Ah Bavaria! It’s beautiful, it’s German, and it’s about 5,000 miles away. Lucky for us, settlers brought Germany to Texas and named it Fredericksburg.
Downtown Fredericksburg is a collection of shops offering just about everything you can imagine. From smell good stuff and candles at Circle E Candles to refreshing beers on tap at Fredericksburg Brewing Company and more!
When it’s wine time, scoot on over to Becker Vineyards - it’s just what the doctor ordered (Dr. Becker, that is…) This winery was established in 1992 by endocrinologist Richard Becker and his wife Bunny, and over the years they’ve gained quite a few awards and celebrity fans (including Lady Bird Johnson!) Stop in for a glass of wine, a tour of their vineyards and wine cellar, and a visit to their Lavender gardens out back.
One thing you can’t miss when visiting is the National Museum of the Pacific War, which (believe it or not) is the national museum commemorating the Pacific combat of WWII…all the way out here in Fredericksburg. The museum has complete war machines, like a B-12 bomber, tanks and a Japanese pygmy submarines. Be sure to see the Japanese Garden of Peace that was donated to the museum by the Japanese as a sign of peace.
For outdoor-minded folks, head north of town to Enchanted Rock, a stunning pink granite dome rising out of the ground. Climb to the top to take in the stunning view of the surrounding Hill Country, and once you’re there, delve deep into the cave in the backside of the rock for a more intense adventure.
You probably already knew about the amazing view at the top of Enchanted Rock, but I bet you didn’t know that Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is filled with rock climbing galore. My favorite is to top rope up Turkey Peak, which is near the dome of Enchanted Rock. You can find various rock climbing guides here.
If you are looking for the full German food experience, look no further than The Auslander, an authentic German restaurant in the heart of town. Here’s where you’ll find all the good stuff: Snitzel, Sausage and BEER! Prost, y’all!

mostly t-shirt shops and wine drinking now. I miss the old Fredericksburg.
‘Austin Daytripper’ talk about a “blast from the past”…👍
Season 1 Episode 5. But it's worthy of a rewatch.
Had no idea the show used to be called "The Austin Daytripper", but it kinda makes sense. Start local/small and branch out...BIG branching out!! LOL
Yes, although he lives in Georgetown
I used to go to Enchanted Rock when it was privately owned in the 70's We pitched our tent on top of the dome and the biggest storm came through it was a terrifying night followed by a gorgeous day. It was actually the first time I saw a rattlesnake he was up there on top with us.
That’s a cool story , I went last year for the first time and I loved it . But never did I imagine camping up there , I’m sure y’all saw so many stars !?
Chet looks so young! Good to see these episodes i never saw on PBS 🎉
Love Chet & his excellent team & sponsors too !
Fredericksburg is a great city to visit, always a awesome adventure.❤ The people are so friendly and kind.
2024, was just here 6 months ago. ❤❤❤ can't wait to go back & spend more time. Definitely a 2 day trip to see everything ❤
I also like the trail on the left side of enchanted rock. Theres a little oasis there. After that, take the perimeter trail clockwise to turkey peak
Basically a Texas tourist trap. Overpriced strip mall in the middle of nowhere surrounded by grape farms.
Rathskeller Bistro is my favorite restaurant in Fredericksburg. It's small but the food is amazing.
Love it. Been to the top and the Caves. Great Video.
ENCHANTED ROCK! Let's go, Kelbo!
It is fun
Cool
The pioneer museum is nice too
Fredericksburg ❤ is my favorite place ❤
Try Otto's or Derlindenbaum. Missing out on Quintessential Chocolate and Messena Hof.
Linda is high on that photo in the credits:P
There is also an elephant habitat just outside the city that lets you get close and interact with them. (Not a zoo)
It is about $100 per person I think, (give or take?) and you need reservation to take part.
I used to live across from the museum when it was under construction on Austin St. My brothers and I would sneak in and climb all over the tanks and have our own battles. Almost got caught several times by security
The title says season 1, episode 5, but the description notes it was in season 5. Any clarification?
Definitely season 1,
@@jasondelaney6849 I figured after watching. Chet looked so young.
Chet looks like a college freshman haha
I almost was.
@@TheDaytripper 😂 👍🏼
As a German, I always have to laugh when I see places and restaurants like this. Germany doesn't look like that. There are restaurants that look like this in Bavaria, but there are only tourists there. The food isn't German either, it's Bavarian.
Good place to get beer. But I would not eat there.
Ya hallo folks…Fredericksburg ist eine nette Texas burg
Prost, my guy.. or Prosit! never "cheers" in F-burg. 🙃
BABY CHET!!!
It says Fredericksburg
Chet has hair......kinda.
Been awhile since I’ve had a good meal in Fredericksburg. Certainly not at the Auslander. I guess when you walk in with a camera crew they step up their game. It’s not bad, just not good. Better to just enjoy the vibe
My ex-husband Bruce climbed it

Don't eat at Otto's in Fredericksburg. Terrible.
