattoos somehow think they won't age (or, more likely nowadays, don't think and just follow the herd).
Oh man a young Dan Schneider
😂😂
Well, I for one would like to know how Elaine's life turned out bless her.
So, Elaine are you here? 🌞
Seems like the sort of West London gal who would have enjoyed herself throughout the eighties before getting hitched and settling down
As with all art, quality, style, and placement matter. Tattoos can be stylish, sophisticated, and sexy, or they can be trashy, base, and unattractive.
No.
My sister got her (then) husband's name tattooed in a similar area to Elaine here (4:50)
Well, when Damien ran off with another woman, Kim went back to the tattooist and got his name covered up with some roses.
My brother got his wife's name tattooed on his leg, and both siblings turned to me and asked why I didn't have my wife's name tattooed on me somewhere.
I said that I *hate* being jabbed with needles (- oh, these past few years...!) of any sort.
And, thus, if you think I'm getting Tjandrawasih's name tattooed across my chest, forget it!
The only names I have tattooed on me are my mom and grandmas name.. getting a significant others name like a husband or wife's name tatted on you is like a cardinal sin.. it always ends up cursing the relationship, lol.
@@eldiablo3794 I had my fiancé’s name tattooed on me but it was a memorial tattoo after I lost her.
I’ve had a tattoo for 50 plus years and I’d miss it if it wasn’t there. Although a tattoo is something that you’d be better be sure off before you mark yourself forever.
The good old days of tattooing
They called it hygienic oh wow how times have changed
No nitrile gloves 😂
Today is just overkill. They didn’t have outbreaks of infection then.
That guy with the Freddie Mercury moustache
No gloves worn then 😬 well known artist though, I’ve heard the name a lot before. R.I.P. Dennis.
No rubber gloves 🧤
No gloves yet said it’s hygienic
Different times.
"Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say have you met Lydia
Oh, Lydia, the tattooed lady"
Poor lady having that thing on her chest, for 30 years hating it - effecting her in a negative manner.
Didn’t realise yakuza tattoos were popular! Hahaha
I like tats but I wouldn’t get any what I really would regret later on so so far I only got one
I didn’t realise the late 70s was the dawn of high end tattoos. I thought it was the late 80s. Likewise with the tattoo removal.
I’ve seen 2 removed tattooos and they were a smudge and scar was left the size of the tattoo..people look as if they’ve been burned ,you can guess that it’s a tattoo removal..
Of course they’ve been burned, tattoo removal is done by laser lol. It fades over time
So nice you don’t have to worry about tattoos stopping you getting a job or people seeing you a different way these days (for the most part)
Elaine Jenkins is a saucy one.. a bit naughty. RIP Mr Cockell.
5:05 you little devil you 😈😏
I wonder if any of these people are still alive.
It was 1980, so very likely
Come on man it was only 44 years ago lool
Yes of course.. people just looked more aged back then, the guy with the eagle tattoo is probably in his 70's today.
I know plenty of blokes in there 60s and 70s who will have got tattoes around this Time but was very rare for women, only women i know with tattoos in there 60s got them later on in life. Times have changed. I went to the doctors about 4-5 year back and the doctor had tattoo sleeves on each arm
acetate and graphite....oh boy !
Imagine all the men at the club when they see that bird 🤣
I imagined the comments section would be full of folk feeling compelled to tell us all how much they dislike tattoos and how unique they are to not have one. I was right :)
It was more fun in the days when you feared dying of AIDS from getting a tattoo and when there wasn't Google Images to steal designs with.
The advent of the disposable needle, the disposable plastic everything covered things and the internet for comparing design inspirations changed everything, for the better, but taking some of the fun out of it.
I’m 58 and have never wanted one. Only rarely do I see one that has been well done and is artistic. Most are just awful scribbles.
Why?
art
Never understood it each to there own
Bet you can’t get tattoo removal on the nhs these days
Quite rightly. Why should the taxpayer fund the mistakes of idiots? You bought the tattoos, you pay for it removing.

Never met a financially struggling tattoo artist. But I have met many people that shouldn't be tattooists as they are not artists.
Go to an artist you've chatted to and trust and get on with.
Don't pick it out of a book.
Make your first one meaningful (but not about a significant other)
See your tattoos as a life journey, so one you don't like anymore was just who you were.
It REALLY hurts. Lies 😂😂😂
To think all those hip and trendy 20-30 somethings of 1980, (a year I remember very well like it was yesterday as a 16 yr old) would be around 70 -80 years old now 😮 scary how time takes no prisoners.
Hated tats then, still hate them now.
Me too. Tacky

I have a tattoo, it’s a dedication to my wife in Chinese script on my left forearm, as she is Chinese. I picked out the typeface and had it done at a tattooist in Banbury. Very quick and reasonable. I love it more now than the day I first got it, just like I love my wife more and more as well. I may yet get a swallow as I’m in the navy and coincidentally her name translates to the bird from the Chinese language, very traditional nautical tattoo and quite apposite for her too.
Fascinating mate.
Chinese script? You have no idea what it says, then. Probably spells out "cock".

I've seen it. I speak Chinese, it says 'I'm a homo and I especially like hairy men.'
Is that really a thing these days? To have ONE tattoo??😆
Hilarious.
When the Romans came, Britons were covered in tattoos; when the Christians came, they were covered in tattoos again; when the Normans came…
7 layers of skin?? We penetrate 4?? I thought we have 3 layers and penetrate 2 layers! He had no gloves on🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 the earth must have been flat in the 80s as well🤣
What they didn't mention here, is that the ink goes into your lymph nodes and stays there for ever, and can cause lymphoma.
I think I must be one of the few people who hate to see tattoos. I honestly think that however “ well” they have been executed ,they still make the recipient look like an ex con. I won’t even comment on face tattoos. When I was a kid my mum and dad would take me to places like Bridlington and Whitby. There I often saw old tanned fishermen sitting on the quayside mending nets. Almost all had a faded tattoo of an anchor or ship or sweethearts name. It was a cultural thing and fitted right in with the single earring many of them had . They looked the part .
Today they are everywhere and look particularly awful on young women. I think this trend was all begun by Paula Yates………enough said.
"But in body decoration we are still a long way behind the primitive tribes of Africa and Asia. They painted their bodies to scare away demons..." Thats a lie🤣

One thing bothers me about tattoos. It’s when people say ‘classy tattoos’ as if the term is a thing which actually exists.
By their very nature, tattoos are the polar opposite of anything related to being classy.

The definition of classy is stylish and sophisticated which tattoos can be.
@@minamogwai5400 Tattoos sophisticated?? Now there’s a juxtaposition if ever there was one.
@@carouselcakes6237 it’s art. I know many people who would say art can be Sophisticated
@@minamogwai5400 Nobody said they weren’t art. What we’re talking about here is the ridiculous notion that they can be considered classy.
The tattoos on people with an order for a Chinese takeaway is hilarious. In your 20's, this is so "cool", in your 50's they look ridiculous.
Around 1980, there was a teatime news item on tattoos where a woman revealed her naked tattooed breast to the camera. She reminded me of Kate Bush and I'm sure it was either on Look North or Nationwide. I really thought this was going to be it after all these decades. Ah well, maybe it was just a wet dream I had about Kate Bush. Kids, eh? 😂
The tattoos from then look naff, so the Hipsters tattoos of today will look naff in the saggy future 😂
