Just a extra tip for some of you guys trying it out, when pulling down my rappel rope, I took a chalk line box and put petzel throwing line in it and use it, much easier to wind back up
I've found that putting the platform right in the center behind u makes the best sense. It can move more swinging forward to back on your side & create noise on a slim trail in the woods. Put things on your sides which r lower profile. Ease of use & stealth is the name of the game. The advantages outweigh the detriments, always.
I daisy chain my tether/lineman when walking in. Have them hooked to my loops and around my back, this eliminates my need for two dump pouches. Also a Doyle's gear hoist is one gadget that is fiddle free and makes life so much easier
Nice video. I am glad to see I am not the only one that marks their pullup rope to know how high they are, been doing that for over 15 years. I know how high I am, most are not as high as they claim. The 3 finger hooker I picked up last year has served me very well. I highly recommend one or two. I use four hawk 30" sticks with aiders, two are double aiders. I only attach one to my saddle on the way up. The hooker lifts the rest. Being that the hooker is so light I had to add weight to it for maneuverability. I simply used a small steel quick link to attach it to my rope.
It's crazy how many people think 15ft is 20ft. I've noticed this from climbing too. People think a 60ft cliff is 100ft.
Heck just use your weapon haul up rope, mine is 25 foot .

I'm in MN & we were having snow this afternoon. I hooked a 14mm climbing rope onto a piece of paracord I put over a live branch tight against the 🌳 a few weeks ago. I was able to pull the paracord over & to the ground so I was able to hook up to my climbing line. I did this while a gray squirrel was digging in the snow 40 feet away. When I got back down to the ground I hooked the paracord to the climbing line. Brought my line home & left the paracord tied to a small 🌳 nearby 7' off the ground. I expect activity in the next week & will return. Minutes to get up & get down stealth fully. Just a little prep work needed during the off-season when u pick spots & trim lanes.
Awesome single stick lesson at end. Makes me rethink my strategy for this season

It just seems like to much going on at 4-5 in the morning I think I would rather just bring my 4 sticks.
Exactly why I don't 1 stick. I use the wild edge steppladders. I only ever use 3. They're super compact. I use a home made aider with them and get about 18ft or so. Just a piece of climbing rope with a loop on one end and a carabiner attached to a prusic knot on the other for height adjustment. When I get to height, I wrap it around the tree and hang my bag off of it.
One sticking method seems great for straight trees with limited branches. But man I cant imagine doing that on a gnarly tree with branches all over. Garrett's method with the stacked sticks all on his one hip is by far the most efficient. I expect nothing less from the DIY Sportsman mastermind.
Single sticking works great for any tree you can reach around. The number of branches doesn’t matter.

Great video guys! I really appreciate this video. You have showed me a couple solutions to somethings I have been thinking about for a while. BONUS, I love some of the hack the guys where showing. Maybe next year I will start playing around with the single stick method. I feel like I can be comfortable with that with some practice. I like it because I will only have to worry about only one stick. Thanks again guys!
Just one thing to note about using open cell foam.. yes it may be lighter initially but it will absorb water and could create mold issues as well as being heavier after all is said and done. Haven't done any experiment myself I just know open cell foam will absorb water and closed cell isn't supposed to just something to think about.
Not only that but doesn't that foam carry an odor for a good while?

Just ordered the Tetrd Phantom saddle kit today and want to try it out.
I was wondering how he was going to get his Tether rope down after he repelled down. That was slick
I tie P cord to the carabiner that chokes the tether when I'm ready to rappel down. When I hit the ground and I'm all packed up, I pull the P cord, which loosens the carabiner and kind of feed the rope (pushing rope sounds counter intuitive haha). than just pull the rope right through. This allows you to get the tether down regardless if you've gone around limbs or whatnot. the end of the tether doesn't have any knots so this allows it to pass through with ease.
Holy shit. The climbing system is its own hobby.

Wow that's some intense ninja climbing. He seems to have it down to a science. I feel like it would take a lot of practice to get that proficient.
If you’re already comfortable with the steps needed for hunting from a saddle, it’s really not a difficult change. It’s like anything, you want to practice at home, slow down in the woods, and take your time.
I'm not ever going to be saddle hunter but he really showed a great illustration on that set up good for you guy's hope you sell lot's it'll make it safer for mobile hunting hopefully.

Great group of people who I am always looking forward to hearing from, but I got to tease you. How did you choose a location for Tethrd Saddle Hunting demos with no trees? In most states you would be hard pressed to find a location with no trees. You must bee in Kansas or the Midwest. ;.)
I used the no stick method all last season-just an aider wrapped around the tree with a cinch knot. It's a lot of work and early season I'd be sweating like a stuck pig. I'm thinking its time for the 1 stick method. I really like how the aider as already attached to the stick.
Does it get easier with time? Im assuming a lineman wouldn’t use sticks at all lol
@@maxeyspal not really, lol. I went to full sticks this season, but going to buy the Eastern Woods Outdoors Ultimate One Step with a sown in aider. Tired of carrying the sticks and platform around and it should be easier to climb than what I was doing before.
@@robertlester4569 to be honest all i have is a climber that I’m terrified off lol. I usually just hunt out of a ground blind. However, I just bought a harness and lifeline so im going to give the trees another shot. Ill have to check out the setup you just referenced tho, this climber isint too heavy but it’s extremely bulky.

