Yamato Two steps from hell

  • The Yamato battleship was quite a masterpiece of Japanese naval engineering at that time, but quite a failure as a military weapon against the might of the US navy. The sinking of Yamato represents the desperate struggle of the Japanese empire, especially its soldiers and sailors, against the world's superpower across the ocean. I watched this movie and find the marvelous appearance of the Yamato and the brave fighting of the Japanese sailors quite fit with the heroic and epic rhyme of "Victory". So I put some editing with this music and here is the result.

I will always admire bravery and the courage of fighting men...no question about that.
But I don't like to act like an imbecile and die for nothing! Life is priceless and potent and death is the quite opposite. So be brave and fight hard when you can make a difference and not just punch in the air. Aim your blow where it hurts or Live and fight another day!!!
There is a time for everything...a time to fight, a time for being patience, a time to live and even a time to die. But you have to chose wisely.
We will miss all this brave men...if they where living and their time was spent wisely they would make a tremendous impact...to bad that they did have bad leaders and bad guidance.

@peace leader : I agree. My dad was a USAF Vietnam Vet navigating B-52 missions. He never talked much about the war and I never asked out of respect, but I remember he said he had a lot of nightmares from those days. He taught me the histories of war and how brutal they are, bringing out the most savage in all of us. I think diplomacy should always be preferred over war. He was real into history and our conversations made me appreciate history in general and the various freedoms of we have in America.

Japan was proud of their biggest ships, the Yamato class. The two sister ships IJN Yamato and IJN Mushashi were the only ships ever to be equipped with the 18in turret. The Yamato class was superior in its own way, but by the time it had seen action, carriers were already the basic need for a navy.

I am Japanese, but my grandfather (deceased), who lived in my hometown of Hokkaido, worked as a
boiler engineer on the battleship Yamato during the Pacific War. After being rescued by the US military, he surrendered and returned to his homeland.
During his lifetime, I heard that his grandfather was a member of his generation who was selected for the Zero Fighter, Special Attack Ohka, and Special Attack Kaiten, and died in battle.
I realized once again that the war should not be forgotten, and I felt that we should pass it on to future generations. In my hometown of Hokkaido, my paternal grandmother is still alive and well at the age of 91, but every August, she tells her great-grandchildren that she will never forget the anniversary of the end of the war.
There is a difference between desperate and desperate, but it may be rude to say thank you for fighting.
This Japan that they left us will not lose to something like Corona. I can't afford to lose.
Those who died in war must never be forgotten, nor should they be forgotten.

on April 7th, 1945 would be the last day the Yamato ever saw action. she was the largest ship in history, with 65,000tons standard and 71,000tons max. she would still be the world's most powerful warship if she hadn't sunk. it took over 250 warplanes, 19 torpedoes and 21 bomb hits to sink her, making her the most heavily armoured ship in the the history of the battleship.

Today, all US battle carrieres are larger than Yamato, some torpedos and bombs were extra, because Yamato was sinking but american's just can't stop while she was still on surface. 400 aircraft units was serious overestimate of Yamato but americans had they ready, organised and still have enough fighters to guard own ships so they send them. Americans attacks were perfectly organised and torpedo and bombers attacks were flawless synchronized. Each wave were escorted by fighters witch uses all machine guns to silence ship air defence cannons. Japan's ofiicers carried only about main guns crew, the madium and anti-aircraft crew were totally unfamiliar with they weapons, 150 anti aircrafts guns sounds awesome but more than half was terribly located because can't aim target without outside follow commands. They can't see targets , only can fire a sector where should appear airplane. All anti aircrafts guns were unarmored nd open so gunners were easy target to fighters weapons, Hellcat have 8*12,7 mm machine guns , it mean 2000 bullets during 10 secons of fire while it attack, and each group of bombers and torpedo Avengers were escorted by 4 Hellcats.

It was her sister the musashi who took 19 torpedoes and 17 bombs, however the torpedoes were hitting her both port and starboard so they didn't focus damage enough to sink her as quickly.

Had The British been the ones taksed with sinking the Yamato, they would have sent wave after wave of British Lancasters from the famous dam busters squadron carrying 22,000lb. Tall Boys and Grand Slam earthquake bombs and sink her;using both direct hits and near misses to cause more than enough catastrophic damage to overwhelm and sink her using the same methods and tactics they used when they sank the German Battleship Tirpitz.
It took only six superheavy 22,000lb.bombs 3 Tall Boys and 3 Grand Slams for a total of six bombs to sink the Tirpitz.
It would have taken more than six Tall Boys & Grand Slams to sink the Yomato;probably like...12 Tall Boys & Grand Slams to sink her.

However, when I think of the person who fought for Japan with the intention of dying like this video, I was encouraged to do my best even in hard days. The lessons from her demise, and that of her sister ship Musashi, parallel the naval lessons of the entire 2nd World War. The RN first taught us at Taranto. Then the IJN taught us again at Pearl Harbor and with the demise of Royal Navy "Force Z'. Finally, full circle with the sinkings of Musashi and Yamato. That lesson being: even the greatest of battleships (or other surface warships) will not survive live combat without abundant air cover/protection.

But there was no proof to the theory. rearming world class navy on the basis of theory with no tangible proof to it is quite costly.
See even Mitchells experiment was not conclusive, true he sunk a BB, but these were old pre-war German vintage, that was left in a state of disrepair since approximately 1916, had no active damage control, no AA defence, and stationary to the boot.
And yet it took days of slow flooding to sink it. Had it been crewed by skeleton crew without suicisidal tendencies it would stay afloat.
