Most, if not all of these battle scenes, are stock footage from the Battle of the Philippine Sea fought in June 1944. It was such a disastrous defeat for the IJN that the American sailors called it the Miriana turkey shoot. Japan went full Kamikaze at this point since all of their best and experienced pilots had been lost.
But to show the audience what it must have felt like the be in the Battle of Coral Sea by using this footage works for me.
    Great movie!!

Not enough picket ships or AA guns at this point. Real footage of some carrier in this clip. We would build a new Lexington CV-16 and it bristled with AA. Flag ship of Task Group 58. 11 Battle Stars. I served on Lexington AVT-16 in 89-91, I'll always be super proud of that. She was my first older lady. Now she's a museum and I've been to see her.

The Coral Sea battle was an essential part of the whole story of the Battle of Midway. Too bad Hollywood had to dumb it down for the viewing audience and make the movie a shorter version...except when it was shown on TV. I remember when it was shown on TV and appreciated the extra footage very much.

The truth is that there was no kamikazes in the Battle of the Coral Sea and also the Battle of Midway but yet some Japanese military pilots actually made a decision to hit his own plane to an American aircraft carrier. But yet it was actually came out later on when Japan was actually losing the war against America. Kaitan was actually a man in the torpedo to guide his own weapon to American ship later in the war.

We hear Admiral Fletcher's voice (Robert Webber) but dont see him but then again this was added after the initial film was shot so they were probably just lucky to have him record lines. The most glaring thing was the absence of Admiral Halsey as he was rushing to get the Enterprise to Coral Sea to support the others but was too late. This was shown in the Midway remake in 2019. But there was probably no way they could get Bob Mitchum back to shoot more scenes.

It seems like I remember another scene in the extended TV version where Admiral Nagumo was at his home speaking to a young Japanese soldier (or pilot) about the war. Am I dreaming this or was there another different version of this movie?

    • @waistgunner3930
      @waistgunner3930 Před rokem +7

You are correct- the same younger pilot you were referring who was speaking to Admiral Nagumo was the same one who, shortly afterward, was flying a large reconnaissance seaplane & shot down....altogether there was about an hour of extra footage post-added when the film was first shown on TV (2 years later, in 1978); actors Charleton Heston and James Shigeta both reprised their roles as Garth and Nagumo, and actress Susan Sullivan was cast in the added scenes, also...

@kevinalbertina136 Wholeheartedly agree !!! I have been forever looking for that version, myself, and wish they would re-release it (call it the full, complete extended version,etc,).. I know they still have it and I'm thinking they're keeping it (in reserve, or "shelved" as films are sometimes called) until the right time. Seeing that we're coming up on the 50th anniversary (1976), there's just that possibility they intend to do that as such & hope they will.
For me, this movie is of very deep interest & meaning; my dad took me & my cousin to see it when it played at the theaters. I think, being a WW2 veteran, he wanted to go and see it also; having seen action in the South Pacific at Iwo Jima & Okinawa (he was also an eyewitness to the 1st U.S. flag raised over Suribachi). Also, as that it was the film was shown in "Sensurround", the effect was very much ahead of its time: l vivdly remember him being a bit "shook up" afterward & he said he had never seen anything depicted to that extent since the war itself. Myself, It has, again, very special meaning (and probably my all time favorite movie); I have a 2x3ft (24×36in.) movie poster of it on my wall... Let's hope (and pray) they do re-release it: uncut, uncensored, and with ALL added footage & extended scenes.
p.s. If they ever release it, another movie you will want to have is "Storm over the Pacific". A Japanese film released in 1960, most of the recreated carrier attack scenes (seen) in Midway were borrowed from it: The renowned Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune (who played Admiral Yamamoto) was in this one as well, and played Rear Admiral Yamaguchi...

This is a good movie; I saw it in the theaters. My biggest complaint against it is that, being made in 1976, they still had that habit from decades earlier of including a soap opera sub plot. Whenever I watch this movie, I just skip over those parts. The 2019 movie was also pretty good but it was diminished by a lot of overacting. It also made no mention of the Battle of the Coral Sea which was critical to the Battle of Midway. I believe this scene was cut from the 1976 movie but they at least talked about it in other scenes.

@Raymond Yee In the extended TV version of Midway The coral sea footage is added in right after the Japanese planning session on the battleship Yamato. Admiral Yamaguchi mentions that their coral sea operation will be starting. In the shorter version the next scene cuts to admiral Nimitz Landing at pearl Harbor on a PBY and than he discusses the after action report of the coral sea battle with Captain Garth and Rochefort in the jeep.

I will look into this further, but I do not believe the Lexington or the Yorktown had 40 mm canon or even 20 mm, this was early in the war, and there has not been time to re-arm these ships with the latest upgrades

    • @g.t.richardson6311

I was half right, both ships were sunk without any 40 mm Bofors having been installed. They both still had multiple quad 1.1 machine cannons.
However, both ships had many 20 mm guns installed in spring of 1942
Lexington had 32 installed, and still carried 28 .50caliber machine guns. (water cooled)
Yorktown added 24 20 mm guns, and still had a number of .50 caliber machine guns on board ( water cooled) although I could not find the number. Originally she had had 28 installed so I’m guessing somewhere around the same number were still on board.

Kamikazes came out later when the Japanese were actually losing the war against America itself. They actually had Rammers which was actually a Japanese military plane that rammed in American bombers. Russia itself and then the Germans in 1945 had their own Rammers. German Rammers which hit American bombers in a month or two before Nazi Germany regime itself surrendered. They were actually called Elbe squadron or something like that named after the Elbe river. German Rammers which hit American bombers then bailed out afterwards but some of them were actually shot at by American gunners. Japanese Rammers never came back.

Wrong several AA crews reported that planes hit and on fire deliberately aimed towards ships and kept coming at them. The crews kept shooting until they blew them out of the sky. Lt Tomanagua the leader of the torpedo attack on the Yorktown at Midway was one such plane. He didn't have the fuel to make it back to the Hiryu so instead tried to smash himself into a cruiser after dropping his torpedo on the Yorktown. He ate 10 5 in shells.

Nobody discusses it much but it’s probably why Hiryu planes were able to find Yorktown but not Hornet or Enterprise.
It’s also a good to conclude they Yorktown despite being handicapped was allowed to venture alone with her small screening force while Hornet and Enterprise paired up.
Yorktown’s condition would cause more potential harm to Enterprise or Hornet had one do them tried to support Yorktown.