The Madrock Safeguard, when used like this, is out of spec. There are other friction hitches that are safer. You can use an ATC or figure 8 to rappel down.
Probably half of climbing tools are out of spec when used in saddle hunting.

What is out of spec about using the safeguard for repelling? It is a belay/repelling device. I don’t know what size rope he’s using but that’s the only thing that could be out of spec.

What do we know about that bow hook he used (the hook and swivel itself)? I love the idea of fishing it up from the stand vs. dragging the line up... y'all know where to pick one of those up?

That is a prototype grapple hook. I used a rubber coated metal hook (from a 1” ratchet strap) before the grapple hook. I had it wrapped with a highly reflective arrow wrap so it was highly visible under a red light. It worked great!
R-Strap makes a simple adhesive loop phone tether I’ve had good luck with sticking my phone to my pack or binoc harness

@@mikekeeferwithaqualandreli4711 It adds a whole new level of fun and feels SO much safer. Standing up in a hang on even with a harness will always feel sketchy after saddles. My dad got the Tethrd and I picked up the Aerohunter, both great products that become easy to trust. Glad to hear of any father son keeping the hunting tradition alive, so thankful to have it passed on to me from a father that started on his own. Your passions become your legacy in weird ways.
@@BooRayWisco yes it was passed to me from my grandfather. My dad was always to busy with work to really do much outdoor activities. But it taught me I wouldn't make the same mistake with my son. So we hunt a lot together. And we do a lot of metal detector. We are beat friends for sure.

I use the saddle and one stick to get above average reach level to install trail cams on public land. I found this a good way to get used to the gear, from carrying to set up to getting up in a tree but not too high at first.
Obviously, what's not used is the tether and platform, but those can be tested as well.
One sticking is a true game changer. Hunt as high or low as you want and pretty much any tree with only 5-7lbs of gear. It's amazing.

What kind of hook do you use to “fish up the bow” when you have climbed? Also is there a loop sticking off the bow to easily hook to?
What I do is I tie a regular not to my cam and to my saddle so it’s quite cause when I use carabiners it clanked together

Carl Kossuth and his one-stick innovations are always interesting. I would like to know what percentage of his solo tree ascents for hunting use the one-stick method vs multi stick methods? I understand that the multi stick is the method to use when two people (a hunter and a camera person) are ascending the same tree, so lets exclude those from the question.
I have used my single stick method exclusively for the last two seasons, nothing else.
Where can we buy those little clips to hang our sticks from our saddle when climbing???

And I thought I had my set up all figured out for this season! Gonna be changing at least 5 things over the next couple of months. Only question I have, is while doing the single stick climbing method, is there any point where you would use a lineman's belt? Or did you just not use one for simplicity of demonstration of the general singlestick method. Not trying to be a pain, genuinely curious.
When you come up to a branch/limb that you want to climb past. Use your lineman to connect you to the tree so you can disconnect your climbing rope/tether and reconnect it above the limb and continue climbing.

I actually use the lineman’s belt the whole way up as I’m climbing the aider/stick. It just helps with balance and safety. I still have the tether/rappel rope attached to the tree and I move it up with each step up to avoid any major slack if I was to have a fall. It does slow me down by a few seconds but for me it’s worth it. And as others have mentioned, if you have to pass some branches you’ll need a lineman’s rope or another tether anyway.

I couldn’t be less interested in that one stick climbing method.
I never understood why people prefer that method. It isn’t any faster or efficient. And even if it was it wouldn’t be by much. People are just over thinking these things, like the knaiders and swaders. Just get some sticks and climb the tree, it’s pretty simple.
@@CB-sd6kl its super easy and allows you more options for height in the tree. It works in elevation to adjust for hills, and it helps for extremely crooked trees or ones that require a lot of moves. Its super light and easy to do and takes a few minutes to get up and set. I enjoy it and it's the best way I've gone up a tree.

The airy foam they are talking about is called open cell foam you do not want to use closed cell it’s way heavier because it’s closed cell obviously they use these foams for all sorts of applications
1 stick seems like a scent control nightmare!
I would like to see a tree saddle demonstration on a gnarled up old oak tree with tons of branches. I only ever see demonstrations on power poles or perfectly straight trees. I will use my climber on the straight trees.
This one stick method works great for that, you just need a second tether to stay connected to the tree and get over the branches
It helped having a one stick to get a a knarly old walnut that I was gonna hunt this year before I moved out of state. One stick was the only way to get up and it was a really fun climb. Really is fun to do.
Seems like a lot more work than just using 3 long sticks...

No they're not the same. But they would work! I like the ones they had. Clipped right to the stick and then you could hang them off the harness
Those “Pex plumbing” clips are actually Multi Talons from mobilehuntinggear. Sorry guys but you’re not going to find that in the plumbing section.
During the one stick method, imagine dropping the stick by accident.
