  • I spend a week with the 2023 Honda Civic Type R to see what it's like to live with. With 315 hp all going to the front wheels, everyone knows the 2023 Type R was going to be fun to drive. But what is it like to actually daily drive it? Overall, it's a great daily driver as long as you come into it with the right expectations, but there are a few important things to highlight about the experience. What do you think about the 2023 Civic Type R? Thanks to Honda for providing this vehicle to review!

    Cool that you still drive these amazing rides Matt. Used to watch all the reviews way back. I dont even know which Civic Type R looks better, this or the older gen. They both look sweet in their own way. After getting rid of my MK5 VW GTI, I will forever be a fan of hot hatches. So much fun to drive in a busy city, compared to a bigger sports car I feel. You can just put your foot down and rip around, all zippy, while not looking so obnoxious because they aren't super fast. 😂 Really love that a few companies still offer a fun manual car in 2024. Civic Type R, GR Corolla, VW GTI (or Golf R), Focus RS. Slightly modded, I would love any of those. Such a fun style of driving. 🔥

I'm finally financially at a point now that i've been graduated and working full time for a few years where I can afford it but just don't wanna play so far above MSRP for a used 2020 or 2021 but I prefer the aggressive styling. Thank you for the informative video! I've been going back & forth trying to decide which new car to buy. For price, practicality and fun, I was thinking the Civic SI which has a wonderful 6-speed albeit a little down on power rated 200 hp. (If only the SI had 220-240 hp). The hot hatches don't have the 'down on power' problem, obviously, but they lack the overall thrift of the SI. Sitting here, I still can’t decide! My local Honda dealer is willing to give me a good deal on a Type R. These 1st World problems make me realize how lucky we are!

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I'm glad the video was informative for you! If you can get a good deal (MSRP or less on a Type R), I'd say take it since it's pretty much zero risk. You either love it and keep it or sell it for an Si and at the very least break even on the Type R, or possibly even make a profit selling the Type R. Even used 2022 Sis seem to be selling for MSRP still.

    • @NvSrAgE679
      @NvSrAgE679 Před 9 měsíci +1

      The Si and the Type R are so very different. I had a 2015 Civic Si and a 2018 Civic Si HFP. The Si severely falls off on the top end. I now have a 2021 Civic Type R and it pulls so much harder all the way through the gear and doesn’t fall off at all. Not to push you into a higher priced car, but the Type R is so much better. My advice would be a 2020 or 2021 after the refresh.

    Coming to this video a bit late, but I’m curious if you were spending a lot of time in +R mode when you commented about the lack of obvious traction control. I spend most of my time in Individual mode with the suspension in Comfort because the roads here in Michigan are lousy. When I occasionally put it in +R mode it definitely feels like the TC is much less intrusive. In rain and with my winter tires still mounted I can break the tires loose in just about every gear when in +R…

    The problem is you cannot test drive them for the most part, there are no paper brochures, they are all sold, you basically have to trust internet reviews or put your money down first.
    I would love to buy a paper printed brochure at the dealership and would gladly pay $5 or $10 for it especially a limited edition sport model like this brochure, heck they can make money on it.
    Plus picking one up in person, gets you in the dealership next to the cars so a salesman can sale to you instead of the internet.
    I am surprised dealerships are not using limited edition brochures to get people in the dealerships.
    Type r type s gr r gti n fans would show up in drives pay ten dollars for it as a collectors item.
    But you got them. In your dealer speakership to see all of your cars, that stays with them.
    Now only car shows seem to promote cars with brochures.
    And a test drive is a must at $50 k year or more loan, or 3 year lease .

    One of the greatest cars ever made, it and the FK8 and now the Type S. Have no clue why anyone would pick a GR Corolla over any of those vehicles. The Type R is faster, way better interior, better shifter and steering feel, the best seats in the game, more aftermarket support, more practical, reliable as all get out. It's PROVEN. I just don't get the hype behind the cheaply made Corolla.

    • @MattMaranMotoring

      You gotta drive one to understand I guess. Rear-biased AWD, a peaky motor that reminds you of the Evo/STI days of rally machines for the road. You're right that if you're not interested in AWD the Corolla is worse on paper, but it ends up transcending the sum of its parts to be a really special experience.

    • @GERONIMO326
      @GERONIMO326 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @MattMaranMotoring I can respect your opinion. However, the rear biased awd system, doesnt help the car rotate as much as it does push the car into understeer on track when pushed hard.The car felt a tad bit underpowered to me and was not eager to rotate at the limit. No oversteer at all, just grip for days (everything was off). I was getting more oversteer in the FL5, believe it or not, (by doing the pedal dance). The CTR felt like it was in a completely different league to me on track than the GR.

    I can’t say I agree with your weather statement, any car will perform worse in slippery weather with summer tires so as long as you get proper winter tires on this thing there should be no issues driving in the snow.
    Not saying it will outperform a GR Corolla, Golf R or another comparable AWD vehicle in the snow but if this was a Mustang or a RWD front engine car with a lot of power then I’d agree no matter the setup it won’t perform too well in winter.

That is literally 1/3 the price of what these FL5 CTR’s are selling for, and I guarantee I would be able to punch my GTI as fast through a canyon l, than those buying these FL5 CTR’s!
