    To a comment by you about travelling by sea to the islands: the great writer Lawrence Durrell quotes an old Arab proverb, namely that the soul cannot travel faster than a camel. I have only managed that once, from Piraeus to Chania, an overnight sail. Arriving in Souda (the port for Chania) terribly early in the morning is an experience in itself: sun rising, the weather is cold but warming up quickly, life begins. It's a great way to travel :) - if you have the time then it certainly beats flying.

    What great tips for travel to Greece! I come every year and stay at least a month, but I go to more remote islands (Northern Sporades-Alonissos/Skopelos). I’ve twice come end of August and stayed for September-including last year. But I prefer June because if you’re going remote, there are less ferries running later. Small islands also stop restocking some supplies (including restaurants) and my biggest thing is that fruits and vegetables are better earlier in summer. I can’t have gluten (surprisingly this can be unexpectedly challenging on small islands) so fresh produce is mostly the main staple of safe food for me. The tomatoes and onions are actually worth a red eye into Athens where I overnight, a flight into Skiathos (where I sometimes have to overnight too), and the ferry to Alonissos. Lol. They’re that good.
    I find remote travel in Greece to be a hassle, I’ve had both cancelled flights and ferries (and missed my flight home), but I will tell you it is absolutely, no doubt, worth it. It’s a dream destination.
    (And PS-I now try to get to Athens two days before I leave with the U.S. covid testing requirements.)

    • @agirlandherpassport
      @agirlandherpassport  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you! Oh the vegetables are amazing here. The not stocking up on the remote islands is definitely a thing. This is definitely not the case on the less remote islands as they have larger year round populations. Two days with COVID testing is a great plan and Athens is always a good choice.

    When I went to the Greek islands years ago, landlords would be waiting at airports and by the ferry ports, to offer accomodations to arriving tourists. I never made advance reservations for a place to stay, not even for the night of arrival - but those were pre-Airbnb days. This arrangement gave travelers a lot of flexibility regarding making their plans to island hop. My question is: is it still the same? Or would you recommend to make advance reservations for accomodations? What about the ferries: book in advance, or book once over there?

    • @agirlandherpassport
      @agirlandherpassport  Před rokem

      It doesn’t happen much as most people now book in advance. If you are coming in the high season, I wouldn’t come unless you have a hotel reservation as Greece is so popular now you might be sleeping on a beach. Ferry reservations are the same. If you come in late September or October then you could do this and can do it in May and possibly June.

      Direct from Kos to Naxos is impossible. You can take an indirect ferry but it would take a long time. It would be easier to go back to Athens and then take the ferry or fly.
