Should I Stop Racing my Demon 170? SELL IT INSTEAD?

  • I give you my thoughts on racing my Demon 170 again after my original engine had to be replaced. Many have told me that they think I should sell the car and cut ties with Dodge and Stellantis altogether. Should I continue to drag race the car after what happened to the engine? Is there a design flaw? What do you think I should do with the car?

The Challenger Drag Pak car from mopar is the factory drag car. Race prepped and not street legal. These were a marketing and cash grab car. Even in the warranty it states your warranty “ may” be voided if raced.

Hey, I think you’re a great guy. I really enjoy your channel. Please take no offense to my suggestions. I am a master mechanic. I have built engines. After 500 miles change the oil and filter. Do not even think about racing it until you’ve got at least 1500 miles on it.. at that point change the oil and filter again. If you spend a day at the dragstrip, change the oil and filter each and every time before you go back to race it. Please understand that even though it has been modified to drag race, this is a very extreme hard service use of the vehicle. It wasn’t designed from the ground up to drag race. It has been modified to do that. If you continually race it on a regular basis, the engine and transmission are going to wear at a much higher rate than they normally would, if you were driving it on the street. After about 25,000 miles or sooner of hard use you’re going to have to plan to go through that motor again and possibly the tranny. Plan on it ahead and don’t be surprised. I’m glad for you that you’re having fun with it. That’s what it’s all about.😊

    • @realforest
      @realforest Před 23 dny

25,000 miles is a good estimate, say if it's driven normally a hemi can last 200-300k of easy miles before the lifter ticking gets unbearable. For example if 10,000 of those 25,000 miles are WOT (driving to the drag strip, and 1/4 mile back down the strip driving slowly), that will wear out the transmission clutches and engine very fast. On the 200-300k engine lets say the person does a wot pull every 10 miles up until highway speeds (~75mph). That should be about half the time down the drag strip with less wear, heat, and easier launch on the drivetrain components. Plus everything has time to cool down with fast flow coolant instead of almost idling after a 1/4 mile pull.

@crebbsjd My way of thinking is perfectly clear. As an engineer who builds, races, owns, crashes, and repeats, I fully understand what I'm saying and double down on it.
No one is asking him to "throw it away." I'm simply stating that sometimes you have to know when it's best to walk away.
At this point, it may be best to walk away if he can make a profit or break even.
It WILL only go down from here no matter what for that car. It works great it has a replacement engine.. it lasts forever, it will never hold its value with a replacement engine. Not to mention the constant worrying if it will break again, and next time on his dime

From not getting great times to a complete engine failure. (Related or not) It's a known "problem car"
Bottom line, it won't get more valuable. It's only going to deprecate, and at a more rapid rate than usual.
You may believe it's normal, but most 170 buyers won't. Lots of them want a low mile, non abused car they can put in their car collection and just look at it.

I would see if it's possible to simply install a Moroso Oil Accumulator. Might do the trick for preventing oil starvation at around $300. However I could imagine that being used as a poor excuse to void the warranty.

Milodon makes a pan that is supposed to contain the oil and not let it sling away from the pickup. But I would get an okay from Dodge before I installed it, for warranty issues. A dry sump is the only 100% cure. Poor design for the launch this car has.

Too many people way overpaid. Up to a quarter million above MSRP. Nearly all are in a hermetically sealed climate controlled chamber with only delivery miles. I imagine that sitting idle for 5-20 years won't do the car any good. Nearly all will be sold with near 0 miles. It would be much harder to turn a profit if your Demon has thousands of miles on it.
By the way, love these cars. If I had a choice, I would prefer an older 6 speed manual Hellcat or Demon.
Far more likely to spike in value, since manual cars are nearly nonexistent in today's market.

I myself am still in the break-in period for my demon 170 and yeah I’m watching your channel every time you put out a video and I’m doing researchmyself so I can do everything right with my car, but it was actually probably a blessing in disguise and I believe that that demon 170 will keep your channel very hot for many years to come so definitely do not sell it

I mean, you ordered it, had it delivered, raced it, and showed us what happens when they break and you got it fixed. You also showed us the process of the warranty and dealing with the dealership and Stellantis. That is the circle of life with a car, and you showed us the entire thing in a matter of a few months. On break in I'd be avoiding high way miles and consistent RPM's, On my old professionally built 440 the builder told me that. Also to change the oil at 500 miles. Also warned me it would be hard to seat the moly rings. After the 500 miles I took a very serious and long desolate desert rump in the 3 digit speed range. That finally sealed the rings.
I ran that car as a daily driver and weekly drag racer for several years. Never hurt the engine till the end. Broke lots of 8 3/4 ring and pinions from the hard launches and shifts. When I did finally hurt the engine I didn't blow it. I seized the number two cylinder wrist pin. I'd ran it hard and didn't give it a long enough cool down run out.
I'd keep the Demon and keep on racing! Having the warranty is a great thing! Maybe trade it in down the road when the Charger Banshee shows up at the dealer lot! I am betting the Banshee will consistently out run the Demon 170 when it arrives! You know they are going to want the Banshee to grab some attention and to put those still crying about the death of the Hemi to eating some crow followed by a slice of humble pie!

I kinda wonder if the oil they call for from the factory isn't quite thick enough for actually racing these cars. I believe boosted Coyotes usually call for 5w 50 full synthetic. When oil gets hot, it thins out and lubricates less. Which leads to bearing damage.
