No, I'm pretty certain they're pelicans, it's a historic thing with their beak pressed upon their chest. Supposedly they cut into their own breast for some reason that I don't remember (to feed their babies?). It's a weird belief from the past.

I think the marble top will make all the difference and set it off with a new white porcelain knob . Try just the top first and try it against the wallpaper . Elaborate stencils or floral painting might make it look too over fussy in a granny chic style. ( I'm a granny but I don't like that look). There's already a lot of different floral patterns going on in the room. It might look too chintzy and not very relaxing for a bedroom?

Stephanie, I restored a few small side tables like yours and have used architectural details on them and then paint. It makes them more ornate and in keeping with your decor. A place here in the US is Architectural Depot where there is a wide selection of things to choose from. You can also put gold leaf on the pieces after you’ve applied the paint. It’s so beautiful!!!! Just a suggestion!!! Much love 😘❤️❤️❤️

😊Great idea. A wooden applique could 💯% jazz it up. A flipper/crafter popped up on my algorithm that had a several sheets of small molds: Baroque trims & borders, architectural details like medallions, bees & bugs, crowns, etc. They sprinkled cornstarch in the mold & popped in a fast drying clay. She also used gold paint & a black wax to make 'em look elegantly aged. She elevated curbside trash to treasure💎.

Once the concrete ring is poured and the base fixed into place you could try ‘painting’ the outer concrete ring with a mix of moss and yogurt, the dairy proteins make the moss grow really quickly covering the base and making it look as if it’s been out in the elements for a long time.

TIP FOR THE SIDE TABLE MOTIF:
Have Philip use the green leaf motif in the wallpaper as a guide for a small painted border (darker green) around the face of the side table and surround that with coral colour roses or peonies without the stems.
It will give the needed lift to the piece without being overly powerful and it will mimic that particular motif that's in the wallpaper! 😊

I agree with other comments that the fountain has flamingoes not pelicans. The beak is hooked and far shorter than a pelican's. It is still going to look lovely. You could cover the new base in yoghurt to age it. It is a quick way to get statuary looking old. The hellebores are fantastic. I have lots in my garden, they are as tough as old boots and spread seeds really easily. See if you can get some pink or purple ones to go with the white. Lovely dinner too, mush mash is a great way of describing it. 🙂

The problem is that it seems like there is no prep done before painting walls or furniture. Some areas need to be sanded or repaired with putty so that they look nice and even after the paint job and that is what Natti is pointing at. Also, removing the hardware like knobs makes it easier to paint and look more finished.

With the fountain base looking a different color to the center pieces, you could "dry brush", paint, the base, to match the center piece, I have done such a process and it was successful. Then it will look uniform and you will be much happier with it. Then, when it's nearly dry, you could rub some "charcoal ash", into the grooved, patterns, on the base, to create that used cement, textured, look.

Suggestion…….when raising the pelicans up on a Plinth, why not make a little plinth of rocks like a Scottish cairn ( smaller obviously) so it looks like the pelicans are standing on rocks in the water. Also can’t you get them to spray some lime mortar or concrete mix all over the base, to mess it up a bit/ age it….even stick the odd rock up against it…..there must be a way to disguise it.

It needs a tiny moulding with a bit of gilding & possibly some decoupaged flowers on the front &/ or sides to coordinate with the headboard etc to give it some charm. A little tassel hanging from the door knob too-:)

I cracked up when Natie said the table is still a little ugly! Thank for saying in Natie! Now to see if Phillip can change that.
I agreed that the fountain base is pretty ugly until you assembled the fountain. With it aged and partly obscured it's going to work fine. The detail on the rim works with the detail in the fountain.

Those are definitely hellebores! Also known as Lenten Roses, if you’d like to keep with the ecclesiastical theming near the chapel. One of my favorite sights in the garden this time of year

    Hi Steph
I agree the birds on the fountain are not pelicans. Could be flamingos but they have bent beaks. Maybe they are egrets.
Yes the poor little table is ugly, please help it. Philips art work and maybe a gold out line on the body, or some moldings painted gold

Maybe do a "Treillage" on the bedside table... since your bedroom scheme looks like 18th century/ country house. The paint on it also reminds me of Treillage...

You do realize that most English gardens do not have foundtains that look like scupture (although I can name exceptions), most want to look like natural springs from the rock.

The too white fountain base. So easy. Rub it down thoroughly with dirt and leave on the excess, it will help the moss to grow on it.

You could grow hardy geraniums close to the base of the fountain. There are many types of hardy geraniums, different heights even alpine types, different beautiful colours and they self seed and spread. ❤

The fountain will be wonderful...a whimsical addition to the jardin d'englaise....but remember....only one fish! Btw: the birds on the fountain are Flamingos...not Pelicans. Natty is such an honest sounding board....it is refreshing to hear an independent opinion. That kettle is perfect....as you said, the cost of room service for a cup of tea can be steep....pun intended! Hugs and extra cuddles to Lancelot. He has such a delightful personality. Truly a wonderful addition to the family. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦🫶

I have a collapsible silicone travel kettle that packs up even smaller than Stephanie's new one, but the problem is that the lid falls off if you pour it too fast. Still, I never travel without it, and it has saved me so many times! The real issue now is accommodations that don't have a mini fridge for milk 😆
